E6x or Bass X 2024

fishing user avatarCam Young reply :

All my life I have been a St. Croix rod user and have many premier series rods and a legend xtreme (best rod I've ever fished). The bass team that I am on is sponsored by G. Loomis so I will get a great deal on their rods, about half price, and am considering investing in a few E6x rods for my arsenal. However, being a St. Croix guy and having my "brand loyalty" has brought me to look at the bass x rods which would be similar in price to what I could get E6x for.

I'm looking for any thoughts and opinions on bass x vs E6x and I realize this is a very broad question but if you have fished either series I'd love to know about your experience with these rods. I'm really looking at the comparison in quality, sensitivity and comfort.

Thank-you

fishing user avatarNHBull reply :

I have an e6x for CB, SB and jig/worm.  Very happy with them, but don't compare to the GLX.  If you can discount on a GLX, it is money well spent

fishing user avatarCam Young reply :

I get the discount off the full G. Loomis line up. I know I will end up ordering a few G. Loomis rods during my time with the team to test them out and see what I think. However, as I add 5 rods to my arsenal for the summer tournament season, I'm just not sure what I should go with initially. What I know (St. Croix) or what I don't know (G. Loomis).

fishing user avatarNHBull reply :

I am a loomis guy for now and the GLX is what got me there.

Have not fished a better rod.  I am sure others will disagree

I remember I was 15, just starting to purchase decent gear while working on the farm. A friend of dads was showing me how to jig fish and handed me his G Loomis IMX, I could immediately feel the difference from what I had. I never ended up with one, I've been more hooked on st. Croix, neither are bad. I suggest to the op, handle both sticks if you can, with the reel you plan on using, and you make the decision based off the one that feels best to you.

fishing user avatarSteveo-1969 reply :

I am a G. Loomis fanboy and I've never fished with a St. Croix rod so take all this with a grain of salt. That being said... if I had a chance to buy G. Loomis rods at 50% off it would be a no-brainer!

fishing user avatarMrPeanut reply :

Both rods would fit the bill nicely.  I have a couple St Croix's (although not the bass x model) and I love them.  I also have a couple E6X's and while they might not be the best money can buy, they do the trick.   If I had the option of getting 50% off of the loomis line up though, I would save up to utilize that as much as I can for their higher end lines where their quality starts to shine.  I think a lot of people on here, myself being one of them, would drool over a 50% discount off the loomis line up if it applies to all of their lines...

fishing user avatarTurkey sandwich reply :

I've been fishing St Croix for nearly 20 years and love their rods. However, these two are nowhere near comparable quality.  The Bass-X, while technique specific and a decent bang for the buck rod, does not handle nearly as well as the E6x line that was introduced to compete with the Avid/Avid X lines.  With this said, I agree with the above post.  If possible, save up and invest in the higher end options from G. Loomis.

fishing user avatarwebertime reply :

I love St. Croix.  The deal you have...  you are nuts to not jump on the Loomi (Loomisses?).  EX6 are like the Avid models

fishing user avatarCak920 reply :

I just bought a bass x and haven't tried it yet but it looks and feels great. If you can get a good deal on the E6x I would go for it. Should be a next level rod than the bass x

fishing user avatarMjmj reply :

I bought a bass x about a month ago. Very disappointed it feels stiff and does not load up well on a cast. I actually really don't use it much anymore. It's actually a backup rod behind my b out rod. I don't know anything about Loomis rods, but I know I wouldn't buy another bass x

I haven't tried mine yet but I heard good things. Curious what model yours is? I got a medium Power, extra fast action, 6'8" spinning rod

fishing user avatarwebertime reply :

Point of reference.   Bass X is the previous model Mojo without the purple lipstick.

That's a pretty peculiar problem to have.  What lures are you throwing, and have you matched them with the lure weight and line diameter ratings for the rod?  That rod is build on a similar blank to the Premiers, which have always been quality entry level rods that cast and handle well.

fishing user avatarHookRz reply :

I would say if anything the ES6 compares more to the new SCIII Mojo. The Bass X is Just the Premier dressed up to look like a "cool pro rod".

Not that the Pemier is a bad rod.

I'm not big on Loomis, but if I got this discount I'd definitely take the plunge on an NRX. Do it ;)

fishing user avatarHulkster reply :

The E6X is definitely a step above the Bass X line

The E6X is very similar to the avid blank (SC III graphite from St. Croix) and the Bass X line is only their SC II graphite.

Been considering a conquest to match with either an aldebaran or a metanium

That would be a great combo

fishing user avatarmiddletonbass reply :

I own a few Mojo Bass older models as well as a new Bass X. I also have two E6Xs. Of the two brands, I am a St Croix person (have a couple of Legend Extremes too -- best rods on earth!); but the E6X is definitely a higher-end rod than the Bass X. If price is equal and the determining factor, buy the G Loomis. You'll be very happy with it. If, however, you're a die-hard St Croix person, the Bass X will do the trick too. The new Mojos are worth looking into as well!

I was throwing plastics, with a 3/16 weight and 12 lbs fluro. I really liked the feel of the rod at Cabela's, so I bought it on a whim. I liked it for pitching smaller plastics ( creature baits), but whenever I would is a roll cast I continued to cast a little to my right. At first I thought it was just me, but after a while I noticed that when I cast it was not loading up. I don't hate the rod, but I would take my cheap b_out rod any day over it. I used my buddies avid and loved it. The bass x just seemed very stiff for a med fast rod

fishing user avatarCak920 reply :

Think i might set mine up with a drop shot rig to try this weekend

fishing user avatarTurkey sandwich reply :

@Mjmj yeah, that's weird.  Is it only when you roll cast?  Might it be something with the mechanics of the cast?  If there is a legit problem with the blank, St. Croix has awesome customer service.

I wonder if the rod is mislabelled and it actually has a MH blank.

I only noticed it when I roll cast. When I pitch, I have my spool tension and breaks turned down, so I really didn't notice it then. And let's face it most of the time most people over head cast, you can't see if your rod tip is loading up. What Mlbassyaker said makes sense. Like I said it does feel stiff. Are St Croix rods a little heavier in the action that is labeled?

fishing user avatarTurkey sandwich reply :

Yes.  They tend to run a bit heavier and a bit faster than most other makes.  Also, a fast or extra fast action rod is only going to load at the tip, not halfway down the blank, like for example a fiberglass rod, a moderate action crank bait rod, or a lot of lower end graphite.

Based on your description, I would roll back the breaks a bit when roll casting and use your thumb to control the spool.  The problem is casting distance, ultimately, right?

Im not worried about distance. The issues I have with the rod is it feels stiff and because it doesn't load up, I tend to cast a little to the right. I don't hate the rod, it's just not one of my favorites.

fishing user avatarFurther North reply :

A few thoughts...

  1. If your sponsor is G. Loomis...I'd try to make sure I had a few on my boat.
  2. Bass X rods, while great, are at the lower end of the St Croix line.
  3. With a 50% discount, your dollars go a lot further on the G. Loomis side of the equation...For $250, you'll get a $500 G. Loomis...but only a $250 St. Croix...I'm not the smartest guy on the block...but that looks to me like an opportunity to get into some very nice rods that I could sell at a slight profit if it turned out I didn't care for them.

I've got more St. Croix rods than Loomis, both are great.  Go big, or go home....IMO.

fishing user avatarCam Young reply :

Thought I'd just post back up for you guys letting you know what I have decided to go with. I did not grab an E6X or Bass X. I ended up ordering 4 robs and 4 reels. I got an NRX JWR 7'5" paired with a Metanium for skipping and fishing around docks. I got a GLX DSR paired with a Stradic Ci4+ for drop shot of course. I got a Shimano Expride 7'11" paired with an Aldebaran for pitching/flipping. Finally, I also got a Shimano Zodias 7'6" Glass Rod paired with a Shimano Tranx 400 for cranks. Have my first tournament this weekend (April 21st, 2018) on Smith Mountain Lake, VA. Super Pumped! If any of y'all have fished SML, let me know and give some pointers!

fishing user avatarMatt_3479 reply :

I have finished with and or currently own a st. Croix mojo bass, avid X spinning and avid X casting. I also have an E6x and an imx pro. I personally love the loomis Rods. I’ve been super happy with the avids as well but my e6x feels more sensitive but it’s a bit of an unfair cause it’s a little bit of a lighter rod.

If your set on the e6x series vs the bass x I’d 100% go with the e6x as like mentioned there marketed to compete with the avids. If your looking at trying the loomis Rods and don’t mind spending a little extra dough grab an nrx or glx, not that I’ve owned either but will definately get one sooner or later as I love the feel of my imx pro and it’s not as good as the nrx or glx so I couldn’t image how great they are. The IMX PRO is another series that wouldn’t be bad to get. Great rods at a little more then the e6x but not as much as glx or nrx.

i don’t know the truth behind this but a gentleman I deal with at a local store was a st. Croix guy until last season when he fished the glx and imx pro series rods. He said the glx blew any of his st. Croixs out of the water (legend extremes, elites etc.) and the imx pro was more of a comparison to the legends and he still felt the imx were better rod.

You made the right choice by not getting an e6x.

Should of read the post above before posting lol. Must of missed it. Congrats on your new purchases and I hope you enjoy the new rods. Once you give them a go let us know what you think! Super curious on what you think about these new rods. The ci4+ is a beautiful little reel, I love mine on my e6x when dipping for walleye
