This is pretty good 8)
Glenn, I asked a question about Senkos a day earlier and received no answers. When I rig a Senko with a small thin glass rattle, do you (or anyone else) think it changes the designed motion o the Senko on the fall? Irishrover.
That was posted just a few hours ago. Patience young Jedi, patience. ;D
All, please post your questions separately. This thread is not for new questions. It's simply a directory of other posts.
Thanks!
thanka alot glenn, now i can get all the info i need whenever i want. thanks a million
The Senkos in my tacklebox are kissing their wives good-bye
Its funny with my first year of having success with using senko type baits. For some reason I thought i had the holy grail of bass fishing when i has so much success when the weather changed from spring to summer. Every senkos I wacky rigged on a carolina setup and twitched I caught fish. For some reason my success has slowed down and i'm not sure why? I'm not sure if they picked up and learned my presentation/bait or my scents. But the fish did learn something from me because they have backed off from the senko's. Remember I fish the same three places everyday, i'm in the same spot. Well Its time to read and learn for next season i guess. I'm going to try harder next year. No question here its about staying focused and motivated and not giving up.
I hear and read lot of Daiici hooks, but I heven't seen them. Whot do you think abouth this hooks?
I use Gamakatsu and Illex worm hooks and I'm satisfied with them!
We used the daiici octropus hooks for wacky rigging senkos this year, they were a bit cheaper and worked just fine. No complaints. We used them in red.
I just noticed last night however, that BPS is now making a red octopus up to a size 2/0 and they are $3.99 for 20 so I ordered up a couple boxes.
OK! Than i'll stay with Gamakatsu and illex.
Very helpfull post! Thank you!
That was extremely helpful. Thanks a-lot.
Good thing I found this link, I was litteraly just about to make a post about senkos. yes I know there have been a lot of them, but I had a question burning into the back of my head. Glad I found this link to save everyone a bunch of trouble!
Nice information on senkoes. I use them primarily and they have worked for me. My personal best bass was caught on a green speck senko.
BigBill i was just reading ur response to the post about the fish slowing on a the bite on Senkos , its not that are onto you as u suspect but there are different moods and weather conditions that affect the fish and as u know there are actually 2 type of baits used in fishing 1) is a vertical presentation this includes all plastics, tubes, jigs , senkos ect. and 2) horizontal presentation baits these include you spinnerbaits , crankbaits, buzzbaits ect. if the fish are slow on the bite with the plastics and the vertical presented baits just switch to your horizontals and have a gr8 time
My #1 thread on this forum to date.
Great help thanks.
Ahh thank you Glenn!
I knew nothing about Senkos, looks like I need to pick up a few!
I never believed a bass would grab one of these things until I tried one. Wow!
Man what a resource. Thanks Glenn.
Apparently I had missed this. Now I know why my senko thread was locked. This topic has been beat to death!
Glenn, I just got on this site a few days ago and already heard that you are a legend here. haha

A question about the senko color junebug. Did the change the name to purple w/emerald flake? Cause everyone I go that's all I see and when went to Dick's the upc match the junebugs?? I'm just wondering and curious.
Glad I came across this...tons of great info here..
thanks, appreciate the info!!!

Hey man, try rigging a senko seedless style on a 4/0 gamakatsu weighted hook. Let it sink and then add a quick twitch or two with the tip of your rod. This makes the senko dance and grab their attention then it falls. After twitching, slowly reel up only your slack and pause, a lot of times the bass will sneak up on it and wait till it is down for the count, then, with my experience, they tear it up. When you catch one, cast te se plase on the next cast. I too fish the same three spots every day and this is my go to bait. I have fished many days and caught 15-20 bass over 1.5lbs within 2-3houra using this method. Also, Strike king green pumpkin with black specks seem to work just as good but holdup to the harshness of the fish bites so I don't have to change baits as often, the yammamoto's seem to tear up and render unusable after 2 catches max.
Hope this helps, tight lines to you all.
Sorry, I meant to say "weedless" style, not seedless, this darn auto correction on the iPhone messes with me sometimes.
VERY NICE!! Senko's are a staple in my boat! Don't leave the dock without 30 or so colors, love the fact that there is always something to learn about this versatile bait. There are many brands out there but Gary Yamamoto is by far head and shoulders above the competition.
What a great resource on senkos. I have only been fishing for about a year intensely and have NEVER tried a senko. That will change the next trip out! Glenn, thank you so much for the links!
Senko fishing, I rig it on a 1/8oz brass weighted carolina rig with a clicker brass ball next to the weight. Then i put the hook in the center of the senko type bait. One point which is my best advise you'll ever get out of me is make sure your hook is big enough. I even go a tad larger on the hook to besafe. I also use the eagle claw weedless hooks too.
I lost a new state record due to the hook not large enough in my BPS 7 1/4'' stick o worm....
Try senko's if you never tried one yet. I use them in channels parallel to weedlines. So many different presentations too.
Anybody ever tried the senko on a mojo rig?
Or a carolina rig? I have only fished them weightless, small weight tex rig, and wacky rig.
Man I love using senkos at dick's sporting goods they have buy 3 get 1 free I took advantage of that couple days ago
I do love using the senkos but hate the price and how easily they tear or fall off while boating a fish...
Want to thank BR. Wanted to get into fishing senkos had no clue how or why. This thread taught me how and today I caught my first two bass on senkos. Small little guys but definitely put the confidence I needed in the lure. Thanks again
I have never used Senkos but I guess I need to try em out one of these days!
I am brand new to this forum. So I will try not to be saying much. I do a lot of fishing with sinking baits. I balance the sink rate on worms from 12 inches down to small crappie jigs. I have been at this for I would guess at least 40 years. I have found that how fast or slow something drops through the water can make a big difference. You just got together out there and spend a lot of time experimenting when things do not work. I feel this is a whole system of fishing.
This is the most useful thread I have ever read on the internet! Thanks all
So I have had success with Texas Rigging the Senko, not sure what took me so long to bass fish with plastics....
I want to try and Wacky Rig this weekend and need advice as I will be going to Wal-Mart tonight to gear up
For Hooks: Brand, Type, Size, and color?.....research says 1/0 or 2/0 red Gamakatsu Octopus but I will take any and all suggestions, plan on fishing with 5" Gary Senko and 5" Yumdingers
For Worms/Senko: late August Northern WI color suggestions?
Thank you in advance.
I use 1/0 and 2/0 Gamakatsu weedless finesse wide gap hooks for wacky rigging my Senkos.

Wacky rigging:
Best hooks (IMO): Gamakatsu Wide Gap Finesse (not carried by Walmart AFAIK). I use sizes from 2/0 down to 4. No worries with smaller hooks, hook-up ratio is excellent.
For 5" senkos I'd personally go no lower than size 1... I normally use a 1, 1/0 with 5"ers.
Don't know about colors in your neck of the woods, but natural colors tend to work best in these parts. Watermelon Magic, Green Pumpkin, etc.
thnak you for this thread, very informative. got lots of reading done and knowledge going in my head.
I agree with Bill, I fish farm ponds and would always wacky rig my senkos, I caught 25 fish one evening on the senko. But now, the bass dont even acknowledge them it seems, I've tried them weightless carolina rigged and everything in between...
This thread was very informative. I fish from the bank exclusively, typically in small community lakes in local parks. I have been learning to fish a Texas rig and have been using a weightless 4-inch Senko. My last time out I caught nine bass, my best day yet. Not sure what it is about the Senko, but it seems to have the "it" factor that is tough to describe. Whatever it is, it works on the bass in my neck of the woods.
If you want additional ways to rig them check these out:

glad I found this, I had a lot questions about senko's but you have cleared everything up.
When do you guys throw wacky? I have confidence in t-rigging, so I always start there. Are there certain conditions you look for when you decide to throw a wacky rig? Or do you just mix it up when nothing else is working?

With a senko, I wacky rig it 99% of the time. For me, T-rigging is reserved for ribbontails, lizards and creatures/craws or really anything other than a senko lol.

Same for me!
Y'all are missing out if you never throw senkos or finesse worms t-rigged, weightless.
I like fishin' a SANKO.
Well, after today, I am firmly on the Senko bandwagon. These were not around when I was last fishing regularly late '80s-mid '90s). I've been looking for a good small pond (for bank fishing) near my house for about a year, and I finally found one. The first day was just a couple hours of throwing spinners and crankbaits to get an idea of the pond. Nothing. About 20 minutes of weighted Senko and tube fishing also produced nothing. Oh well.
Today I hit the same pond, only this time early in the AM and fished an unweighted purple Senko Texas rigged, and had a bass on 4 of my first 10 casts. I left my good casting setups at home and used a light spinning outfit with 6 lb line. Of course my hook sets were atrocious but that's another story. No hogs, but after about 2 hours I had caught and released about 5 1-pounders. A pumpkinseed Senko-ish plastic also produced a few small ones. Again, crankbaits and spinnerbaits produced nothing.
My only complaint is I went through quite a few baits this morning. Tomorrow I'm going to throw a few different tubes and see how that goes, but I hate to say it - for today, Senkos matched the hype.
VG
I've been having a lot of luck with color 330 lately. Unfortunately, I only could buy one bag cause that's all that was left.
I just started fishing and senkos have caught most of the fish I've caught along with spinnerbait and a bunch of other plastics. But senkos have caught me a 6lber and a 5.3 lb. In. Two months of fishing I've caught hundreds of fish with them. All I know is they work.
The Secret To Not Losing So Many Senkos - Here's The Solution
So I've gone through about 11 packs of Senkos this year with the help of my brother and friends. At about $7.99 a bag that's $87.95 in Senkos and 110 indivual Senkos. I've found that Walmart has them cheapest standard price which is $6.99 and that sometimes Dick's Sporting Goods has them on sale for buy 1 get one 1/2 off.
Either way, it adds up. So, I tried some tips from here on how to save some Senkos. I've tried the O-Ring with O-Wacky tool, surgical tubing, Zip ties, heated shrink tubing, O-Rings crossed over each other, different types of hooks including Skip Jack Hooks, and Finesse Wide Gap Hooks, and others. Nothing really worked.
Sometimes you'd make your first cast with a Senko and see it launched off into space, or you'd land on a dock and recover your hook but the Senko was still on the dock. It was extremely frustrating and expensive, although I'm sure that Gary Yamamoto would couldn't be more pleased.
UPDATED:
Well, I finally found a solution and it is a cheap one. I didn't come up with the zip tie idea nor the vinyl tubing idea. "thebig1" is the one who showed me the tubing idea....and to give credit where it is due, I know someone else said something about it before in another thread. I've tried it on 5 trips now with other people also using it and it's worked extremely well. It's a combination of a 5" Senko, Gamakatsu 1/0 Offset Shank Worm EWG hook, and 1 small 1" inch piece of vinyl 3/8" inside diameter-1/2" outside diameter tubing (the kind you get at Menards or aquarium tubing). I've found that anything less a 1" inch piece of vinyl tubing doesn't seem to work nearly as well.
After making this thread the "thebig1" posted that vinyl tubing works better and that he's had the same Senko for 8-9 years. Well, I tried his method for 2 trips on my own and then a guys fishing weekend. We all used 5" Senko's with the vinyl tubing and worked even better than the method I had tried before with the zip ties. We caught 94 fish over the weekend, bass, northern, sunnies, rock bass, and perch and did not lose 1 Senko. I still have the Senko from that trip.
All of the components: 1 Senko, 1 piece of vinyl tubing cut 1/2", and 1 hook of your choice.
And the other secret....buy Senkos in bulk! lol. From some helpful posters on bassresource.com I learned that you can buy Senkos in bulk 100 packs for $54.82 at Tackle Warehouse during one of their 15% sales and get them for $46.58 which makes them $46 cents apiece versus the normal $79 cents apiece. The only sad part is that I had to order them in green pumpkin, my favorite color is cinnamon brown. The 3/8" inch vinyl tubing cost $2.86 for 10 feet. Enough to last a lifetime.
Now that the "thebig1" showed me how well vinyl tubing works, I don't know what I'm going to do with 100 Senkos. I bagged them up into 7 original packages. I already gave away a pack to my friend. So that leaves me with 6 packages left. At the rate I lose Senko's with the vinyl tubing I guess I will be giving the other bags to friends and just keep 1 or 2 for myself. Thanks "thebig1"!!!!
I've come to the acceptance that Senkos are like livebait and gas, you buy them and to get used up. It's just life (Unlike a lifetime lure like a KVD Sexy Dawg, that as long as you don't lose, you can just keep sharpening the hooks or replace the hooks and have the lure for nearly forever.)
I hope this helps some of you save some cash. Good luck and good fishin'. Try it out, it's only a $2.86 gamble and I bet you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.
That is a lot of tips to rig a senko!!!

Glenn - Thanks for consolidating the "Best of Bass Resource" content. As I mentioned in another post, I caught my first bass on a football jig last week. Earlier today I decided to commit to correctly fishing w/ the Senko and caught my biggest fish to date.
On 4/12/2014 at 2:52 AM, gallowaypt said:Y'all are missing out if you never throw senkos or finesse worms t-rigged, weightless.
I agree. Conditions were horrible yesterday when I decided to get my line wet over lunch break. It was over 90 degrees and the water was extremely muddy. I decided to commit to a weightless t-rigged Senko after reading another post on Bass Resource.
I threw out a purple/black 5'. Cast. Let drop to bottom w/ slack. Slowly retrieve with rod tip by pulling lifting up every 4 -6 ft, let sink to bottom, then lift rod tip.
I caught the fish pasted below in less than a dozen casts. My cheap digital scale said he was a little over 3lbs.
Note - I also pulled the tip of the Senko over the eye of the hook and had no issue with moss/grass.
Looks like I'm gona be doing some reading
