Anyone have any experience with cabela's whuppin stick casting rods? Do you think the 7' medium power moderate action rod would work for crankbaits? They're on sale for only $20, and are often on sale for even less.
MM sounds like a cranking rod to me.At 20 bucks I would just buy it.
Has anyone used them?
I have 2 of them I use for catfish. As long as you don't mind the weight they're serviceable rods. You might have to go to a MH/M because the tips are so soft.

Thanks, would the medium heavy be better for smaller cranks like bandit 100s to?
If that's what you're mainly planning on using , you'll be okay with the MM, much bigger and I think you'll be better served with the MH.

Thanks, I was planning on using it for a general purpose cranking rod, so I would be throwing everything between big o's and bandit 100's to kvd 2.5's and little n's. I wouldn't be using it for deep cranks much, mostly just shallow and mid depth divers. Would you go with the medium or the medium heavy for those?
MH
MH for those baits
Thanks for the reply's! Should I go with the 6'6" medium heavy moderate version or the 9' medium heavy moderate? They don't have anything in between those lengths in the medium heavy power.
9' would be very unwieldy to me so I'd use the 6' 6".
I'm taking a ride out there tomorrow to see what's left.
Just went in Cabelas to check these out.I didn't realize it was a 2 piece. It felt heavy and I just didn't like how it felt in my hands.

Thanks, unfortunately that's what I've heard about the whuppin sticks more than once. Do you have any other suggestions for crankbaits rods in that same price range? Otherwise I'm probably going to get the 6'6" medium heavy moderate whuppin stick.

Not for 20 bucks
I stand corrected
I have the equivalent Ugly Stik and I wouldn't want to whip that heavy, limber rod all day long. I have it mated to a 6500C Ambassadeur reel with the idea that it's a good catfish or striper live bait setup, but I've never used it for that.

I just looked that rod up on their site and reviews are good. Now I'm considering one for my new "spare" topwater combo. I always keep a spare rod or reel or a mismatched combo so i can justify a new reel or rod.
Bluebasser what reel seat is on these twist or hooded

That sounds great, but unfortuanately they're out of stock. Does anyone know if they are discontinued or will they be restocked? If they come back in stock in the next month or two I am definitely going to get one, they look to be a little lighter and higher quality than the whuppin stick for even less. Plus they're a little longer which is an added bonus. If they don't come back in stock I'll probably get the 6'6" mh whuppin stick.

Haha yep! "But honey that reel won't work right with that rod" Excuse to build 2 new setups

Cha-ching! Plus I have 2 Lightning Rods that the foregrip cork is breaking off of.
Academy also has the Jarvis walker white tuff tip 7' casting rod that's labeled medium moderate and says it's a composite, is that rating accurate? I've noticed that academy doesn't always have the correct ratings on their equipment.

Thanks for all of the reply's everyone!
Do you know if its going to be put back in stock, or was it discontinued?

I think it's harder to make a fiberglass rod with a different action at the tip than in the rest of the blank. For that reason, I feel fiberglass rods are usually more moderate through the entire blank than a graphite rod of the same power/action. I know that's no help, and there's no rule about it. It's just how I perceive it to be.

I have no idea. They seemt o have changed the guides on their Eos rods so they might be in the middle of an upgrade. But there's a M saltwater Tournament Choice still on the website for $15.

Thanks, I didn't see the saltwater version at first. I'm going to go ahead and try the 7'5" medium moderate tournament choice rod, thats one of the few models of moderate action tournament. Choice rods they have left
You have to go in the store and see. They had some of ethos on clearance at my store here in Ga.

I wish... There aren't any academy's within a hundred and fifty miles of me. Online just ran out of the 7'5" medium moderate tourney choice, as I was ordering it. Still show that it's in stock but when you go to put it in cart it tells you that its out of stock. I might try the 7' medium moderate premier casting/popping rod, although its double the price, or just get the whuppin stick. Leaning toward the m/m premier popping rod, you don't happen to happen any experience with it do you?
Thanks for all of the help, I didn't think of checking academy until you mentioned it.
No haven't tried the premier. They have 7' ml online (that might be to light tho).

I saw the medium lite model, but I think that would be to lite for cranks.

Looks more like $39.99 to me. Thanks for the heads up (although they are all fast action, a moderate would probably be better for cranks), maybe it will go on sale for even less when they do their spring classic sale.
Have you looked at ffo?

Yeah, I was looking at the warranty info.
I was looking at gander mountain, and noticed they had their advantage casting rods all labeled moderate action, so I think it might work for cranks if the rating is accurate. With the %20 off everything sale going on now, its down to about $32. Has anyone used these rods, and did you like them?
I was thinking of getting the 6'6", 1/4-5/8 ounce rated, moderate acrion model.
