symetre or president 2025

fishing user avatarjoshmb1999 reply :

I just bought my first avid today and am super excited.  Now I want to pair a reel up with it and I have narrowed it down to the shimano symetre or the pflueger president.  Should I pay the extra money for the symetre or will I just be paying for the shimano name?  What does everybody think?

fishing user avatarguest reply :

The Shimano name does bring a lot of quality with it. I am a fan of the Pflueger President, having used both reels( Got a symetre from RW) i still prefer the President. 70 bucks, great drag, strong reels and I like the feel of it better. I use it on a Fenwick 6'6"Med Action rod. I use the 6735 size with 8# Cableas Proline. It is my favorite spinnning outfit. 8-)

fishing user avatarsenile1 reply :

They're both fine reels.  I have a Symetre and it is a quality reel.  Go to the store and hold them in your hands and check them both out.  Pick the one that feels the best to you.

Good idea, but better yet, take your rod to the store with you and try both on your rod.  They are both great reels. Then get the one that best balances your rod. I believe that the Symetre (Have one and love it) in the 2500 size, which I would recommend is still under 10 oz.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

You should be able to find the Symetre on sale right now, so the prices are about the same. I'm sure you will be happy with either reel. As has already been suggested, saddle 'em up with your new rod and decide for yourself.

AND YOU BETTER MAKE SURE SEE DOESN"T SEE THIS POST

fishing user avatarDavid P reply :

Symetre vs President I'd take the president. BUT, if you can find a good deal on a Stradic, it's a nice step up for not much added money.

Both are great reels, and you won't be disappointed either way.

fishing user avatarskillet reply :

Haven't fished the President, have a Symetre on a Berkley Bionix 6'MH that I got on sale for $20 and think I have a combo that can't be beat. Inexpensive and great feel and action :)! Like others have said go to the store and see how both feel...

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

I had a chance to fish a buddy's President for a weekend and it was a fine reel.  I would say that the feel and power are very similar to the Symetre.  My personal preference would be the Symetre though.  I just get the feeling that is a better made reel.  But I don't think you could go wrong with either one.

On a side note, I was able to pick up a Shimano Stradic 2500 for $75. This a great buy in the price range you are looking at and it would be a nice step up from the two reels you're looking at.

fishing user avatarPopeye reply :

Shimano has a great reputation, but when I bought all my new stuff for retirement, I opted for Pflueger products in the spinning reel department (Supreme, President, and Trion:o) I also bought an Okuma MD 30 and MDS 30 for my two cheaper Fenwick Venture rods. I read every review I could find on the net and the Pflueger reels were highly reguarded. I hope to get some fishing done here in So. Ca before too long. I simply can NOT wait until next June when I retire and go back to Indiana/Illinois.

where did you find the stradic at such a great price?

fishing user avatarguest reply :

They are on sale all around, Shimano has updated their line for 08, they are discounting the older modles. But I still would go with a President ::)

I have the same size president. 6735.

I have it on my as68mxf Avid. Been pretty happy with it so far. Very smooth.

I do not have any experience with the Shimano line at all so I can't comment on it.

]I was at Cablea's in Hamburg PA , about 3 weeks ago they had them fo 80 bucks on sale and Dicks in Wilkes Barre had them at the same, but not til you went to the check out. BPS and Cabelas run a lot of deep discounts between the end of Christmas and Spring, you may want to wait until you see what they do on line.

The Symetre wasn't redesigned. The old Stradic was discounted.

fishing user avatarguest reply :

Sorry I knew it was something like that. They had 2 differnt colors , whats up with that? I don't fish Shimano so I dont know what model is which. The Grey Reels were on sale and they had Blue reels, that were full price.

fishing user avatarguest reply :

I've said it before, and I reckon I'll say I'll say it again,

IMPO the Symetre is the most underrated spinning reel on the market......bar none.

and this from a die hard Daiwa guy who uses a Steez.

I'm looking at the Symetre as well.  It seems everyone sells them for the same price ($79.99).  Is this the sale price or will they get cheaper soon?

fishing user avatarburleytog reply :

$80 is the going price for a Symetre and I've never seen it cheaper.

x2

always $79.99 everywhere you look, never seen it cheaper.

The only Shimano sales I've seen are on models they are re-designing such as the Stradic.

The only other sale option I've seen is via a BPS combo and then it is prob just because of the rod sale.

fishing user avatarguest reply :

Hey Fellas The Reel that was discounted is the STRADIC, I spoke out of turn. They gray looking reel, like the one RW gave me.Went to Cabelas yesterday ( talked management into getting some staff gifts from there!) and went to the fella I know, He said no I was confusing the 2 reels, thats why I said the were on sale. Sorry for adding to the confusion. ILL STICK WITH PFLUEGER threads in the future. ::)

You should've kept that Stradic Muddy. You could have worn the Shimano posse badge and the spurs with the Dodgers cap. You would've topped it all off with the Pflueger Mook shirt. Oh what a sight it could've been!

fishing user avatarguest reply :

It is on Elaine's  St. Croix rod which hasn't seen the water in a while :-/
