Cabelas 2025

fishing user avatarjenga reply :

I hate cabelas, I recently got a 100 dollar gift card from my point rewards on my credit card and wanted to buy a few things from cabelas yesterday. I went to order two things a new spinning reel and a fto crankbait box. they preceded to tell me that the Fto tacklebox was on back order but couldnt tell me when they would receive them. So I decided to change my order to get some Strike King pro model cranks but they told me that they didnt have any in stock. So I said ok, Ill just take my spinning reel. I went through the whole process and when He told me the price I was really shocked. the cost of the reel was 79.99 but with shipping and tax I had to pay 116. I said that can't be right how much was shipping. He said 12 dollars, then I preceded to ask what the tax rate was and he said 16 percent. I blew up, I said Michigan tax is 6 percent. After all that we figured it out then I went to pay, the guy said he couldnt recognize my gift card and that he would have to transfer me over to management. I said ok then he came back and said that management wasnt there and I would have to call back again on monday. I was ticked, I was on the phone for an hour. I don't understand why they would send me a spring fishing catalog and advertise certain things but not carry all the things in the catalog. This has happened to me to many times and I will never buy anything from that store ever again. Sorry for the rant but I had to get this off my chest.

While I can't say I will never buy anything from them ever again, similar, though not quite so bad, experiences have put Cabela's well down my list of places to buy tackle.

fishing user avatargrimlin reply :

This is why I just go in person.....

Can't blame you for being a bit mad though.

fishing user avatarjdw174 reply :

Couple of months ago I was going to order a spool of hi-vis PowerPro from them (only place I could find it).  When I went to check out, the cost of their shipping was almost equal to the price of the line itself :) .  Needless to say, the order was cancelled.

fishing user avatarVinny Chase reply :

I have had similar experiences with online orders being shipped late and with stuff missing multiple times. If it wasn't for the fact that I live 5 minutes from a Cabelas, I would not shop there very often.

fishing user avatarjenga reply :

Hey Grimlin, I even called the one in Michigan to see if they had it and they didn't.  They also checked to see if there was any store in america that carried it.  No one had the tacklebox.  plus it is a 3 hr drive for me to go to the one in MI.

fishing user avatarGrey Wolf reply :

Man that's tough.

fishing user avatarBuzbait88 reply :

Thats to bad.  Send me the 100$ gift card and I will use it and save you the hassle of having to deal with them.  ;D

fishing user avatardeep reply :

I pretty much stopped buying stuff from BPS and Cabelas because of the sales tax and the S/H charges.

fishing user avatarChiCityBasser reply :

Alot of the items in the Spring Cabelas catalog and the BPS catalog aren't in stock yet. As one of the salesman explained the new items probably won't hit the store til late march. Sale items go quickly if its a good deal and from my experience even if its still listed on the site it doesn't mean they have it in the inventory of that particular store or any warehouse. Luckily I'm only 10 min from the Hammond Cabelas so I can just order and have the items sent to the store without the shipping charges. I understand your frustration but I haven't had any problems with Cabelas.

fishing user avatarQuillback reply :

The high shipping charges at Cabelas and BPS is the reason I will buy my stuff from sites that will give you free shipping on orders over $50.  I only buy from Cabelas or BPS if it is something I have to have and can't find it anywhere else.

+1

Cabelas in particular is ridiculous on shipping charges. Every other on-line place I buy tackle from offers reasonable flat rate shipping on smaller items/orders. I bought 8 XCalibur lipless cranks yesterday and paid less than $5 flat rate shippiong on the whole lot, I'd hate to see what shipping on the same order would have been from Cabelas or Bass Pro.

I noticed your in Chicago, are you shopping the gurnee store? thats the one i work at and most of the new lures are in now and the JM series II just came in. Most everything new will be in by the classic starting feb 25...

That sucks. I'm only about 35-40 minutes away. I don't go very often, but when I do I make it a trip.

I have the luxury of living 20 minutes from the Bass Pro in Bolingbrook.  I browse the online catalog and look for things to buy.  If I get to the store and do not find what I want, I buy something else.   :)  There is never a shortage of things I want from that store.

Yes I do shop the Gurnee store during Classic time but live far south so I hit the portage store or the bolingbrook store as well. Couple years ago I made the trip from Chicago to Gurnee for a reel my brother wanted. The store was out of stock and drove him to the Portage store which was also out of stock. Then drove him to the Bolingbrook store which only had the display model. He got his reel though  :)

I have a Cabela's near by, but I buy my gear from BPS online. BPS has a much better stock of items and I have yet to be told anything I've ordered would be a back order.

fishing user avatar1inStripes reply :

Backorders happen at any store.  Online or in person.  Its life, deal with it.

fishing user avatarjenga reply :

I understand stores sometimes have back orders.  What I don't understand is every year I try to order something for Cabelas they don't have the stuff they are advertising in their catalog.  Then when I do order they tax shipping and handling.  For example. if I buy a 79.99 reel and shipping is 12 dollars then I get taxed on 91.99.  I think that is BS.

Aren't you glad that you don't really have to buy from them , there are sooooo many other quality tackle sites to select from.

Then buy elsewhere if you think it is BS.  Many things, like fishing equipment, car electronics, and other items come out with new equipment in February and March.  A company may mail out catalogs with information on those items  for their first catalog of the year which they want in peoples hands as close to the time it is being released as possible.  Sometimes manufacturers cant get it done in the time they expect to which causes problems for the stores.  Everyone goes through it.  Generally your higher selling stores are still going to get that stuff before anyone else.  ie Bass Pro, Cabelas.

As for their taxing info, that surprises me some.  I don't know why they tax shipping, of if they do.  There is not a Cabelas in my state, so I don't believe they collect tax from me.

This is true of the new catalog items as explained to me by the Cabelas staff. They don't get the new things from the catalog in til usually the end of Feb or middle of March. Sometimes they get some things in sooner but most times its later. The Hammond Cabelas has the new Abu Veritas in but only had a few. They also had the W&M Skeet Reese rods in but only a few. They had none of the New Cabelas rods in yet or new lures and things. Only a matter of time though...

I only buy my hiking boots at Cabelas as I can't get them elsewhere.

I visited the Hamburg store a few weeks back. It is about a 2.5 hour ride. I carefully walked through every aisle in the fishing dept. They only had a few items on sale.

Also, the store was very busy and understaffed. I had to wait 20-30 minutes just to try on a pair of sunglasses. I wrote a letter to Cabelas expressing my disappointment and did not get a response, not even a form letter.

fishing user avatartriglet reply :

I've never ordered from cabelas.. however i am fed up with bps shipping.  takes forever for me to get the things i order.  usually takes close to 6 business days.  I ordered 2 scopes from gander mountain this year.  Searched online and found a 20 dollar off coupon and both scopes shipped the day i ordered them and were here in 2 business days.  They have definately earned my business.  P.S.  think shipping was only 5 bucks both times ;D of course it was a special on shipping but hey im cheap like that!
