Iconic/Timeless Lures 2025

fishing user avatarTedderX reply :

Growing up as a kid my father often talked about the "daredevil" lure.  There's a specific company out there but they're so common you can find them at any bait shop, even most of the gas stations sell them around here.

What other classic and timeless lures are there out there that any old timer would know?  Is there a specific color or shape?  Do they actually work?

Post a picture of it!  Tell us about it!

For the purpose of this topic, only man-made lures.  No worms, crickets, livers, etc. Haha

Roadrunner, Beetle Spin, Roostertail, Mepps, Hula Popper, Jitterbug, Crazy Crawler, Pop R, Rattle Trap, Jelly Worm, Original Rapala, Wee R, lots of classics out there that still catch fish.

Lucky 13

fishing user avatarcgolf reply :

Single tail grub, but not sure if soft plastics go back far enough to be classics

also wanted to toss in the shad rap, still one of the best Shad style baits out there.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

The old humpback rebel in chrome with a blue back is the one that my uncle always fished.

fishing user avatarFish the Mitt reply :

Oldest lure in my box... and I still use it.

old AC shiner plugs still catch plenty of fish

fishing user avatarMunkin reply :

Every bass fisherman I know has had a Daredevil spoon at one time in their life. I tried but never caught anything on them? Only spoon that has worked for me is the Johnson Silver Minnow and it is a pickerel magnet.

fishing user avatarGundog reply :

Definitely a Johnson Silver Minnow. It was one of the first lures that I really geeked out over. It is probably responsible for the addiction I have now. The wobbling action, I thought, would attract bass from miles away. :D

Original, Floating Rapala and Smithwick Devils Horse

fishing user avatarBassThumb reply :

Rapala Shad Rap in chartreuse and white, size 7 or 9.

They'll continue to work as long as Rapala continues to produce them.

I love the Dalton Special and dont have one . I've been watching for one to show up . If anybody has one and would like to trade, we can work something out .

fishing user avatarWbeadlescomb reply :

Two guys in an aluminum boat beat our eyes out in a tournament throwing beetle spins. Big cold front came in and you couldn't buy a bite on a traditional lure but they'd caught 10-11lbs on a beetle spin

fishing user avatarTedderX reply :

You guys are leaving out colors.  Haha

I'm putting together a list, I'll be purchasing them all.  I'm particularly interested in the "original" color they came in.  The original manufacturer/name brand would be great too.

I'm making a gift for my father that these will go on a board that hangs from the wall.  Things that he would recognize and are/were popular.

Definitely a knock off Dardevil, not Eppingers without the devil logo.

Spoons are the oldest class of lures followed by weight hooks called jigs.

Zara spook has been around continuous for over 75 years and still use it. The Creek Chub injured minnow, pikie minnow were my first wooden lures in the 50's along chugger, darter, bass Oreno, river runts and bombers. Smithwick buck n brawl and pa scooter were my favorite top lures along with jitter bugs.

1st jigs were Doll Fly made with polar bear hair with Pedigo pork trailers.

1st soft plastic worms were Creme followed Mann's jelly worms.

Still my first choice of Spinners.  Not too many ways I can't fish them

Mepps-C1Ms-Silver-Comet-Mino-Bait-1-6-Ou

The old Comet Mino is the lure that really got me going in Bass fishing years ago.  I found one on a bank and tied it on and caught a 2 lb'er.  Up til then I was a "bobber/nightcrawler" kinda guy.  I still use them.  Got a brand new silver and gold one just waiting to be thrown.  Even though I don't throw them very often, they rarely let me down when I do.

Also...Raul mentioned the Whopper Stopper Hellbenders.  I collect them but I ALSO throw them up North in some of the deeper lakes I fish.  Pike love them.  Those suckers dive DEEEP.

I have an uncle from Wisconsin who is 70+ years old and a die hard angler. Whenever he comes to visit me in MA he has free reign over the Tackle Warehouse hiding out in my garage. He only throws jitterbugs, regardless of the conditions, and he always catches them. Drives me bonkers. I used them when I first got into topwater like 10 years ago but haven't thrown for a number of years...maybe I change that this year.

One of my go to iconic lures from back 25+ years ago when I started fishing would have to be an inline spinner. I originally threw the south bend lures, now i throw Mepps and the rooster tail. They catch every fish that swims with a simple steady retrieve .

I bought the "baby torpedo" in a different color.  Where can you find the Heddon Sonic?  I've looked at cabelas and academy with no luck.
