Beetlespins good for bass? 2025

I use a lure called "Redfish Magic", its basically a beetlespin with a minnow instead of a beetle. I pull it over the tops of submerged grass or holes in the grass. Its works very well for me.

Yes they do catch Bass, Rock Bass that is.
Beetle Spins are panfish magic. I have caught some dink Smallmouth on them as well.

I fished a senko the other day for an hour, nothing. Threw on a beetlespin. Hooked a yellow perch on my first cast.
Ive caught yellow perch and chain pickerel with them, never bass.

A Beetlespin has the potential to catch pretty much anything that swims. When I was younger it was my "don't get skunked" bait. If the day was tough I would throw one for the last hour before I had to go. I have caught bass (every local species), crappie, bream, pickeral, goggle eye (rock bass or warmouth), catfish, drum, and even a bullfrog. I didn't always catch bass, but almost never got skunked.

Beetle Spins are like crack to small bass. My buddy has a pond full of tiny bass and big bream. I'll tie on a tandem rig of a Beetle Spin in the rear and tie a crappie jig, usually a red/white tube jig, on a loop in front. That does a really good job with both species. The bream will go for the crappie jig and both will go for the Beetle. I'm trying to catch a double of course.

If you cast a beetlespin where there are active bass, you will catch them.

Dink magnet but my favorite lure for spawning slab crappie! I use a 2” Grub in lieu of the split tail

Beetle Spins catch the heck out of bass . They use to make one larger than the 1/4 ounce and it was a fish catcher for sure . I caught a 6 lber on it .

Beetle spins work great in pounds, I have caught a lot of bass (along with crappie) from ponds. In big bodies of water I really never used it. Don't know why but it is more a pond lure for me.

My son and I have both caught a lot of LMB on beetlespins the past few years, but none of them over 2 pounds. Still, when the big ones aren't biting it's fun to throw.

I use to fish a lake in east Texas and when the bite was slow I’d tie on a 1/4oz. Purple Beetle Spin and have a great time tossing it along the edges of Lilly pad fields. We'd catch Bass and Crappie until we were tired of catching them.

Not exactly a Beetle spin, but a 2" tube on 1/16oz jighead with a #1 jig spinner arm use to be a bait I fished a lot to catch whatever would bite and I caught a lot of bass on it, some really nice ones too.

Beetle Spins work great, probably the other end of the spectrum from the giant swim bait craze over the last several years. There, one occasionally catches a small bass on a giant bait . . . just like on the other "small" end of the size continuum where a large bass will jump on a tiny bait.
Although I'm in the camp that thinks bass and most fish have tiny brains with tiny thought capabilities, they do seem to know something about sort of matching what is available to them size-wise. So small bass don't generally take as many swings at slow moving large swim baits and large lazier bass don't waste energy chasing small moving baits.
I have to tell you I struggle with this a bit since animals live in the moment, don't have access to mirrors to even know how big they are relative to their food sources, how do they know? My guess is a 6" bass that takes a swipe at some large dinner passing by, like another 6" bass, figures out via trial and error that it is a waste of time and energy. There is some situational conditioning going on.
*Bluegills have very small mouths, need really small hooks and plastics. Green sunfish, and several other pan fish, have much larger mouths, likely can grab on to Beetle Spins, small Mepps, etc. much easier.
I love carrying along a few "skunk proof" lures!

The only reason I dont use Beetle Spins much anymore is they snag easily , nothing to do with their fish catching abilities . I dont use those tiny ones either .

They brought it back as salt water beetle spin with 3" body, also Betts makes one this this size too.

They get snagged as much as any exposed hook bait does.
Thank goodness they only cost 82 cents at Walmart!

True. I was thinking more of a Ned rig type bait which is what the grub body and jighead sort of resemble.
