Lure Quizz ! 2024

fishing user avatarMaxDal reply :

MODERATORS ! Feel free to delete this topic if there's already such a quizz in the forum.

I've looked for one with the search engine but wasn't able to locate one. Yet, I'm pretty new to this great forum, so maybe the Senior Member already had such a quizz.

Anyway, here's the idea ...

One guy post a picture of a lure (he's got, or a picture he found)... then the rest of us have to identify it (usually only the brand and the name of the lure) !

The one who finds the name of the bait get the right to post the next picture.... 8-)

It's just for fun, and it can help us discover baits we don't know.

At some points, some hardcore "Lure quizz" players browse though the whole internet to find the name of one particular bait, which helps them discover new lures (and, in the long run, that helps the bait-monkey too   ;D)

So what do you think ?

fishing user avatarMaxDal reply :

Well ... no objections !

So, I will just give the quizz a start.

Here are the rules.  :)

1- Respect all the rules of BR

2- Post a lure that people can find (no home-made unknown, unnamed lure) (Don't post low-quality picture)

3- The one who finds the lure, posts the next picture

4- People have to give both the brand and the name of the lure to win

5- If the lure displayed is a sure knock-off of another popular lure, the name and brand of the original lure are the infos that one must give.

(for instance all the brush hog knock-offs, the one who says "ZOOM Brush Hog" wins)

Hope you have fun, here's the first lure. Easy one to get the quizz started !

PS: Don't post your picture with a hot-link or it'll be to easy to identify, don't let the name of the bait in the name of the picture either.

Is that made by Heddon and perhaps a popper? Actually it may not be a popper but that's the only thing close to what I want to call it.

I'm guessing heddon, I just can't think of the name.................

:)

fishing user avatarGitRDoneIke23 reply :

Offical guess............Heddon Zaragossa? :-? :-?

fishing user avatarGobbleDog reply :

It's called a Dalton Special.  Here's an article about it that I just Googled:

The name is synonymous with wood plugs and topwater bass fishing. For more than 60 years the Dalton Special has maintained a reputable position in the topwater wood plug industry and has earned undeniable status as a legend of topwater fishing success.

The Dalton Special was first designed and whittled by Edward Browne in the fall of 1928. Not long after, Paul Mannon, the owner of Angler Bait Co. (A.B.C.) of Orlando, Florida was given the production right and he named it the Angler Plug. He continued to make small numbers of the lure until 1933 when he entered into a partnership with Dazzy Vance of the old Brooklyn Dodgers baseball fame (1922-1936) to form the Dazzy Vance Bait Co. The plug was then called the Angle Frog Bait and production continued under the Vance name through 1934 when Mannon was killed in an auto accident. His widow took the remaining plugs in his estate to the Mitchell Tackle Shop in Orlando to sell them.

Enter P.P. Dalton. He bought all of the blanks and finished plugs Mitchell had for 20 cents each and, for the next several months, painted and sold Dalton Specials during his travels.

When Dalton was at Lake Okeechobee in 1935, he purchased some large black bass from a commercial netter out on the lake. Upon his return to shore, he had his picture taken with the bass and one of his plugs. The photo made the local paper and plug sales soared, so much so in fact, that he could no longer make and paint enough to meet demand. So, that same year he patented the plug and entered into a production arrangement with the Shakespeare Co. that continued until just after World War II.

At that point, Dalton and Shakespeare parted ways and the production rights went to the Florida Fishing Tackle Co. (Barracuda Brand Products). They marketed the plug until 1975 when it was sold to Marine Metal Products Co. of Clearwater, Florida, a manufacturer of aeration systems.

In late 1987, Marine Metal Products fishing tackle division was sold to Luhr Jensen, and the Special moved 2,700 miles west to Hood River, Oregon. Under the Luhr Jensen label, the Dalton[ch65533] once again returned to its original sugar pine configuration. Demand for the plug blossomed during the late '80s in light of a lot of publicity in several popular fishing publications concerning wood plugs. Receiving special attention were the more historic ones such as the Bass-Oreno, Nip-I-Diddee and, of course, the Dalton Special. These are all now offered by Luhr Jensen, again in wood, with the original riggings and finishes for distribution under the Luhr Jensen Classic Woods[ch65533] label.

fishing user avatarGitRDoneIke23 reply :

Hey since nobody guessed it, post another one. or I have one I can post............... :)

:)

Interesting article BTW.

fishing user avatarMaxDal reply :

Nice one ..... But the one that puts the picture can not answer  :) !

Anyway, only the one who gives the full name & brand wins .... so when you only know the brand ! Don't post too soon or you'll give others hint that they may find useful.  :)

Nice one Gobbledog, but put another one and let us struggle  ;D

fishing user avatarGobbleDog reply :

Here's one they've been making for 50+ years.  I found one in my dad's old tacklebox and thought it was extremely rare... but apparently it isn't.

fishing user avatardetroit1 reply :

Sorry folks- but the Hellbender was made by Whopper Stopper and not Heddon. The w/s has the heart shaped bill, and the other popular lure like this was made by Bomber, and had a rounded lip.(called the Water Dog). I don't think Heddon made a lure like that. Anyways, I have a half dozen of these that never see water anymore...

And the lure name with a R ....

Look for a brand that uses a transfer system known as "Mag Drive" !

(Not daiwa, yop cause Daiwa used it too at some point, they actually designed it.)

fishing user avatarMaxDal reply :

Well, this is up to you... there is no such thin as a time-limit on this game.

I remember playing this game on a french fishing website (which I left because of the absence of moderators  :-X).

And one bait came out, nobody found what it was.

The topic went down on the forum, I came accross it, knew what the bait was and gived the thread a new life  ;D.

But sure, if you want to keep the topic alive, you can tell us and maybe like put another one for us to struggle  8-).

fishing user avatarMaxDal reply :

Ok so here's the next challenge.

New rule though : to avoid playing just with Daniel :) !

From now on, it's not permitted for one player to give back-to-back answers on the posted lures.

Let me explain myself :

For instance,

1- Player X posts a lure

2 - Player Y finds the lure

3 - Player Y posts a new lure

4 - Player X can not answer this one within the first 24 hours.

Is that OK with everyone participating ?

There you go with the new one

(Here T-rig is not allowed to answer in the first 24 hours) ;D

Ok let's be serious .. The brand which manufactures this lure was established in 1932 (pretty much a mile-stone in Bass Fishing History ... some guy from Georgia caught a decent bass this same year  :D).

Anyway, here's a hint : the brand has an history of funky-looking crankbaits featuring weird lips and little wings on the body.

One of their crankbaits really is a Bass trap  :P !

Any idead ?

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

The Creek Chub Bait Co

It is a Creek Chub Perch Scale Wigglefish

Aproximately two miles from this spot, on June 2, 1932, George W. Perry, a 19-year old farm boy, caught was to become America's most famous fish. The twenty-two pound four ounce largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoldes) exceeded the existing record by more than two pounds has has retained the world record for more than fifty years. Perry and his friend, J.E. Page, were fishing in Montgomery Lake, a slough off the Ocmulgee River, not for trophies but to bring food to the table during those days of the great depression. The fish was caught on a Creek Chub Perch Scale Wigglefish, Perry's only lure, and was 32 1/2 inches in length and 28 1/2 inches in girth. The weight and measurements were taken, recorded and notarized in Helena, Georgia and Perry's only reward was seventy-five dollars in merchandise as first prize in Field and Stream Magazine's fishing contest. The longstanding record is one of the reasons that the largemouth bass was made Georgia's Official State Fish. Montgomery Lake is today part of the Department of natural Resources' Horse Creek Wildlife Management Area.

fishing user avatarMaxDal reply :

Well .... a little misunderstanding here Rondef ! Indeed the world record largemouth bass was caught with a CCBO Wigglefish ....

But the lure in picture is not a CCBO. The hint I was giving was that the brand was founded in 1932 (the year the WR Largemouth Bass was caught by George Washington Perry)

Be sure to check the picture of the lure to find on the previous page. :D

Sven & Ole's Miracle Fishin Loors

No sir.  I could not find this lure on google, but finally found it on ebay a few days ago... It was listed With a Lazy Ike lure, and the pair went for about $30... I emailed the guy that won, and he filled me in on the lure's name/history/etc...

fishing user avatarMaxDal reply :

Cooper Loor by the Cooper Lure Co .....

Wasn't able to find much info about it, except that the company was located in West Huron Street in Chicago, IL.

I just wonder how they swim ? Do you have one ?

fishing user avatarAvalonjohn44 reply :

Wow, all I can say is good work.  Yup, a cooper loor bubble frog.  Some people called them Cooper Loopers... I got one a few months ago as part of an ebay auction, and have only just found out what it was.  I think I'm gonna put it in a case...

Was it the clue, or did you already know about the lure?  Do you have any good links further identifying it?

Oh, and it's your turn!

fishing user avatarMaxDal reply :

Well I gotta say my friend Google was pretty helpfull on that one.

I'm almost sure I have already seen this frog before, but I would have never been able to tell you the name if it wasn't for your clue and Google.  :D

The distribution of these baits seemed to be very limited in both time and space. Pretty confidential distribution it seems.

Nice little frog anyway !  8-)

OK here's the next bait. Let's go to Japan a little bit.

I think that we should be able to see Daniel back with this one  :P !

fishing user avatarAvalonjohn44 reply :

Very odd bait, I've never seen it before but it reminds me of (though I know it's not...) the Anthrax... I like your white-out job on the pic.

fishing user avatarAvalonjohn44 reply :

I'm stumped.  I'm searching google and ebay, and finding nothing.

fishing user avatardumb_dog11 reply :

yeah, i looked at every brand on ichiban tackle too and ...... nothing

fishing user avatarAvalonjohn44 reply :

I just finished going thru almost every lure manufacturer on ***, and still haven't figured it out.  I give up on this one.

fishing user avatarMaxDal reply :

I reckon this lure is quite a gimmick, and I'm going to use it.

But I thought it was a good way to try and have T-rig back in business with japanese stuff.... well maybe, he hasn't seen the post ! :P

Anyway, here's a hint !

The name of the bait (brand+model) contains the words :

- Rolling

- Tackle

...and it is available in two different sizes : 77 - 88

Ok I pretty much gave it away  :D

Dumbdog.. looking for it on ichibantackle was pretty clever ! Infortunately you won't find it there. I'll just say that nowadays the most comprehensive lure source has to be EBAY !  ;)

fishing user avatarMaxDal reply :

There you go Grimlin !

Now you guys know Tackle House ... they do have a couple of weird-looking lures !! Lots of upside down designs by them.

You're next grimlin. :D

fishing user avatarAvalonjohn44 reply :

That was a rough one.  What is the action on that bait, Maxdal?

fishing user avatarMaxDal reply :

Well, that's a weird lure, John !

I don't have one, but a friend of mine uses it for seabass, so I got the chance to try it a little.

I wasn't very impressed by it.

I would say that the best point of this lure is that it's freaking heavy for its size..... Pretty good castability and a good weight to fish it vertically. Kinda like a vertical jerkbait, pretty weird !

Naturally, it has a strong rolling and you mainly fish vertical. I wasn't very impressed by the action on a steady retrieve.

They also use it for light trolling sometimes.

So, Grimlin, let's see the next lure. :D

fishing user avatargrimlin reply :

I agree, looks like the River2Sea Golden Crank 40.
fishing user avatarMaxDal reply :

Good on the Norman Bass XL.  :D

I see you already knew you had it right.

By the way, here's a little reminder :

Here are the rules.

That, is of course if you guys think the rules are fair. We can sure amend the Lure Quizz Constitution at any time.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all lures are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Lifelikeness, Liberty to stay at the bottom of the lake, and the Pursuit of Bass."

fishing user avatarJimzee reply :

Well I guess I will go ahead and post a lure since I'm sure it's a River2Sea Gold N' Crank.

Back to the land of the rising sun for this one.  You Japanese lure fanatics will surely jump right on this.

No, the Gan Craft Ayuja is 6" long. The bait in question only measures aprox. 2.3" . :D

fishing user avatarMaxDal reply :

Gee nice one Daniel !

I gotta say I don't know this one.

It's true though that it looks like a Staysee 60SP by LC.

The color and the white lips/jaws of the fish sure look like a Gan Craft, but it's not.

Nah I know a couple of brands with Craft ... but it's not among the brand I know. Not even a North Craft.

You got me on this one Daniel. :D

fishing user avatarT-rig reply :

Yes Max, you're right, it does look like a staysee 60sp. I'll solve the mystery. It's a KEN Craft Lineage Shad 57SP.

fishing user avatarMaxDal reply :

That was a tough one !

Nice one.

Ken Craft indeed, I knew I had already seen such a deep lateral line on another lure. Just couldn't place it.

I guess you can post a new one. :D

What's funny is that if you play the same game in france, people are more likely to know only japanese lures and will have a hard time identifying a Bagley, which sucks to my opinion.

fishing user avatarAvalonjohn44 reply :

Sweet Pea?

fishing user avatarJimzee reply :

Think one size bigger.

fishing user avatarAvalonjohn44 reply :

LOL E2?

fishing user avatarJimzee reply :

Now think one size smaller. Here's a hint, this one is a little harder to find and usually brings a premium on Ebay between $30-$40. This model shown was made in 2005 and will not be found as easy as the rest.  The Natural said he wouldn't sell his for $100 if someone offered it to him.

fishing user avatarAvalonjohn44 reply :

Crap, I dunno.  1.5?

The Mutt?

fishing user avatarJimzee reply :

Do a Ebay search on completed listings for zoom crankbait.  Someone got a great deal on one for around $18.

fishing user avatarJimzee reply :

Alright guys, no other guesses I will give it up. It is a WEC Wobbler in chocolate shad color. Getting harder to find too.

Ok guys I don't want to be the one that puts a damper on everything.

So let's prevent this thread from straying apart too soo.

One of the key rules of the game is that we can not post pictures whenever we'd like to. We have to find the name of the previously posted "unknown" lure.

Rule 3 : The one who finds the lure, posts the next picture

And it seems to me, nobody found the name of the lure Rumbal posted. It sure is a though one, but we have to find it to carry on :D !

Then when you're posting here on bassresource click the third button on the top row from the left on the actual post screen. The one that looks like a little postcard and says "Insert Image" when you mouse hover over it. It will post a an img and a /img surrounded by brackets and you need to paste the location string in between the img and the /img brackets. Once you click Post it will appear like this:

You can do it! Let me know if you have trouble.

Hmm..ok I will make it fairly easy. The maker shouldn't be a problem to figure out  :D but the lure is fairly interesting and unique...

fishing user avatarshorefisher reply :

Avalonjohn you are correct, additionally this particular king basser was made for the US Navy as a survival lure.  Your turn sir!

Cool, I'll find a pic and list it...

fishing user avatarAvalonjohn44 reply :

Here it is.  Probably easy, but it took me a while to identify it.  I bought one just like this at an estate auction recently.

Correct.  The picture is actually the Whomper Stomper version of the Bug N Bass, but close enough.  Your turn to post a pic!

Sorry but I can't do it for the moment - I registered myself 2 days ago and it seems I will be able to post an image only after 10 messages; due to the fact that I do not intend to send some messages just to reach # 10 I will say ,,pass,, for now. So I will let this task for you as long as you was the winner before me. Thanks.
