Do you guys think trilene XL is brittle and without much abrasion ressitance at all? Or am I smoking glue on this one?
I wouldn't say it sucks excatly but it definitely wouldn't be my first choice
Like XL while its fresh, takes a couple of weeks to start coiling on me.I'll respool it when it does.
Has its application for heavy structure and cover.
If it sucked, it wouldn't be used as the benchmark in so many comparisons. It's a classic like a 1967 Camaro. Not the latest technology, but still does its job and fun to use. If it says 6#, breaks at 6# and doesn't have a lot of memory, it's working as advertised.
That said, I don't use it anymore

It is what it is...and exactly as advertised.

I use it a lot. Never "brittle" but does not have much abrasion resistance, not supposed too either. In open water or sparse cover it is fine for me. It is cheap so I respool every 5 trips or so. (I love fresh line) When conditions warrant an abbrasion resistant line I have rigs spooled up with yo zuri ultra soft. If you are looking for a line to put on the reel once a year XL is not a good choice, IMHO.
Different tools for different jobs and as RW said "it is what it is"
Put the glue down!
i love it for my spinning rigs... for baitcasters ill stick with my yo-zuri hybrid tho.
I've used that line for years, but after switching to braid, I wont go back.
It worked for me!
Why would you smoke glue? Not the best but does not suck, it has it uses.

I think you're thinking about XT. XL is the thin, better casting stuff.
I used to use it all the time. It is pretty manageable and it casts pretty well. I definitely wouldn't use it near any heavy cover though.
Define 'suck'.
It's quality cheap mono. Probably the same as Stren Original.
Been using it for more than 2 decades, wouldn 't have used it for so long if it sucked.
However it does have limitations, not my first choice for wood or rocks.

Therein lies the key. It isn't line for fishing cover.
It happens constantly. People buy line, use it in the wrong place, then say the line sucks because they were using it in a manner inconsistant with it's purpose.
XL isn't brittle. It's extra limp or smooth casting. It's also not very abrasion resistant, but that's the whole point. If you want an abrasion resistant mono then buy XT (extra tough) or Big Game. If you want a superior managing line then get XL.
I've used it for years with no problem at all. It is my general purpose line of choice. Now with a little KVD line treatment I have it on reels for more than two years with no problem. I respool when I need more line. Little wood or weed in my lakes but lots of rock. I watch for abrasion very closely.

Thank you raul...I couldn't have said it better.
I got my spinning rigs with XL for light cover.
Baitcaster rigs with XT for heavier cover.
It's still my favorite line...I gave up trying to look for better line.
I do like yo-zuri hybrid soft, but the stuff is getting harder to find.
Gotti and Bruce got m to try it, my first full season using it, I have been more than pleased so far.
A good entry-level line for beginners.
A good choice for guys who change their line after every
3-4 outings.
i use 6 lb xl on my UL rig and 10lb big game on the baitcaster.
no complaints. and after some line butter? there is very little memory.
It is like fishing with a rubber band to me.
I used it for a few months, worked fine, except like has been said, not very abrassion resistant. I switched to yozuri hybrid ultrasoft on all my reels. I voted No. It has it's place.
QuoteIt is like fishing with a rubber band to me.
X2 I know mono stretches but it does seem to have a little more give even when compared to other mono lines.

All lines feel like that...unless your fishing with braid.

Not flouro and if I'm using mono I went over to Triple Fish and P Line XXX and they feel great.
Trilene XL is great for the money. I would think it is the standard for mono. A good analogy would be that it is the jimmy beam of line. Inexpensive, yet good, not awesome, not bad either.
Original Stren is the line I usually use because it seems to have the best balance of castability, strength, and abrasion resistance in one line.
XL does cast well but I don't think it has much less memory than Original Stren. Just seems to break down in UV light quickly and gets broke by fish easily, even though I'm not always fishing cover. I never used it around heavy cover.
