Jerkbait 2025

fishing user avatarJim Sutter reply :

Who makes your favorite Jerkbait? Also, what are your two favorite colors?

fishing user avatarMN Fisher reply :

I've been a Rapala fan for 40+ years - haven't seen a reason to change yet.

Perch and the classic Silver top the list.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

Megabass Vision 110.  Once you own one, you will not be the same> broke.

Also, the Lucky Craft Pointer would be my second favorite.

fishing user avatarJim Sutter reply :

MN Fisher,

Thank you for that information. I will definitely get one of each.

FishTank,

Thank you for that information. What are your prefer colors?

fishing user avatargimruis reply :

I like rapalas too but the hooks are sometimes not great on them so I'll replace the trebles.  I just got a megabass vision 110 for Christmas and I intend to use it this spring.  The issue with such an expensive lure where I fish is pike.  They are lure wreckers if they don't trim the line off completely.

Favorite pattern is perch.  Most smallmouth lakes/rivers around here with brownies have perch as the natural forage.

fishing user avatarChadm reply :

Megabass Vision 110, Lucky Craft Flash Pointer, and Jackall Rerange are my top 3!  Love anything in a Ghost Minnow color!

fishing user avatarJim Sutter reply :

Chadm,

Thank you for your reply. I will be sure to purchase some lures in the Ghost Minnow color.

fishing user avatarWay north bass guy reply :

My favourite for several years now has been the Strike King KVD, in mainly the larger size but I’ve also done well with the smaller size when the bass are feeding on smaller bait. For the shallower, perch/bluegill based lakes I’ve done best with the top two colours, the bottom one has been the best for me on deeper, smelt/herring based lakes. The larger ones are also super baits for spring pike fishing.

fishing user avatarJim Sutter reply :

Way north bass guy,

Thank you for your information regarding Jerkbaits. I will be sure to add your choice of colors to my tackle box.

fishing user avatarTizi reply :

I have several:  6th Sense Provoke 106, Vision 110 (and +1 and +2), Strike King KVD 300 and deep, and Rapala Shadow Rap.  I go with perch, trout and ghost colors.

fishing user avatarwalleyecrazy reply :

6th sense provoke 106x has become my go to. I usually fish it in the perch or the gold reactor color.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

Smithwick rogue in clown color.  That is about the only jerkbait I can get a bite on.

fishing user avatarScott F reply :

Lucky Craft Pointer in Chartreuse Shad.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

I like jerkbaits.

After the 2018 season, I said this;

"The SK KVD 300 & 300 Deep as well as the Megabass ITO Vision 110 and the 110+1 were again very good.  As well as the Megabass Ito Vision 110 FX Tour Premium; especially where & when I was looking for extra casting distance."

After the 2019 season I said this:

"My Jerkbait addiction hasn’t waned and while I threw a few different makes & models, the Megabass Vision 110 and the 110 plus 1 both in GP Pro Perch as well as the SK KVD 300 and 300 Deep also Ayu & Perch did quite a bit of damage for me again this season; both early & later in the year.   Honorable mention goes to the LUCKY CRAFT Slender Pointer 127MR; an older model ‘real skin’ brown trout pattern."

A-Jay

fishing user avatarDitchPanda reply :

My favorite is the rapala shadow rap in bone...my second favorite is the rapala xrap in silver...but there is a big gap between my 1 and 2

For the 110>Pro Blue and Deadly Black but any will work.

In the Pointer> American Shad, Ghost Minnow, Aura Black and Chartreuse Shad.  These 4 will cover just about any water condition.

fishing user avatarJim Sutter reply :

Tizi,

Thank you for your information. I will be sure to purchase one of each of the colors you suggested.

Walleyecrazy,

Thank you for your information. The perch and gold reactor colors will be added to my tackle box.

Bankbeater,

Thank you for your information. I love clown color lures. I believe the Smithwick lure you named.

Scott F,

Thank you for chiming in. I will purchase a Lucky Craft Pointer in Chartreuse Shad.

A-Jay,

I appreciate your information and pictures. I will be throwing far more Jerkbaits this season.

DitchPanda,

Thank you, for adding a few more lures to my tackle box. Like I stated above, Jerkbaits were never my thing. but, this year Jerkbaits will be on the menu in many brands and colors.

FishTank,

Thank you for getting back to me with those colors.

fishing user avatarDitchPanda reply :

Be careful jerkbaits and crankbaits are both slippery slopes..you may be telling yourself I'll just get half a dozen baits to try...fifty baits later your wondering when it will stop!

That said a jerkbait certain times of the year is unreal...when it's on nothing can beat it in my experience.

Last spring I fished a local lake...fishing near a rock jetty I threw lipless and squarebills along side of it without a touch...tried a bladed jig nada...drug a jig around nada...switched to a jerkbait 3 jerks in got a 3lber...over the next hour I caught probably 10 more nice bass from the same little 15 yard stretch

I love fishing a provoke. Best color for me has been chartreuse pearl.

I got a Rapala Ripstop not long ago and I really like the action on it, but I haven't had a hit on it yet.

fishing user avatarJoePhish reply :

Rapala X-Rap XR10 in Silver is my go to suspending jerk bait. I have a bunch of other but that one gets the most fish for me. I ditch the feathered treble and upsize the hooks. I like to upsize the hooks on some jerk baits because I find bass sometimes just slash at the bait and aren't able to swallow it.

I also often throw a floating Zerek Sabre Dance 85 in Black Shad (BS) which is pretty much chrome with a black back and a white belly. It's a discontinued bait that's hard to find in the States.

Besides the colors Silver or Chrome I like using White and sometimes Gold.

Don’t you find that when you upsize the hooks on a suspending jerkbait that the bigger hooks cause the lure to sink on the pause instead of suspend?

Yes. I like a slow sink sometimes, especially in the fall.

I have some of the ripstops as well. I’ve done ok on them, but I find that they take a little more input to get the best action out of them. They take a little harder twitch of the rod to get them to move, likely due to the extra lip on the tail.

fishing user avatarrangerjockey reply :

On Table Rock, depending on water clarity and cloud cover, the Spro McStick in blue bandit and Norman flake. The Vision 110 and 110+ in pro blue, Tennessee shad and French pearl and good Ol' Table Rock shad in dirty water.

fishing user avatarGreenPig reply :

I've got a 3700 deep Plano full of most brands and a wide assortment of colors. I have no dividers in it, so it's 4 long slots. I choose which slot I'll extract a jerkbait with Einy Meeny Miny Moe. Then I'll grab one and of course they're all hooked together and shake. The first one to shake loose gets fished. This selection style works only if you fish with confidence. ????

fishing user avatarNHBull reply :

The vision 110’ from silent to +2, has out produced every other JB I own combined. Perch, white get the call most days.  Price doesn’t  bother me as I have never lost one.

I agree. My experience is that the ripstop likes a more aggressive rod action. The lip on the tail does everything it says on the tin, though. When it stops, boy it stops.

fishing user avatarJim Sutter reply :

galyonj,

Thank you for your information. I will try and find a Provoke in Chartreuse Pearl.

JoePhish,

Thank you for your information. I will try to locate a Rapala X-Rap XR10 in Silver.

rangerjockey,

Thank you for adding to this discussion. I will try and locate the lures you recommended.

GreenPig,

What ever works.

NHBull,

Thank you for your suggestions.

fishing user avatarDwight Hottle reply :

My favorite jerk baits & colors depend on what body of water I'm fishing. For largemouth I like pointer 128's in shell white & aurora gold. For smallmouth I like ima flit 120 in chartreuse shad. If fishing the great lakes system or other waters with gobies I like lc pointers 100, 127 & 128 in shrimp. Also like smithwick rogues deep divers in tiger minnow color. Molty brown colors with some black replicate the gobies. Vision 110 +2 in french pearl is a winner for both species.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

My favorite changes often, just depends on what the fish's favorite is at the moment.

Lucky Craft Pointer 78, 100, Slender Pointer 97MR,112MR,127MR-NC Shell White, Crack, MS American Shad, Chartreuse Shad, Table Rock Shad, Nishki, Skeet's Magic.

6th Sense Provoke-French Bone Pearl, Table Rock Pro, Wabi Sabi

Duo Realis 110sp, 120sp, Rozante 77sp-Neo Pearl, Purple Mist, Matte pearl/chartreuse

Strike King 300-Clown, Chrome Blue

Duel Hardcore Minnow Flat SP-Shad

fishing user avatarFishes in trees reply :

My favorite one is a Lucky Craft Pointer 100 SP in Table Rock Shad.   Sometimes I will use the regular one, other times, I got on with red hooks that works just as good.

At last count, I had more than a hundred jerk baits, but less than 200.  They lend themselves to collecting.   Back in the day when I was fishing BFL's in the Ozark division there was a tournament every year that had a monster jerk bait bite. In most of those, if you weren't fishing a Lucky Craft, you were fishing for 10th place or lower.

One buddy of mine, who currently fishes BFL's tells me that the Vision 110 is incrementally better than the Lucky Craft and has the tournament results to prove it.  I wouldn't know - I haven't been to an early spring BFL Ozark division tournament in ten years or so now.  But my buddy has, and while he might engage in hyperbole from time to time, he seldom tells me outright lies.   I haven't gotten into those baits yet, but the Lucky Strike Rick Clunn jerk bait is a very close copy of the Vision 110.  I bought a dozen of those and if I happen to get out fishing during jerk bait season, that is a bait I'm going to throw for a while, just to see.

Before I found out about Lucky Craft baits, many years ago,  I had a decent tournament on a Bomber Long A (clown color) where I finished one fish out of the money at 10.5 lbs and I had a different tournament  ( on Grand Lake ) where a big Rapala Husky Jerk, in clown color ( with 3 suspend dots on the belly ) got me several nice fish, again a pound or so out of the money.

I never could get Lucky Craft Staysees to work in a tournament situation, but in practice situations I had a day where on  Grand Lake, going south from Sail Boat Bridge, but before you got to Shangra La - 4 points in a row got me a 19 to 21 inch fish.  That bait had a blue back blending to chatruese sides blending to a pearl belly, with a bright orange spot directly behind the lip of the bait.  With a long cast and 8 lb line, I was getting that bait at least 10' down.  Never been able to duplicate that, and I've tried several times in similar conditions.

Hope this helps.

fishing user avatarJim Sutter reply :
