Timmy Horton and several other Elite level pros are starting a new tackle company. Baits will be designed by the pros (a common theme nowadays) but the difference is that they will offer a DIRECT price from the factory, bypassing wholesale markup. This idea kinda makes me scratch my head and wonder how they're gonna accomplish this and still be profitable. Unless their baits WOULD retail for $20, and they can sell direct for $10-$15.
Anyway, interesting stuff. Stay tuned!
if you sell baits or anythign direct from the manufacturer you can still make plenty of money at wholesale prices otherwise they would be out of business. The retail store makes the money on the mark up from wholesale to retail. Kind of like car dealerships still make money on a car sold at "invoice" but the salesman doesn't unless there is a spiff or soemthing else going on.
When i worked in the outdoor retail industry we would get pro deals from every company which was usually wholesale minus 30% aka what it cost them to produce the product.
X2 I miss those pro deals. On 1/3/2014 at 12:31 AM, flyfisher said:if you sell baits or anythign direct from the manufacturer you can still make plenty of money at wholesale prices otherwise they would be out of business. Maybe they invested in their venture?

Maybe... The company will have needs for hardbaits, skirted and soft baits. I DOUBT they have, or are willing to raise, the capital for building a factory... therefor, I assume that they will have a need for other manufacturers to make the baits for them.

I believe it would be beneficial for the baits to have the Pros name on them, you know how us fisherman are, LOL. For that reason alone I would think they would want involvement, but who knows.
This will definitely be interesting. The first thing I thought of is their sponsors as well.
The baits are the key. Can't wait to see what they offer and how they will differentiate them from their sponsors..
Good for them. I know hard baits are a different story but look at what john crews has been able to do. His missle baits company now has a following, pro staff and has shown continued expansion of baits. Furthermore, he is his own title sponsor and soft plastic sponsor.
Several pros have been able to start their own rod companies as well. I look at it like this, if companies are going to make money off pro designed lures, rods etc then why shouldn't the pros just do exactly what these guys are doing and create and sell them themselves?
Startup costs may be tough but just like rods, I'm sure they can find a factory or company which can produce what they need.
Its like Avon, Mary K, thirty one, pampered chef and so on for men the way I understand it...
They'll have backing from an un-named, established company. The whole point of the business is to make money and both the pro and the "silent partner" will do just that.
It's better to make 10% of something than 100% of nothing.
Gotta give Boyd duckett credit....that guy knows how to branch out. I mean he has his hand in what seems like is every new business venture involving the pros lol. MLF, Rods/reels and now this..

Instead of the Mary Kay pink cadillac we could get a Pink Bass Boat ?!
Instead of "parties," they should have little tournaments.

They're going to have "fishermen" sell the baits to other fishermen.

There already is a pro with a pink boat
The brand is called profound outdoors and Timmy Horton is the creator of it. I do look forward to seeing what is released and if they don't mark up the baits like other companies you can bet if they're good baits then my boat will be full of them. Goodbye lucky craft, spro, megabass, sebile etc.
The bait company part sounds great. The distribution method sounds horrible. Supposedly the site is launching tomorrow so it will be interesting to see how they present it. If it is no minimum order and geared towards the end user I would be pleasantly surprised. If it is geared towards getting people to buy a briefcase of gear and hawk it at the docks I imagine it will be a short lived venture. Some ideas are better left in the 70's.
Maybe I'll push my local tackle shop to look at getting their lures from them. Their markups now are a bit hefty and their selection is mediocre.
Having a pros name attatched to a product isnt really a driving force behind my purchases could actually be a hindrance. Dont have a clue who Timmy Horton is.

I am such a proud husband.... I got home from work and my wife actually told me about this because she saw a post on Facebook about it (I liked TImmy Horton's page).... married a good 'un!
Meh.. Looking at what is available now, and the prices... 9$ for 2 jigs? Nah, I'm good.

Thank heavens...I was worried there weren't enough tackle companies out there.

thought the same thing. you get almost 3 jigs for that price from Sieberts Outdoors that are probably of the same, if not better, quality.
Online sales, and eliminating or reducing middlemen is the current trend in retail. What they should do is license the KVD name and count their money. I'm sure guys would buy KVD doggie poop...

I splurged for one of those $9 tungsten Jackall jigs think I might be afraid to use it though.
Prices aren't that great, but I like the option of a 25 pack of jigs.

I dont think that they want you to buy at list price. Part of their business plan is that you can "join their team" and get "team pricing" on all products. In other words you can get factory direct pricing, what exactly I don't know. However, it would seem like their is a catch: $10 monthly fee, $25 annual fee and your SSN......
Considering that their website just opened and they probably haven't shipped their first order yet, but they're stating that their "world class products" are "taking the fishing world by storm", it sounds like a bunch of bull. I'll pass. But good luck.
Yeah, give it one year maybe. Depends on how deep their pockets are to support an outdated and shady business model, but my guess is since their "launch" is sporting such a nice selection of only jigs they are not too deep.

Place an order with a site sponsor. I order 50 at a time and can always get the order filled.

I wonder how the spinnerbaits hold? I also wonder how much? Hearing 2 jigs for $9 sounds crazy.

I know ... But with Mary Kay cosmetics once you earn enough revenue selling their product you earn your Pink Caddy. I was just joking about the same with this company. We can all have a pink boat if we sell enough product. LOL

Wow ... just went on the site and I am in awe of the prices. The markup you would need to make to sell these yourself makes them more expensive than the retail IMO.
No thank you! I will skip this too.
I guess I am a little optimistic, unfortunately all they sell right now is jigs and jig heads, I make my own jigs but maybe I will give them a try. 9 bucks for two jigs is not too crazy mop jigs were pretty close to that. I am looking forward to seeing what this company will come up with.

If only these were mop jigs. I can get wire tied jigs from Siebert for $3 each. If I buy the 25 pack from this site, I'm paying 3.32 each. On a single jig, which would I pay 50% more to buy from here? Their "team pricing" better be good.
I can get Mop jigs from Siebert for $3.70 each too. $3.95 with the best hooks.
Looks like a really dumb idea. The stuff is expensive, the business model is terrible and it's just going to tick off all their sponsors
IDK..... But it seems really goofy to me , there are lots and lots of awesome jig makers....and maybe Iam wrong but the term flop comes to mind...currently I am out and sorta dismayed by this presentation
This will be geared more too selling stuff to novice anglers/newbies.celebrity anglers =big sellers. Like taylor swift is to (fake) country music.i dont buy anything with a persons pic on it ,90% do and 10% throw out % like i just did lol
from timmy horton? i dont think I want anything designed by him...

Do you think the market is that big? I don't follow the sponsors the pros have. When I make a lure purchase, it's off the recommendation of a friend, recommendation from a fishing forum, or new technology from an old manufacturer. I know the winning lure from the "Classic" tends to sell out shortly afterwards, but doesn't seem to keep the same status no matter who throws it. Personally I think it's just a handful of guys trying to make a buck. They're not designers, they're not engineers, they're fishermen. What they are doing now is no different than what they do for their current sponsors except eliminating the middleman
