Why Aren't Spare Spools Available 2025

fishing user avatarMikeltee reply :

It would make sense to invest in a great reel and buy a few extra spools for it to keep an array of lines to swap. I assume they don't do this because we just buy the whole reel. Does anyone know of a $200-$300 reel that has spare spools available?

fishing user avatarfvogel67 reply :

You can buy spools on Ebay

fishing user avatarFishingGeekTX reply :

Cynically it's because it creates pressure to purchase multiple reels.  $200 reel vs $50 spool, they go for reels.

$100 for Metanium spools, I won't purchase one.  If it was $50, I'd consider it.  $25, I'd have one or two for every reel.

fishing user avatarScott F reply :

You can buy spare spools for most reels. Or, are you just looking for reels that have them included?

fishing user avatarjbsoonerfan reply :

Well you can buy spare spools. If you are asking why they aren't included, it would mean the $200 reel would cost $250 and people like myself wouldn't buy it because I don't need an extra spool. No sense in throwing in extras and having to charge more.

fishing user avatarYoTone reply :

speaking of spools, aftermarket ones are so expensive that you might as well just buy a new reel itself.

fishing user avatarMikeltee reply :

I'm not looking for extra spools to be included in the reel purchase. I looked on ebay and saw none for my Tatula SV,  Lews Pro Tourney,  shimano dc nor the curado K. I'll look into the metanium. I'd rather spend $100 for an extra spool than $300 for the reel.

fishing user avatarScott F reply :

A quick google search found a spare spool for the Shimano Curado 5 sells for $49.95

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

Simply contact the manufacturer.

There are hundreds of aftermarket/spare spools for daiwa reels. Tackletrap has some availalble but hedgehog studios has a large inventory of them. They have both direct replacements for the Tatula SV as well as aftermarket spools for the Tatula SV.

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

Most any reel part supply place should have OEM spools for current reels. There's a place I go to in Dallas called Southwestern Parts that services Daiwa and Shimano, they normally stock everything. I've bought spools, parts and handle sets from them.

I've been doing this for several years ~

Allows quite a bit of flexibility between line types & sizes.

Works well for me.

Pictured are Quantum casting reel spools but if you're will to spend the $$, most any quality Brand offers spools.

As mentioned usually straight from the manufacturer.

I'm with ya, been looking for tatula ct spools for awhile. Tackletrap claimed there is really no stock. I'm hoping this will change.

I fish 2 very different bodies of water, one full of grass where braid shines and the other mostly just wood/rock for cover where i prefer fluro. It's a pain switching but also not worth doubling my reels just for convenience

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Several brands of spinning reels came with a shallow and deep spool as standard.

Most anglers never used the spare spools and the mfr's decided why offer them,it was a cost few anglers took advantage of.

I don't recall any bait casting reels offered with spare spools and doubt there is a market for it. Mfr's all sell spare spools if you look at the parts list supplied with the reel.

I know the internet is tough to navigate sometimes, but you can literally type in "Daiwa tatula ct spool" in google and have a bunch of results in less than a second.

Agree there is no market. Some of the Abu XLTs came with a spare spool.

Spare spools are available from Lew's. Just call their customer service line and subject to availability you can order some. All the ones I ordered are $5 each.

I was able to get spare spools for the following reels:

Lew's Mach II 100

Lew's Mach Crush 300

Lew's Custom Speed Spin 300

Did you try it before offering a useless sarcastic response? Go ahead and please link me where I can buy original not aftermarket daiwa ct spools.

I looked around for Fuego CT spare spools...when I can buy a whole new reel for only $10 more than a spare spool, I'd do that. Changing out a reel is less frustrating in some ways to changing out a spool.

Back when I wanted spare spools for Daiwa reels, I called Daiwa direct and ordered them.  They were less than $25, but that was a decade ago.

fishing user avatarMickD reply :

I have a bag of spools in my boat.  Don't think I have used one for many many years.

I think the reason many of us don't use them is that the new braided lines are so versatile there is less need for them than there used to be.  And in time we gather may outfits for specific purposes/techniques and simply switch the whole outfit when changing techniques or lure types.

And as others have mentioned, the prices of some spools are simply outrageous.

That was going to be my next step but when tackletrap told me they had been on backorder for quite awhile I assumed I wouldnt get any different answer from daiwa. I'm sure they will catch up soon

fishing user avatarMikeltee reply :

Thanks for the tips with the google searches but I dont have a diawa CT. I guess I should have been more specific. Tatula SV TWS and Curado K. I dont want anything aftermarket unless it's as good as or better than OEM. Most of these ebay stores seem hand spun and are in Asian countries and we all know where that leads...  I didn't think of contacting the manufacturer. That is my best bet. I am happy to see some of you feel this way as I do.

Theres guys with 2 rods here and theres guys with 20 rods here and they all seem to have a reel for each one. Im the type of guy that feels that spending more on a rod is much better than spending a ton of cash on reels. That is why I have 9 rods and 5 reels. With this philosophy I hope to have an NRX by next season. Ill probably have to put a Kastking on it though... just kidding

Again....Hedgehog studios....one of the most, if not the most, popular vendor for aftermarket reel parts. Aftermarket spools aren't made stateside and  OEM/stock spools are more readily available, and often times less expensive, from popular JDM vendors.

Stock SV TW is avaiable as well as the ZPI aftermarket for the tatula SVTW which is a much better spool. Both the PG and M series are inprovments over the stock tatula sv spool.

No, I didn't try it, but I know that you can contact the manufacturer for replacement parts. I assumed everyone knew that. Guess that's what I get for assuming. If I wanted a factory GM brake pad, I would contact a GM dealership, but I guess that makes too much sense. Good luck finding your spare spools.

Edit* just googled it. None of this justifies your post, the link is for an aftermarket SV spool not an original tat CT. You are back peddling and I will admit your post caught me at a bad time when normally I would of just ignored it. People say things on the internet they wouldn't dare say to a stranger in person. The point is this forum is to help people. If you have no useful information then dont respond. Glenn and his team go through alot of trouble to keep out the riff raff.

We're done here.  Plenty of resources for spools have been listed.
