Looking to replace an older spinning rod and having a hard time finding one in today's market. Looking for suggestions for the following:
-Must be an Extra Fast tip
-Medium Heavy
-Rated to a lure weight of at least 3/4 oz
-I liked the length of 6'-10" but would consider 6'-8" to 7'-0"
Hardest thing for me to find is the Extra Fast action in a Medium Heavy. If I can find those two as a priority, I may have flexibility on the other specs.
Im also somewhat flexible on price but assume there may be options in the $100-200 range...
Appreciate any and all suggestions.... Thx, -Fry
I'm on the case.
Loomis E6X 803s and 853s are rated to 5/8 oz, extra fast, 6'8 or 7'1, and come in under $200. Close enough? I can keep looking.
Id look at st croix. Their mh spinning will definitely handle 3/4 oz. So will abu garcia 7 ft mh spinning in any model. If you could deal with an inch shorter rod (6'7") there is a mh fenwick aetos spinning for 105 on ffo-tackle.com

Thanks Grumps, that is pretty close but always open to other options...

Really like the St. Croix's and the Veritas, but I'm not aware of any of their MH spinning rods that are Extra Fast...

7'1 MH XF *** Black spinning rod, $40 over budget but Labor Day brings 20% off sales.
This is fun.

Nice, a little spendy yes but def worth consideration...
Avid X 7' MH/F is rated up to 3/4 oz
Keep in mind, there is no industry standard for the terms Fast, XF etc. A St Croix "Fast" is faster than some others etc.
Daiwa Procyon, they have a 7' medium extra fast that is rated to 3/4oz and a 7'medium heavy rated to 1oz with an extra fast action. The rod is $70 but, I recvieved a 7' Medium Light, extra fast as a gift and I was going to send it back but I fished it instead and it was pretty decent. It is hard to find that type of spinning rod because the applications you would use it for are normally covered by casting rods for most anglers but the Procyon fits your needs and it isn't a bad rod by any means.
While we're at it, a custom is a good option at $200.

I was thinking the same thing. I have a 6'6" MH XF rated 1/4-1 and it is a fairly decent rod. I use it for skipping jigs and rage rigs. It's stiff and feels pretty high strung. That may be the grips, though. They take some getting used to.

what he said. The abu Garcia veritas is VERY stiff. I doesn't have an action listed but does have what I would consider an xtra fast tip and it comes in a $100.
The old Rod was a first generation Cabelas XML ... which I believe the blank was made by Loomis...On 8/15/2015 at 3:15 AM, WRB said:Make and model of your old rod?

I also looked up the Aetos and find it odd that of their two MHXF spinning rods, are only rated to a lure weight of 3/8 oz. Seems awfully low for a Rod of that power/action.
Easy rod to find in the inshore section. I may have a dozen that would fit the bill. Many 8/17 medium inshore rods are 1/4- 3/4 lure 7-8' in length. Star, Redbone, Tsunami, Penn, Daiwa, Okuma cedros and others, brand up to you.

I have one of those myself, a medium power, fast action and you are correct, the blanks were made by Loomis. Not many people know this but Cabela's actually helped Gary Loomis get his blank business off the ground by ordering blanks for their in-house rods. Then when Gary began making his own rods he still made blanks for Cabela's but only for the higher end Fish Eagle and XML lines, and the XML I have is a 6'2" M-F and it has the same weight and taper as my G.Loomis Jerkbait rod, blindfolded you would not be able to tell them apart by holding them but the XML has more power and can handle larger baits as the tip is slightly stiffer than the jerkbait rod but still softer than most fast action rods.

That is the problem with most MH-XF spinning rods, Quantum makes a few as there are a couple others but they only have a max lure range of 3/8oz or 5/8oz.
this rod........sg8/17ft70g ml to heavy. A step up is the seagis sk817ft70g. Longest casting rods I own, ml for bass mh for tarpon. I returned 3 st croixs for these rods.
A couple inches longer than I'd prefer, but the Daiwa Tatula has a 7'-2" MH XF rated to 3/4 oz. A couple posts above also mentioned the Daiwa Procyon with similar specs... Looking for input on reel seats/grips. I think the Tatula has a more comfortable set up but I've not ever seen a Procyon in person. Anyone have a perspective on these 2 handles?

Nice rod. I see it's a fast action but the Dobyns a friend of mine has seems almost like an XF. I wish my local fishing stores had them in stock so I could handle it before ordering a $240 rod though...
Just an FYI you could also go on TW and use the "Advanced Search" option to help your search for a rod
You can give Gary Dobyn's a call, he may know what rod fits your needs and often has a few sale items available. On 8/15/2015 at 10:38 PM, FryDog62 said:Nice rod. Caveat Emptor on Veritas 2.0 rods. It's a solid rod but the weight ratings are off IMO. I bought a MLF spinning rod that feels like 1/2 way between M and MH. I was gonna drop shot with it until the first time I used it and couldn't get a good cast or feel a 1/8 oz weight and 4" bait. Anybody else feel the same?
There is quite a bit of information available between manufacturers print outs, and internet customer reviews, that in itself is overload and leads to confusion. Much of what is read is techno babble, which doesn't really mean all that much. I honestly feel 2 rods of the same power and speed an inch or 2 either way is fairly insignificant. The overall weight of a rod isn't that significant either, it's how the entire combo (rod and reel feel). If an exact length and weight is desired then go custom, if you were confused before............lol, good luck.
By caliing a manufacturer, you are going to get guided towards their products only, would Shimano tell you to call Fenwick?
I've been guilty myself of getting confused and doing too much homework as to what's best for my uses.
Having a med. rod for example that fishes light or heavy is not an indication of being a good rod or not, as long as you know the feel of that rod, that's what matters.
