Yellow 2025

Still digging through my stuff in preparation for fishing next month, I've found several yellow baits of different styles. Some of these are pretty old. I've found Shore Minnow pattern yellow Zara Spook, Hula poppers, curly and straight tail grubs, weedless spoons with a yellow feather tail, Ozark Woodchopper prop bait, and a couple of other baits as well. I caught fish on most of these baits years ago. Now, I rarely see yellow bass lures being sold much, or talked about much either. It seems like yellow has all but been forgotten these days. Anyone still fishing with yellow lures? Any thoughts or opinions?

I use a lot of chartreuse but thats not yellow . Dont use it much anymore . The old yellow lures I threw were Pico Perch , Beetle spins , grubs , spinnerbaits and buzzbaits . I still have a yellow Pico Perch with black dots .

I still have a yellow Little George, Lazy Ike, and Hula Popper. Growing up I had a friend that always fished with a black and yellow spinnerbait. I don't think he ever got skunked when he used that bait.

I can't tell yellow from chartreuse most of the time. Hopefully the fish can't either.

In Fisherman article mentioned that bass see chartreuse as white. I'd think that would apply to yellow as well.

love that color. have some big zoom trick worms in yellow. after seeing this get pulled off of a snagged carp ive thrown it a hell of a lot more!

i have some pictures of it's mouth, i dont think i'd want to touch the thing it looks like the creature from the old movie "dreamcatcher"

Zoom's got a color, bruised banana, that's like a dirty yellow/brown swirl that'd be a dang near perfect example of matching the hatch for…whatever that critter is.

I remember seeing it on the rack at my local Academy.

Ahhh, Fort Dirty. I love it so. Never caught a single thing off Louisville Point. Pretty park, though.

The only yellow bait I can remember having was an old Shannon Twin Spin spinnerbait. My brother and I both had them. I did see him catch a few bass on his. I never even got a sniff with mine. I may still have it in an old tackle box around here somewhere.

There's very solid scientific research that shows that largemouth can't tell the difference between yellow and white. People can tell the difference so yellow lures will still sell as long as they are labeled chartreuse.????

There isn't scientific proof how bass interpret the color spectrum. Studies using the eye rod and cones assume how bass see color under controlled lighting conditions based on how humans see colors.

Todays chartreuse is offered in a wide variety of yellows and yellow/lime green tones, very difficult to differentiate yellow from chartreuse in today's lure offerings.

When I was a teenager in the late seventies, I red an article by Doug Hannon. In the Article he had done some studies that he believed proved bass are repelled by the color yellow, and attracted to green. I believed everything I red back then so I stopped using my very productive yellow sonic, and yellow spinner bait. A few days after reading the article a friend of mine and I went fishing at our favorite fishing hole. He put a single blade yellow spinner bait on exactly like the one I owned. Of course I had robbed a green skirt off of a Hula Popper and replace the yellow one on my spinner bait. I then informed my friend that it was a scientific fact that yellow was the worst color to fish. He landed four bass, to my zero. You would think I would have given up on the theory at that point, but I was a little stubborn. My friend was just lucky. The fish he caught hit out of a defense reaction, because they were so scared of the color, and had to strike out of fear. I was sure it was just a once in a lifetime event. After all, the bass professor had science on his side. Science will win out over luck in the long run. I continued to avoid all yellow lures. The funny thing is I no longer believe yellow repels bass, but still avoid yellow lures. Some superstitions are hard to ignore. I'm sure that friend still fishes yellow spinner baits and continues to have great luck. I still have the yellow sonic, I'm going to force myself to fish it some time.

Call me bigoted, but while chartreuse & certain shades of gold are allowed in my boat, yellow isn't - at all. Don't like that color - superstitious about it - no yellow baits, yellow line, yellow logos , won't wear yellow shirts or shorts, won't wear yellow hats - don't like nothing about that color.

I can't exactly describe the difference between chartreuse and certain shades of gold and yellow, but I know it when I see it and chartreuse & gold are ok and yellow isn't.

I had a yellow and black Smithwick Devil's Horse that was a very good top water. Lost it on a big Smallie years ago. Also have a black and yellow Spence Scout that never did catch a fish. Never threw it much as I just didn't have the confidence in it.

There are two studies on vision in largemouth bass that are very solid. The first was in 1937 and another in 2018. They trained bass to recognize a target color to receive food. Both studies found that bass had a hard time differentiating between blue and black and between yellow and white. My interpretation is that bass do not have cones that can detect the blue spectrum very well. White contains all colors in the spectrum. If you remove the blue light from white light you get yellow. If you can't see the blue then yellow and white look the same. None of this means that bass won't hit a yellow lure, it just means that it looks a lot like a white lure to them. This graph is from the 2018 study and shows how well the bass trained to certain colors could actually differentiate that color from the others.

It's not possible to determine how the bass interprets what they see under controlled lighting conditions or in the wild. Bass react differently to the same shade of color white that the human eye can't see a difference for example depending on the manufacturer of the paint used. There is more to how a animals brain interprets the color spectrum the rods and cones or controlled studies.

The longer you fish the less you will be sure of.

I still use yellow for several applications.

4" yellow grub used as a trailer on a blue/chartreuse/white spinnerbait is very effective in muddy water.

Yellow Snagless Sally is still one of my favorite lures.

Yellow rubber spinnerbait skirt as a trailer on a black nickle Johnson Silver Minnow.

Black and Yellow spinnerbait

I have painted crankbaits Black and Yellow and have done reasonably well on them in the Atchafalaya Basin.

Mo I associate Spring Craw color crankbaits to yellow. But true they have other color in the pattern. Brown generally. Outside of a yellow grub I may never have thrown anything that was solid yellow.

I just picked up on a new Spring Craw crankbait pattern put out by Googan. They call it “corn pop”. Spring Craw pattern works all season on the river.

Thought I’d be a bad boy and pick up something they put out. They had a solid black version of a pop r with a chartreuse tail that looks to work out well on the river also. I don’t care about their name, status or YouTube presence. I believe 100% those two baits will produce fish for me. That’s all I care about.
