Ned Rig 2025

fishing user avatarGreen Trout reply :

I am super impressed with this rig right here. I went to a pond where in the past I've caught very few bass. I threw my ned rig out there a and almost back to back to back to back casts I caught a fish. I even caught a 3lb bass on it. Great little rig and fun fishing it on the ultralight.

For the river I usually fish, I need something weedless. Anyone have any ideas on how to make this rig weedless? Thanks!

What is the ned rig? Is it a variant of a Carolina or texas rig?

fishing user avataraceman387 reply :

I use these jig heads in the 1/16 size.I put a drop of super glue gel on the barb to hold the stub in place.http://www.basspro.com/Luck-E-Strike-Cable-Jigheads/product/10224212/?cmCat=CROSS

This video will help. Its a fun and simple way to fish without dragging a bunch of tackle with you.

All you can do is use a weedless jig head..I throw it more around gravel but they will hang up....nature of the beast.

There is a ton of ned rig info on ozark anglers.

Ozarkanglers.com will give you a ton of info on the Ned rig. The Ned rig will out fish the Senko I ( wacky ). It just plain out puts fish in the boat. And it will catch big bass! It looks like nothing you would think would catch bass but it does.

I find these work well and are very snagless, the "Owner Ultrahead Finesse Ball Head" and the "Z Man Finesse T.R.D."

I'm not saying those can't or won't work... But there seems to be a distinct advantage to using

The Zman elaztech material over the heavier Senko.. At least that's the jest coming from the guys that swear by it..

I will be interested in how everyone does with this bait. I looks like a "numbers" rig to me.

It does seem to be a numbers rig and does pretty well with a non aggressive bite. I have done better with it on smallmouth bass in rivers than anyplace else so far (allowing it to tumble in the current).

fishing user avatarprimetime reply :

I just starting experimenting with it but have been using Flick shake worms and not sure about this rig yet, I do love putting a nail in one end of a worm to cause the worm to float upright off the bottom, or in the back of a senko on the MJ rig to get more swing, I fish Senko's fast like a fluke and always jab a nail in back and behind the sack to get a gliding action....It works best over weeds, long casts, and getting the glide is easiest on a 6-7" senko, MJ rig or without the blade...Ned rig seems like a light line only clear water rocky bottom rig but I could be wrong?????? I think Ned rig means wacky rig with short shank jighead, nail in one end and shake???? Yes, or no? So many rigs out there now...

Go back up to the second post on this thread. The Ned Rig has nothing to do with a wacky rig.

A 1/16 oz. Charlie Brewer Slider head works.   Either the regular slider or spider style.  Their weedless 1/16 oz crappie head would also work for a more weedless approach to the ned rig.

fishing user avatarprimetime reply :

ok thanks. I have seen this in magazines with the zinkers and mushroom head... I have not tried it yet, I was thinking a nail weight for some reason and thought the TRD was the name of the rig, and Ned was with a nail weight and either wacky or no jighead at all.

Too many rigs out there but looking at how many people use this it must be legit....Impossible to put every rig in your arsenal these days....By the time you master the drop shot you have 9 new light line techniques that are waiting for you......and I am a sucker for trying them all, I just picked up a bunch of the strike king elaztach baits from a local shop and some zman elaztach stuff, I think I had a pack of Zinkers in there or if not I definitely saw those Hula sticks which I have been wanting to try....A lot of these rigs overlap if I step back and think about them, kind of like arguing about the Mojo rig, c-rig, and split shot rig.....

I love the Charlie Brewer Slider heads...Have been using them for years and still throw the slider worms and slider grubs...The Charlie Brewer webpage has some cool light line stuff on that site that is unique and people are missing out if not using them for sure.

fishing user avatarhoosierbass07 reply :

I ordered some Gopher Mushroom jigs so I could try the Ned Rig this year.  If you want to buy some mushroom jigs I would suggest buying them from the Gopher site.  I'm not positive but I read an article that said the guy who owns the Gopher company makes them all by himself from his house.   Whenever I open my little tackle box and look at them I feel they are specially designed and not mass produced in China or Central America.  I've not had a chance yet to use them but I will see how they do this spring and summer.  I plan on doing some Ned rigging this year.  Over the winter I placed two orders and they both shipped within a week or so and they arrived good.  No problems.

I placed an order from the Brewer site over the winter and bought his book, some slider heads and a few packs of slider worms.  They sent me all that plus a bunch of samples.  I was impressed and it was very very nice of them to send me free samples with my order.  I have to say some of the samples looked very good and I think would be good finesse lures for bass.  Whoever is running that shop down there in Tennessee is doing it right.

fishing user avatarhoosierbass07 reply :

Check out this guy on Youtube - Winkidoodles.  He's heavy into finesse fishing for bass and uses the Ned Rig a lot.  I think he's part of the Midwest Finesse group with Ned Kehde.

I had a similar experience a few years ago ordering from them, and they even sent me some decals and extra baits as well. I place a new order every year from them because of the fantastic service, plus the Slider Worm is one of the first baits I ever used for bass fishing as a kid, I was in love with the black and chart tail slider worm and still use them to this day as my go to finesse worm. They make great jigheads and offer some awesome designs that are not available elsewhere, especially the weedless jigs. The Slider system is no joke, it catches numbers and good fish, If fish will not hit a slider, you are most likely in a bad spot.....

The nail weight rig you're thinking of is referred to as Neko rig.

I feel ya Primetime! All the different rigs, wouldn't it be nice to have a "glossary" of all the rigs and techniques, all nicely ordered alphabetically? (Hint, hint) ; )

If you ever get bored and want to see lots of pictures of Ned Rig fish, check out from about page 50 of the 327 (and counting), pages of the KC area guys thread. Lots of reports on there are of fish that were caught on it which is fitting considering it's the same area that Ned Kedhe resides (the video of Ned on the first page of this thread is filmed at the ramp at Gardner Lake, 4 miles from my front door). It is a scary effective way to catch fish, especially smallmouth. I easily catch more smallmouth on it than any other rig each year, and not just little ones, I'm positive that I catch more keeper sized smallmouth (18+ inches), on a Ned Rig than anything else, maybe more than all other techniques combined. It isn't a big fish technique, but it certainly isn't the dink catcher I expected it to be.

and my largest Ned rig smallmouth of 4.80 pounds, caught during our spring get together for KC area members, that was also big bass of the day.

I've spent some time in the boat with some of the guys that helped perfect the rig and techniques and have spent a good deal of time molding it into the vital tool it's become for me. As far as gear goes, most dropshot rods make excellent Ned Rig rods. I use a 6' 10" ML/XF LTB with a 25 size Pfluegar Supreme XT and 2lb diameter/10lb test super slick braid with a 8 or 10lb fluoro leader, tied to a 3/32oz mushroom style head. For me the braid is a vital part of the setup. I feel I get far more bites, that it presents the bait better, and I hook way more fish. While the regular plastic stickworms do work, they Zman Zinkerz or TRDs and similar baits like the Strike King Zeros work best on this rig, especially once they start to get worn out (in?) and float really well. The biggest downside is you have to glue them to the jighead or they'll constantly slide down the hook on you. I find that a smaller hook seems to work best also. Longer hooks will work but make the bait more rigid and limit the ever so subtle wobble and wiggle that the bait has with the smaller hook. Set your drag fairly loose and use a similar hookset to a dropshot (a quick lift or just reel into them), and you can another site on the small hooks. The heads that I pour have a #1 size hook.

I think one of the biggest issues that most bass anglers have with this rig (myself included), is the constant need to feel your bait or be in contact with the bottom. A lot of times with all the wind we have I feel very little during my retrieve. In fact, a lot of times, when I start to feel something it's time to set the hook. The bait is often hovering just above the bottom and scooting along slowly like a small craw or baitfish meandering along.

I'm far from an expert on this rig, but as I'm sure you all can tell, it's earned a special place with me. I tried to keep it a secret at first, even from my fellow KC area guys (who I normally share everything with), but now the proverbial cat has been let out of the bag so thought I'd share my experience with it. This rig is a terrific equalizer too. If you're a non-boater, beginner, or if you take your wife/kids fishing with you, this is an excellent rig for them. They don't even have to know what a bite feels like or how to set the hook because they can just reel into them. Plus, when they lose one, and you're going to lose them, it cost less than $1 each time. My wife has become pretty proficient with a Ned Rig and I've had many days fishing with her that I spent more time unhooking her fish than I did fishing myself.

101_1475.jpg101_1530.jpg101_1722.jpg101_1724.jpg

This is a terrific little rig, and it doesn't just catch smallmouth (or just bass for that matter). It pains me a bit to see it getting the attention it is now but I knew it wouldn't stay a secret forever. Give it a try if you haven't, I think you may just be surprised how many fish, and how big of fish you can catch on this boring little rig.
