New baits & Techniques you want to try in 2011 2024

fishing user avatarPrimus reply :

I'll start with mine...

Northstar Jigs- just got my first order and waiting for the ice to melt. Impressed with the quality.

3:16 Wake Jr & 3:16 Herring- topwater swimbaits

Matt lures Tournament series soft swimbaits- He has one to match just about any baitfish a bass will eat.

Matt lures Slow Sink Hard Perch, Fast, Slow & floating Gills- I've already have fished the slow Gills, awesome bait and by next spring I'll have a small school of Matt's Gills

8" 22nd Century Triple Trout- I have to see what the fuss is about, heard good things about this bait

High Power Herring- just got my first one, can't wait to fish it heard these were bad*ss

Various 6"-8" soft swimbaits- slow rolling for big fish

Mega Bait Mega Bug- looks like a cool soft plastic

Power Tackle Lateral Perch- innovative idea

Overall 2011 will be the year of the swimbait for me, I'm going to spend a lot of time trying to learn these baits.

fishing user avatarRed reply :

For me this coming year, one of the main things will be shallow cranks, really shallow cranks(square bills), less than five feet mostly.  Additionally I will work on regaining my confidence in jigs and texas rigged worms.  Going to try some bigger 10" worms this year too.

fishing user avatarNibbles reply :

Square bill cranking and paddle tail soft plastic swimbaits.

fishing user avatarHamby reply :

I need to work on cranking and jerkbait fishing. I also have some big jigs i want to try. 3/4oz with an 8/0 gammy hook. I'd like to catch some big bass on it, but a musky would be real nice too. I'll probably catch a bunch of pike though.

fishing user avatarRevo_Carrot Stix reply :

I'm going to give soft swimbaits one more year or until I run out. I've caught a few on them, but nothing consistent.

And I need to focus on slowing down, regardless of the technique. Hopefully, that will come with age too!  :D

fishing user avatarHamby reply :

Actually, i have a problem with going to slow! Ha ha. I spend WAY too much time on every little spot that looks good. My buddy fishes WAY too fast and will actually leave a good bite hoping he'll find a better one. I guess we should fish together more often.

That's why i said i need to fish more cranks and jerkbaits. I also need to learn to pick up the spinnerbait and keep it in my hand for a while. It's ridiculous how quick i'll throw the spinnerbait down and pick up my jig rod and start working the crap out of small spots only to catch nothing.

fishing user avatarBassn Blvd reply :

I'm ready to try a different color Senko.  :D;)  I've already gone through a hundred bags of black/blue flake. ;D

There's this one color i really like. My buddy makes them. It's called jumbalaya...kinda like an ox blood, and it's coffee scented. When i skip docks, it out fishes every other color i have. I don't know if it's the color, the scent, or a combination of both.

fishing user avatarOHIO reply :

I just got a ton of shallow cranks, so probably some cranking.

I also want to start fishing more plastics again, primarily tubes and finesse techniques.

fishing user avatarMNGeorge reply :

Spinnerbaits for me...many of my fishing buddies do well with them, I can't catch a cold on one. I plan to make a concerted effort to add them to my list of productive baits.

Also plan to mess around a lot with odd colors of soft plastics, especially when the water is murky or downright dirty. You might want to buy some JJ's Magic stock...it will definitely rise in value this spring. ;D

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

These are my suggestions:

Rage Tail Baby Craw as a jig trailer and naked

MegaStrike MegaBug

Sworming Hornet/ LFT Live Magic Shad

Fat Ika

For me, 2011 is going to be the year of the spinnerbait.

fishing user avatarjdw174 reply :

I've already got more than I can use, but there's always something to try.  I won a $50 gift card to the local sporting goods store and I picked up four of the new SK KVD Square Bills, 2 of each size, and a handful of SK Tour Model Football Jigs.  That pretty much covers any new lure expenditures for the coming year.

fishing user avatargrimlin reply :

Nothing coming to mind as trying new. I just wanna catch more fish this year. I'm sure a few new baits might make it on the water. For the most part I'm sticking with trick sticks, tubes, grubs and jig/craw. If the conditions recall for spinnerbaits then that's what I'll be casting.I do want to greatly improve my top water technique.

I'm just concentrating on fishing the pattern.Hoping I can put together a better game plan.

fishing user avatarScorcher214 reply :

-Crank baits

-Flick Shake

-MAYBE topwater

I don't think i will be purchasing much lures this year (unless i can find a job lol), most of my money will probably be spent on new rods and reels.

fishing user avatarShane J reply :

I'm probably going to try using more cranks (shallow square bills and lipless), and grubs on little jig heads.

fishing user avatarBassThumb reply :

I'm going to force myself to do more drop-shotting, because it's one of my least favorite presentations and I have absolutely no confidence in it producing big fish for me.

fishing user avatarslonezp reply :

Just ordered a Lateral Perch and some wake baits from TW.

fishing user avatarAluma-Bass reply :

i would like to try the float n fly some this year

fishing user avatarGatorbassman reply :

I'm going to totally switch gears this year. I'm going slow way down and focus on stitching with big worms and also fishing big soft swimbaits.

fishing user avatarBass Junkie reply :

King Daddy, as well as other frogs.

Gambler Big EZ- I finally bought a pack of these late last season, and all I can say is WOW! For the price I've never seen anything like it.... Great natrual action, great colors, durable, heavey, catches fish..... I'm excited about these!

Throwing more full sized spooks.

And frogs....

Frogs.....

Frogs.....

The Spro Bronzeye Jr. was my top producer throw the first half of the season... I guess not alot of people throw these around here.... The Spro's are the best frog's I've used, totally weedless, great hook-up ratio, great action, great colors.... I can't find anything not to like about these.

fishing user avatarskeetercraig reply :

chatter bait

swim jigs

swim baits

these are the three i need to work on will see how long that last lol

fishing user avatarSeanW reply :

Really nothing new. Just working on perfecting.

fishing user avatarDave P reply :

Shakey Heads, Swim and regular jigs.

fishing user avatarmarinetech reply :

I have always been fishing jigs and soft plastics , literally sun up to sun down. Played around with spinnerbaits and cranks last fall and really did well and learned alot. Just bought 2 new rods and reels that will be just for these two lures. I showed my buddy how to fish senkos last year and I have created a monster. I just do not enjoy fishing them even though they are amazing. He finally started catching more fish than me he was quite proud of himself and fun to see him do so well. Also this long cold winter I am going to practice pitchin and flippin in one of our heated boat storage buildings. I am building a platform the same height of my boat deck.

fishing user avatarChaz Hickcox reply :

I would like to get into punching matted grass.  Back Bay in Virginia Beach is getting loladed with grass again.  This year I was using bronze eyes and rage tail shads and toads to get to the bass, but that technique really only worked well when the water was low.  I know the fish are in the same areas, but they don't want the topwater all the time.

fishing user avatarFishinDaddy reply :

Offshore, Offshore, and Offshore.

Oh, did I mention, Offshore.

fishing user avatarplymouthrockbass reply :

I wanna try using more cranks in deeper water. Also id like to get comfortable with fishing jigs. Im gonna get a few new jigs come springtime and spend some hours practicing.

Go with Randall on Varner or one of the other ATL lakes if you want to learn swimbaits or just how to catch big fish.

He is very knowledgeable and helpful. Makes a dam fine bait as well.

fishing user avatarNateFollmer reply :

Hard swimbaits... I don't use them much (if ever) and would really like to learn them.

Spoons also. I mean, I have used them, but I basically just cast them out reel a bit, let it drop, reel a bit, let it drop. I need to learn more techniques!

fishing user avatarGangley reply :

Crank baits and spinner baits.

Trying hard to learn the jerkbait this winter, but not having much success.

Long pauses are key in cold water... 20+ seconds even - keep at it, you'll find the fishes 'groove'.

fishing user avatarGLoomis711 reply :

Flipping in General, but actually flipping, Not Pitching.

Whether it be flipping 1/2 oz jigs to Treetops & Laydowns, or Flipping 1 1/2 oz weighted Sweet Beavers into Mats.

Btw, I've NEVER caught a fish on a dropshot.

Or caught a smallmouth  >:D

I'm gonna change that this year !

fishing user avatarPrimus reply :

... and the meek shall inherit the earth( enter big power chords), 2112 is definetely my favorite Rush album.

I've never tried flipping with most of the lakes I fish having clear water I've gotten by with pitching. That said I know a lake or 2 by me where flipping would be a good option. I just might have to put that on my to do list as a fisherman. Follow-up if you catch any big ones with the flipping technique and good luck.

fishing user avatarcatchnm reply :

I'm going to be Wacky Rigging, Shaky Head(ing), and fishing tubes more this year. Got a few swimbaits to wear out also.

fishing user avatardh88hms reply :

For me it will be:

Swim Jigs

Creature Baits

fishing user avatarBlue Streak reply :

I found a couple of new baits from MindaLures that I want to try. The Spear Craw and the Spear worms. Both have interesting action and I have heard good things about them. And I am a sucker for new soft baits.

fishing user avatarlynyrdsky1 reply :

Drop Shot

Cranking (succesfully)

Tubes

Wacky Rig (succesfully)

baits probably be anything from Megastrike and reaction innovation

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

Praying..............I've got everything else down pat.

fishing user avatarbassfisherjk reply :

I am going to try fishing Bass Pro Shops "egg" shallow crankbait. Also going to give the hollow body frog a shot, ordered Bass Pro Shops Kermy. We will see what happens.

fishing user avatarScorcher214 reply :

Ehh i think im gonna change mine. I wanna try flukes,  caught like 2 this past season and I think they could be a very versatile bait.

fishing user avatarIma Bass Ninja reply :

jigs......and i'm gonna try the Slider too,... :D

fishing user avatarfarmpond1 reply :

Last year (2010) was so good for me, I can only hope to repeat my success.  Disclaimer:  I've seen lots of pictures of guys with much bigger bass than what I caught but compared to some pretty dismal years, 2010 was awesome for me (in both numbers and size).  But to address the question directly, I am hoping to learn drop- shotting better and to learn deep water bassin' away from the shore and relying on my fish finder.  And, finally, to actually catch a bass on a wacky rig.

fishing user avatarbilgerat reply :

Back to basics. Believe it or not, I have not thrown an old school worm (7" ribbontail) in about 3 years.

I have some new 1/16 oz mini jigs that I just know are gonna crush for me. Ever have that feeling about a bait ? It's been a long time, but these are it for me.

fishing user avatartnbassfisher reply :

Last year I made it "the year of the crankbait" for myself. However, I wasn't quite able to stay with this trend, as my lack of confidence would shortly send me towards another bait.

This year I'm hoping to really improve all aspects of my fishing, mostly finding structure and where fish are in general.

There aren't any particular new lures that I've seen that are really jumping out at me, however, I'm sure the bait monkey will change that as the year goes on.

fishing user avatarHawghead reply :

Last year was the year of the Carolina Rig and Jig for me.

My favorite was sort of an altered Carolina Rig. I was simply crimp a split shot above the t-rigged plastic and let the bullet weight use that as the stopper. I did away with the beads and swivel. Made retying a lot faster.

This summer I would love to get more into spinnerbaits, dropshotting, and getting away from the shore. Paddletail swim baits will likely get their shot as well.

EDIT: Also last year I broke the ice and into baitcasters.  I got a Shimano Citica and put in on a BPS extreme Med 7' 6" rod.  It was my jig and craw trailer rod.  Did well at Lake of the Ozarks with it.

I need to get better with it so I can expand the list of of lures I can cast on it.

fishing user avatarfrogflogger reply :

Since I moved back to brown bass country I want to try center pinning jigs for the giant smallies that inhabit the New River

fishing user avatarI.rar reply :

this past year wasnt about new techniques for me. i focused more on packing light and sharpening my skills on what i like to fish with and i feel that was a success. this year , i may be dipping back into ultra light and/or light tackle more. i get more enjoyment fishing that than i do casting heavier baits with heavy gear and the fights the fish give feel more of a challenge. i will still use my heavier gear , but i have a feeling the light stuff will be on the water more.

fishing user avatarGrundleLove reply :

Jigging. At all. I literally never use jigs. Where i am there are so many weeds and it just sucks. but i guess i'll try to this year since EVERYONE on this forum loves it. Is it sad i have literally never jig fished?

fishing user avatarVboards1 reply :

Just got my new swimjigs from NSCB. Can't wait to get into these with all of the new trailers I just got. It's gunna be something special hopefully.  8-)
