A buddy of mine gave me a hook to use because I was having trouble with my hookups when flipping. My hookups have gone up significantly since switching to this hook. I haven't been able to find the straight shank hooks I want to use so it looks like I'll be using this one for a while. My main flipping bait is a Lake Fork Craw Tube. The hook he gave me is the one on the right of the attached picture with the line attached to it. The hook on the left is a 5/0 Gammy EWG Superline for reference (the hook I was using). I'm assuming it's some sort of Gamakatsu but I'm not positive. Anyone know the answer?
The hook on the left looks a lot like my EWG Owner's.
It looks to me like a Gamakatsu Monster EWG (Extra Wide Gap) Hook. I also have noticed a better hook up percentage by switching to a wider gap hook.
I don't think it's the Monster hook. The eye shank seems longer on the monster hooks. The thing that stands out most about this hook to me is that the point is not in line with the eye shank. For instance if the point of the hook projected a line upwards, it wouldn't be close to the eye of the hook contrary to the hook on the left.
I only use Gammys. I went through my line up of wide gap hooks and it doesn't look like a standard EWG, EWG Monster or a Deep Throat Wide Gap so you can definitely eliminate those from your choices.
Okay, that hooks name is RALPH ;D
Good one Muddy! LOL
I was just on Tackle Warehouse and have to agree with Dock Master, it looks like an Owner EWG.
Owner Wide Gap Plus Black Chrome Hooks From TW?
I'm using these hooks for 6" Power Slugs. I stole a pack from my uncle, size 6/0, but it looks a bit different so I'm not sure.

There is your answer on why you're hooking up better. As far as the name of the hook, I dont know.

Close, but I'm still not convinced. Unless the point on my hook has been bent outwards. The Owner still seems to have the point in line with they eye shank. In fact it says it in the description.

Dang, I was going to use that joke... Glad I looked first...
This description and picture from the Owner website makes me think it is the Owner Wide Gap Plus actually...:
"Wide Gap Plus, with its deep throat and dramatically elevated point, offers an extraordinary wide gap for extra hooking power. The plus point rides above the eye, providing a more positive and effective hook set. Ideal for weedless style Carolina Rig'N and Texas Rig'N of big tube baits and extra beefy soft plastic. Features include a XXX-strong forged shank, a bait-holding Z-Lock shoulder bend, Cutting Point®, and black chrome finish."
Thanks guys!

Ok, I'm not giving up now! LOL!
Let's try this: http://www.ownerhooks.com/pages/products/hooks/basshooks.htm
Check out the Wide Gap Plus. Let's remember, I'm a Gamakatsu user! ;D
Dang! Ya beat me too it! LOL
looks like the hook in this, could also be the owner

Thanks for helping basser!

Maybe that is the Owner. I'm just going to pretend it is because it looks an awful lot like my hook.
It's definitely not a Wide Gap Plus, in fact I'm sure it isn't an Owner, but Owner Rig'n Hooks feature the offset hookpoint like the one on the right. Great tube hook.
why not just get those owners and modify them with some pliers? just a thought :-?
Clyde.
Its not a owner it has a conical point as opposed to a cutting point it is forged though u can tell by the flat sides
Quotewhy not just get those owners and modify them with some pliers? just a thought :-?
The Rig'n Hook needs no modification, since it apready has the offset hookpoint. Its also an improvement over any hook of this type. Bending the hook usually weakens the temper, and if you are flipping cover, using biug hooksets, they will open up.
I'll check out the Rig'n Hook and see how that compares to this hook. My buddy bought the hook in question but can't remember where he got them. He says he usually only buys Gamakatsu but it doesn't appear to be anything they currently make. Hopefully someone else will chime in with the answer.
it looks exactly like my 4/0 gamakatsu's i use all the time, but i bought in bulk so i do not have the packages to give a more precise answer
4/0 gamakatsu ewg (extra wide gap)
Relatively known trick is to twist the shank so that the point is misaligned with the shank. Any wide gap hook would suffice.
i was going to correct myself and say it was a mustad ultra lock ewg but the angle by the eyelit is not as bent. i am definitely going to say it is a gamakatsu ewg worm hook not the superline obviously since you have that already. just brink the hook to cabela's or bass pro or something and start comparing packages
I've edited the photograph with a line to show how much the point is above the eye on this hook compared to the Gamakatsu EWG 5/0. I'm fairly certain this isn't a Gamakatsu EWG. If they made an Extra Extra Wide Gap, we might be on to something.

Not a Gammie as all of their EWG hoos have the point inline with the eye.
