im looking for a braid that works well on small spinning reels. I have tried 20/6 and 15/4 powerpro and got terrible wind knots so im thinking i need something with more body to it. Maybe fireline? What do you guys recommend? The reel is an abu 801
Speaking from personal experience I wouldn't use Fireline on spinning gear. When I tried it, it made a lot of noise through the guides and had a ton of friction. I normally do quite well with spiderwire on my spinning gear (as does my uncle who uses it for just about everything). I also don't like the way fireline transmits bites back, harder to feel than spiderwire in my opinion.
sqhertz...... I have the same problem and imo it's the reel more than the line. I'm using a Pflueger supreme 25 and I get more than my share of wind knots using 10# PP ( no windknots on my supremes 30& 35 with 15# PP). Prior to this reel I used an Abu 101, seldom windknots on this cheepy and used both PP 10# and fireline 10#.
To augment my position on the reel I had a Johnny Morris wide spool with 20# PP, windknot after windknot, returned reel in favor of a Daiwa tierra, put same line on and have yet to have a windknot in 4 months.

Excellent information. Thanks. All my spinning reels are old and spooled with mono. I've been considering trying braid on at least one of them. Now I know that it isn't necessarily me if I get plenty of wind knots. Unfortunately that would mean feeding the Bait Monkey again.
I use power pro on a stradic 1000 and a sahara 750. I'm happy
I use Power Pro 5/1, 8/1 and 10/2 on my Shimano 1000 series reels a lot. I too tried Fireline and wound up throwing it away.
Noise is caused by a combination of the line in guides. For some reason certain combinations make more noise than others.
With that said I would 100% without a question use Spiderwire Ultracast Invisi-Braind for light braid applications or any freshwater spinning reel application. I buy bulk spools of 10lb for must of my bass fishing and use quite a bit of 6lb with a fluorocarbon leader for river fishing. I have found it is supper strong, soft (not stiff), and it's a fused braid so it works well on spinning reels. Fused braids are rounder than traditional braided lines and tend to act more like mono when used on a spinning reel so less tangles and wind knots.
I would also recommend Spiderwire ultra-cast (in any color). Although I don't believe it is a fused braid, it does seem to have a stiffer coating than many other braids and is an eight strand tightly woven line. (six strand in 20 lb or smaller tests)
Casting technique may also be a contributing factor to your problem.
1. Try giving the line coming off the spool a little pull (to keep it tight on the spool) before you begin your retrieve.
2. Use a smooth backcast letting the bait load the rod tip rather than a snapping motion.

im thinking it may be the reel also (i dont have a problem with my 602 with any line i give it) but there has to be a line that works with this one. ive had decent luck with sufix seige but i dont want a mono. 6# cxx was waste of time and money and im not sure how bad the management is with other copolys and small spinning reels.
the thought of a fused braid like sufix fuse crossed my mind but i havnt seen enough reviews about it.
ugh.
I have a Supreme 30 size and a Supreme XT 25 size (thicker bail wire) I use Sufix Performance braid on both with hardly any issues at all.
Sufix is top notch and affordable. They often have a rebate deal going also. I honestly don't understand why more guys who like braid don't use it.
i have been eying the sufix performance braid for a while now , but have settled on powerpro. this may be the time i bite the bullet and pick some up. too bad sufix doesnt have a rebate thing going on now. worst case , it would go on the 602.
picked up a spool of sufix performance tonight. sports authority had some sale on it. $15 for a 150yd spool of 20/6. ill be out tomorrow morning to give it a go.

Give us a thorough feild report if you can please, I too have been eye-balling it, but havent pulled the trigger due to not many reviews.
If you like it, I may go get some 832 since its supposed to be better, right?
ill try. the only other braid i have used is power pro.
the guys over at TT seemed to like it.... http://www.tackletour.com/reviewpremiumbraidrounduppg4.html
I've only used PP also, so Im looking forward to your opinion on it.
I use the suffix performance braid on all of my spinning reels and have never had a problem. Great stuff imo.
The Sufix will be a bit noisy at first, but it breaks in and quiets down quickly.
The 832 looks very interesting. I may have to give it a shot next season.
There are Sufix reviews all over the web. As with reviews on just about anything, some are well written and some are the rantings of lunatics The vast majority of them are positive.
so far, i like it. its very smooth. i only landed a couple mayan cichlids today but here is my mini review of the line.
the coating does give it a bit of memory but it gets better with each cast. it doesnt allow it to be blown around too much by the wind though. i had to use uni/uni knots for the leader because my usual albright slips. power pro likes any line joining knot i tied.
this line is noisy as hell , but that doesnt bother me.
casting distance is similar to powerpro with the same baits and rod. i was using a different reel.
as far as wind knots... eh. its the reel. while i did get far less than i did with power pro, i still did get a few. hopefully that will change when it breaks in some more.
over all , i would recommend it as an alternative to powerpro.
I've had very few issues with 14 lb Fireline on any of my spinning reels. The issues I have had can be attributed to operator error by not manually closing the bail every time.
should have tried the best and forgot the rest.

I thought you didn't care for that Daiwa reel? Must be a pretty decent reel if you haven't had a wind knot with it for 4 months so far.

I don't like the weight, 10.7 oz heavy for a small reel, the drag and smoothness don't compare to my soron 20. For the few wind knots I do get on the Abu the performance totally outshines the Daiwa. Had I never owned a cardinal 800 series or sorons stx I would have thought the Daiwa was good. Both the tierra and soron are not used for bass, under saltwater conditions it's Abu hands down. Always willing to try something different and had not owned a Daiwa in 40 years, so I gave it a shot. I'm not saying it's a bad reel just not as good as the soron.
Quoteshould have tried the best and forgot the rest.
Just one mans opinion.
went out again for 4 hours and primarily fished with the 801 and new line. as its breaking in , im getting more and more knots. my question is , why would a company make a reel as badass as this one , but have it not work with any braided line? : it baffles me. im thinking about emailing abu , just for S&G , to see what they have to say.
sent abu an email and got one back. dodgeguy will love this lol ....
QuoteYou can go up in pound test, if possible, to reduce wind knots....remember that braid diameters are much smaller than nylon/mono lines. Try to match the diameter you are used to using in nylon/mono with the diameter braid you are fishing. ie; 8# nylon/mono is same as 20# Super braid.Another option is to use FireLine. Because it is thermo fused, FireLine is stiffer and has more body than braids making it idea for spinning outfits. It will rarely wind-knot and has the no stretch characteristics of a braid.
Finally, try not to make high arching, "hail-Mary" casts which will cause the line to float in the air. Make snap casts using your wrist (kind of like throwing a baseball or putting vs. a long slow wind up and follow through) This will help reduce wind-knots, too.
i always thought those snap casts were a major factor in wind knots.
Lol he probably only recommended FireLine because ABU and Berkley are all in that large fishing company orgy they call "Pure Fishing" ;D
Lol i'm sure any fused superline will work.

No, line twist is a major factor with wind knots.

duurrr , i totally did not think of that lol. they need to start selling sampler spools with like 60-75 yds of line. im starting to accumulate half spools of braid. :

You mean filler spools? lol
they were talking about fused fireline.i hate fused fireline.i love fireline braid.it also has more body which is why i like it.i also do as they say and use a line the same diameter as the mono i would use.i never get wind knots with fireline braid on my pflueger reels.

nope. all the spools ive seen have 125+ yds of line which is great and all , but i dont use all of it for one reel. if i dont like it , the rest sits there. 60yds would be perfect.
You must be using some small spools then. haha ;D
I used Cabela's Ripcord Si Plus in 2lb dia. on a ultralite and had no problems very smooth line and very limp.
