"Off season tackle purchases" 2024

Just curious if majority use the off season to stock up, add new and replenish for up coming season or do you purchase all season through.
I'd be lying if I said I never bought anything in season but anything needed I buy in the off season. I keep a running list on the refrigerator door that I add to and fulfill through the winter. I live where there is a long winter with no bass action going on.
I have Wally Worlds and DICK'S near me but they are no prize. Susquehanna is a road trip but well worth trip for me. TW is my mail order outlet. For majority. BPS and Cabela's Has gotten high with their prices and BPS is more interested in carrying their house brand.
I'm down to a reel purchase, a few Rapala jerkbaits and some tubes. There were a few Bandits that were a struggle to find for a couple of years but recently got them. Discontinued colors as spares.
Sorry for for being so long winded. Winter is killing me.

Know the feeling buddy.... I live in Pittsburgh and it's been a horrible winter with no signs of ending.
I definitely take the winter to "reload" my tackle. I hate buying anything not on sale and take advantage of the discounts on black Friday for a large shipment that's all between 25%-30% off.
Also do all the rod and reel maintenance while I'm waiting for the cold gray death outside to leave.
Thank God above that this will be my last winter in Pittsburgh..... moving to Jacksonville FL in July and will never look back.

Honestly, I buy more tackle in the summer than in winter. Having an over-abundance of tackle means nothing is absolutely needed. Keep in mind that I've been collecting tackle since I was 18. Even with last year's sell off of 12 tackle trays full of lure, I still have more than I need or will every use. But that will never stop me from getting the latest, greatest lures. Its a sickness I tell ya.

I pick one technique in the winter that I want to apply more frequently for the next season and try to glean as much info as I can on it. For me it will be punching and flipping a jig so I invested in a high-end rod and reel and some jigs, terminal tackle this winter, and watched lots of videos and read a lot about it.
But yeah, I'm really anxious to get out and fish.

I have the sickness and desease for sure. Crowding 60 in a couple of years. That won't slow me fishing wise because I need to make it to retirement to fish even more.
It's been tough finding some discontinued Bandit and Bomber colors the last few years. Time proven colors, why they were discontinued??? heck if I know. I just like having a few extra. Not that I really need them. I think Bomber and Bandit are going down the toilet. So be it I guess. Their product quality has taken a serious header over the years. All Guatty made stuff now. Rapala has been my go to hard baits. I've been able to pick up some bait and color runs for Canada on a few series of baits. Been too long of a winter. Should head south with Tweek.

Heh, maybe you can get into tackle making in your retirement...I think I will if I ever get time to do it.

I'm sort of into what you are saying. I still maintain a certain passion for stream trout fishing. Have done it since a real young age. Have always found it to be a real stress reliever. Over the last few years I've been dabbling at some fly fishing. Not going at it all full blown or anything just trying to get a few basics down, catch a few stocked and wild trout. But, this is something I really want to work at once I retire if I live long enough. Get into the aquatic life and make some flies. I'm not too bad at it now and admittedly don't know squat. It will come in time. I can see myself up at 2 or 3 in the morning tying a few flies and on the water at 5:00am trying them out. I sort of have my own life's version of "A River Runs Through It". Seem like I'm at peace with myself and the rest of the world when I'm around water.

I actually just got an box in the mail from Tackle Warehouse about an hour ago. Had a gift card from Christmas to spend and of course spent some extra in order to get the free shipping. I usually put an order in this time of year every year to replenish tackle and to try out some new stuff I learned over the winter.

bulk plastics, hooks, new Garmin for the console, trailer tires, one battery (maybe two)...lets see, maybe some bulk line, Tatula CT, another rod, Mustang vest?

I restock on tackle.. terminal, plastics, jigs, ect. And use the off season to go over my rods/reels and decide what I want to continue using and what I want to upgrade/replace

I restock line, Trokars, and whatever baits im low on. Usually pick that stuff up during the Tackle Warehouse black Friday or 25 days of Christmas sale. I usually have a pretty uneventful winter as far as fishing gear purchases, but 2 weeks ago I splurged on a Helix 10 SI. so I'm done spending for awhile.

I replace terminal tackle and lures as the need arises. Rod, reels, boat accessories, I purchase prior to the season opener.

I buy when things I need are low but honestly I could go about 5 years without buying anything but a license if I wanted.

I stock up on line, terminal tackle, things I'm low on (this year it was cranks, d**n pike) and anything new that I want to try. Problem is I don't seem to limit the "restocking" to the off season...

I don't have an off season, so I can't buy things in the off season. I try to use some of the bad winter days to stock up on the homemade baits though.

You're a lucky guy. Wish I didn't have the down time. But I'm not crying I hunt and shoot clays. I think about smallies at least once a day.

I have a solo trip to Lake Ontario coming up. I really need nothing to go except a full tank of gas in the truck and but it in "D".
But I'm also replacing two trailer tires really only for good measure. My vest is fine but fell I better get an inflatable and I need to put a permenant reel on an Avid X I bought last year.
Im a river rat for the most part. Might be a real fish out of water so to speak once I get up there. Not sure how I'll do up there. I'm just gonna apply what I know and go for it. Fell in love with that place salmon fishing and now is time to give bass a go. Worse case will be getting skunked and come home with a tail between my legs.

One of my goals is to catch fish every month. So far so good. I seem to buy a lot of stuff when the weather is bad. I drive by DSG and Academy on my way to work. BPS is closeby. Problem

Ah winter, the magical realm of The Bait Monkey. He thrives in cold weather. I too spend my winters buying a "bunch" of tackle, gear, etc. Not even limited to fishing. I'll fill gaps in my camping gear, outdoor clothes and anything else that peaks the interest.
In the realm of fishing, i tend to buy more new things in winter. I'll pick up brands I've been wanting to try, small "tester" orders per say. Obviously I'll stock the staples in plastics and lures too.
It's also the season of adding, upgrading and all around drooling over new rods and reels for me. Yeah, I have a problem. I like shiny stuff.
In season, I find that I'm much more likely to refill whatever's been working, Whatever I'm burning through. That's how I fine tune my gear: buy stuff, try it, re-buy what worked, don't buy what didn't. Honestly, as much as I like getting orders and new things, I've fine tuned my tackle down to the minimum. All of which are things that worked for me over the years. I'm frugal and it's much easier to restock when all my gear is basically an assortment of confidence lures.
My wallet frequently thanks me.

I dont have a real off season, but i tend to spend the most at black friday (sales) and right now (getting ready for spring fishing). I keep a running list on my phone, add stuff as i need to on it, and look back at it when i get ready to order. Found this way im less likely to forget to order things i need between realizing im low, and when i get ready to order. If i rely on just memory i always go back fishing and go " you dummy, you forgot to get those thingamahickys when you ordered doomaflatchys last week".

i use the off season to stock up, replenish anything missing and buy more stuff i don't necessarily need but really want anyway. the good thing is that at least thinking this way you can take advantage of some sales if you start early enough

I definitely use the offseason to revise my current setups, take advantage of sales, and daydream about the first time my line hits the water for the year. I used to have an SUV but got a new super crew pickup a few months ago so I'm in the process of upgrading all my 2 piece rods to some better 1 piece sticks. I went shopping at Cabela's last weekend and found a $170 Lews baitcasting combo for $100 so I grabbed it. Ordered some line yesterday and going to Dicks tomorrow. Can't wait to hit the water.......

Two locally made buzzbaits and two Whopper Ploppers are the only tackle I have purchased so far this year.
They are replacements for the ones I lost last year.

I buy very little tackle through the summer, unless I run out of something while on vacation. The last couple years, my backstock was great enough I bought nothing, even in spring.
Having said that, I'm gonna pull the trigger on a '18 Stella 2500SHG when they become available in March. That should do me for the year!
I take that back, I'm also getting a half dozen Tekota 300LCs for my newly found love of walleye fishing.

The offseason is spent buying things I think I need. Then during the season I realize what I actually need...
I actually haven't bought that much tackle wise so far. I did get a couple new rods and a reel but that was just to upgrade some other setups, no net gain of equipment really. I have been buying some clothing and other kayak related stuff in anticipation of the summer though.

Does my Mystery Tackle Box subscription count? I built a new rod rack for the truck bed and picked up a SeaKnight EVO reel, working on doing some organizing, probably going to buy some shelves this weekend and go from there.

Over this past winter, I have bought a Abu Veritas 7' MH and Abu REVO3 SX. Also, I purchased a Duckett Ghost 7' MH with a Carrot Stix CCA2002-C2 for $50!! Aside from rod and reel, I stocked up on soft plastics (mostly Havoc and Zoom).
However, my local Walmart has clearanced a large amount of Rapala lures and topwater lures, so I plan on returning to get more soon.

I need to pick up a reel for an Avid X I bought late last summer. Have been playing musical reel on it up till the fall. So far I looked at the Abu Revo SX, Daiwa Tutula, a Lews MachII, there are a few Shimanos I like. Fish with many Shimanos already looking for some different and reliable. Do live the Revo. Good luck.

I have yet to fish with my Revo yet, but I really like casting it. I opted for the 6.4:1 instead of the 7.4:1, but I enjoy the reel. Hopefully I can start fishing in like 5 weeks and report back.
