Tru Turn hooks 2025

Spent last week in the Pocono mountains on a fishing vacation. On the first day I stopped into a little tackle store in town (I mean LITTLE. It's in the guy's basement of his house ;D) Anyway, I notice he stocks Tru Turn hooks. I used these back in the 80's and early 90's, then got away from them.
I grab a couple of packs of 3/0 worm hooks. Man, they are sweet. I noticed a definite improvement in my hookup ratio. I don't know why I ever got away from them in the first place.
I still have uses for my Gammy EWG's and my Owner Mosquito hooks, but for worm fishing, it's Tru Turns for me.
Who else is still using these ?

I grew up fishing the Tru-Turn hook. When I learned to fish a Texas rig in the '80s...the Tru-Turn was THE hook. Your hookups are better because the Tru-turn is a straight-shank hook, which yields a better hook point angle. I got my butt kicked in the Oklahoma top-6 tournament back in '05 by a guy using a blue-fleck power worm, tru-turn hook, Stren clear blue fluorescent, and an old Berkley Lightning rod (I was his co-angler). Old school still works!

I have ONLY two kinds of worm hooks in my box, straight shank and Tru-Turn. I sure could use some more 4/0 and 5/0.

I have been going more and more to the old fashioned straight shanked worm hooks( pictured below) and moving away from EWG, which I only use for * and 6 inch *** Brush Bugs.
I tried the EWG's good hooks, but I find myself going back to the older worm hooks.

For those that don't know, the tru-turn has a hook point that is slightly twisted, so it accelerates under load. If I remember correctly, an ex-military guy invented it. If the Tru-turn format was used by Gammy or Owner...I'd buy some once again.

Muddy, that offset hook you posted was the next thing to come out after straight shank worm hooks (early '90s). It has a better hook point angle versus EWG's, and I use them as an 'in-between' hook. The only 'EWG' back in the day was the Eagle Claw Shaw Grigsby HP (high performance) hook. It was used for tubes only back then. Essentially, the higher a hook point is above the hook eye...the better the hook angle. That's an easy way to look at it.

I have some small hooks that I use when fishing for bluegill.
My grandpa used to have property on lake Jordan(Al) in the 80's near a small town called Slap Out. A man that worked at a small convenience store there called the Boys Store had a coke flat full of small tru-turn hooks that he always gave us when we bought crickets. 20-25 years later my dad and I have yet to run out of these hooks. We still have several hundred. ;D

Still use tru-turns. There used to be a great video showing how that hook would turn the hook point up as it was pulled forward through a basses closed mouth.

My father still uses tru turns. In fact, all he fishes is motor oil power worms on a texas rigged truturn tied to clear blue stren. You must have met him ;D

Tru-Turn hooks are made by the TTI-Blakemore Fishing Group, which began life as Tru-Turn Inc back in 1959.
For those who dont know, TTI-Blakemore Fishing Group is home of Tru-Turn, Daiichi, Xpoint, Mr. Crappie, Team Catfish and Standout hook brands, plus Blakemore Lure, home of the Roadrunner Lure.
As you can see, they are in very good company

I grabbed a few packs of the tru-turns from the ma and pa shop I frequent but have yet to put them to use. I'd like to see the video mentioned above if anyone can find it!

My only problem with TruTurn hooks ia they are dull out of the box. Work great with hook-up after you sharpen them.

Iused to use them all the time for worms. Stopped when I found they have a tendancy to really twist up the line.

didnt tru-turn have a 25,000 dollar reward if you caught a state or world record bass on them,
havent used them for years but still have some kicking around some where

They are all I use...for the past 10 yrs. plus...go through Blakemore to buy them...just stocked up and had a pack of 40 sent....like the red ones....The Roadrunners are very good, too...gut hooked fished significantly reduced...

I have a bunch of tru turn hooks somewhere I haven't used them in years. Once I found out about the Gama EWG and standard offset hooks I quit using them.

THE best worm hook there was and still is.
They won't sit flat, they look like they're bent all to hell, that point is going to hook meat one way or the other.
Walmart still stocks them here....

The shank of these are offset so you have to put them through and at striaght shot to the hook point ..or skin hook them and usaully if it has a bullet weight it shouldnt twist if your just hoppin it

I got a set of these hooks last season. I found that I was missing a lot of fish on Texas rigs. I switched to regular vmc resin eye offset worm hooks and stopped missing fish. I tried them again earlier this year, started missing fish again. Maybe it's just me, but I can't make them hook up like the VMC hooks do

I still use them, however I use standard offset more, aND don't rember why I switched.. I only use EWG for thick plastics. Tru turn gives a solid hookset. Thanks for posting this. Reminded me how much I like them.

I've heard of them, just never used any of these hooks. But, I generally like the idea as they are closer to a straight shanked hook in terms of having the open point . . . more so than an offset or an EWG.
If the supposed "cam" action works and the hook twists on a hook set, I suppose it makes sense that it might find "tissue" to snag up in while it is being pulled toward the fish's mouth opening. Or even in presentations where the fish sets the hook on itself.
I have reverted to straight shank worm hooks and just find my hook up ratio is so greatly improved over EWGs of any sort. I'm like others here and would only use an EWG, now, for really fat plastics where I do think they make more sense.
