Shimano SLX rod? 2025

fishing user avatarteamfyss reply :

Now I know the SLX has been a big topic recently, but mainly the reel. I’m starting to find solid deals on the rod, which makes me wonder if it’s worth picking one up? For instance I found the casting combo at a good price online but I already have a Dobyns fury sitting without a reel..

Should I pick up the combo anyway? I’d rather save a few bucks and buy just the reel if the rod is junk. Let me know what you guys think of the rod! Thanks

fishing user avatarItsHardwick reply :

I’ve read some good reviews. Seemed nice when I played with it in the store the other day. As I just said in another thread Shimanos always seem to fish above their price point too.

I have a 7'5" medium heavy that I bought as the combo, the rod is decent from the limited use I have used it.  I also have a Dobyns Fury and would buy another Fury before the SLX but that is just me.  But like I said I have only fished the SLX a few times, the Dobyns I have been fishing for a couple years now.

fishing user avatarBrett's_daddy reply :

Tactical Bassin' guys have nothing but good things to say about BOTH the rod and reel. If it's good enough for Matt and Tim it would be good enough for me .

Would you consider the slx to be a little more stiff than the fury? I have the fury 704c and hoping to get something a bit more heavy power

That’s very true! But I’ve heard through the grapevine that they receive a prettttyyy sweet deal from Shimano at little to no cost. ???? Just want some first hand personal opinions.

I have a 704 (two actually) and the 6'10" MH XF SLX. Both good sticks, but very different. The SLX is a bit stiffer and a lot faster. I think the SLX would make a good single hook moving bait rod, and a decent enough budget jig and plastic rod. I found it more sensitive than the Fury, but I've never had trouble feeling bites, so don't go by me. I didn't weigh them, but they feel about the same while fishing them, perhaps the SLX is a tad lighter and the Fury a bit more balanced, but it's marginal, and again just going by feel. If you aren't catching fish (or loosing them somewhere along the way) It's you and not either of these two rods.

Awesome, thank you! As long as it’s a solid rod I think I’ll go ahead and pick it up. Can’t hurt to have a back up if I don’t enjoy fishing with it either.

The thing is I trust them, they don't push products, they just give honest opinions on rods/equipment they use. take that for what it's worth. They like many different rods, reels etc. so I personally don't think they're pushing one brand over the other but that's just my take!

No doubt about it! They’re great guys and really do push quality, not just one brand. The fact that Tim Little went from using a Dobyns Fury (my main rod currently) to an SLX combo speaks for itself.

I should receive my SLXC72H Tuesday. Will first pair it with a KK Royale Legend Elite 8ish:1 and plan on using that as a frog rod. Can give some feedback about it after receiving but I won't fish it IRL till mid May

Don't get me wrong I really like the SLX but like I said earlier I haven't fished it much.  Seems like a good rod!

I went ahead and ordered the combo, I’ve been wanting to try the reel out and at the price I found the rod is only costing me $30! Can’t beat it if you ask me

fishing user avatarDerek1 reply :

A freind of mine grabbed the combo for $140 last month I think. He likes it. The real is great for $99. The rod is decent for $99, it becames a great $40 rod real fast.

Update us on how you like it for frogs, I'm considering upgrading my frog rod this summer.

This was not asked to me but I will also update. I was frogging with a Quantum Team KVD 6'10" HF rod last season so I expect a nice upgrade ! :)

Awesome, I am sure you will like it!  I also bought mine back in February for around that price range.  Had been eyeing the reel since they released it and was gonna get another Fury to put it on but the place I bought it from had the combo on sale so I thought for that price what the heck!  If I didn't like it I could always go get a different rod later.  Enjoy the new rod and reel!

How do you know it's not the reel that's costing you $30?...

Matt & Tim are accustomed to high end gear. Their average reel and probably runs around $400. So if they liked the SLX, that's coming from someone with high gear standards. Plus, anyone who has watched knows that both those guys are serious!

I haven't used the SLX rod or reel, but I saw in a post maybe from a week ago that someone was selling the SLX combo for $129.99. So just from my experience with Shimano, the price range of the SLX rod and reel and what it's competing with, I would say it's pretty safe to assume the SLX rod would be one hell of a steal for only $30 if you can find it at that price -- and worthwhile as a backup should you buy something better later.

I believe part of the reason you hear more about the reel is because like Daiwa, Shimano is one of most bass angler's preferred reel manufacturers. If you took a poll on who on these forums own at least one Shimano reel, I have a feeling that the amount of people who said yes would surprise you. But the number who said yes to owning Shimano rods would be more spread out as many people will use rods by other manufacturers that don't make reels, St. Croix, Dobyns, Megabass, etc.

Oh looks like I made my prior post too late. Nice, I hope you like it.

Haha! I only say that because the rod is on sale multiple places as opposed to the reel being full price.

Wow that’s a really good point.. Shimano and Daiwa are just “reel” companies if you asked the majority of fisherman. From what I’m reading online Shimano rods fish above their price point for the most part.

And I would go ahead and link that to the fact that they’re “reel” companies and most people aren’t seeking out their rods consistently enough for them to mark up the price. I could be wrong though.

I just picked up a SLX 6'10" Medium with SLX 150HG reel for jerkbait fishing.  Got it for $125.99 shipped!  Can't beat that deal.  Either a rod or reel for $26...

I believe TacticalBassin recommended this combo for jerkbait fishing.

Well I use a lot of Daiwa rods and reels. Both are top notch. I have no fishing experience with Shimano rods, but I have held a few in stores and they seem rather well made and would not be afraid to purchase one. The Zodias MH/F rod (that's a bit closer to a H than a MH) looks like it would make a fantastic all purpose jig rod as well.

Some "reel" companies make rods (or have them made for them to sell as combos) but remember that both Daiwa and Shimano are both rod and reel companies, it's just they sell a lot more reels than rods.

fishing user avatarRyan_SA reply :

I can only get the SLX 7'2 MH Xtra Fast action and not the 7' MH Fast action.

Would there be a big difference between the XFast and Fast action of this rod?

fishing user avatarHower08 reply :

Fast action is going to be alot more versatile. X fast is going to load so fast you can over power alot of fish and rip the hooks out of them.

I have the exact same combo. Can't wait until the Fall jerkbait season starts up :happy-111:.
