I want to buy this reel because it seems pretty good for throwing crankbaits, but I'v been reading a lot of bad reviews that say it backlashes like no other. I just wanted to know if anyone else has tried out this reel and if its worth buying.

I got one, cant recommend it to anyone. I think im going to get rid of mine. I got other reels that i can use just fine all day. But my SX just doesnt cast very good at all. I think its the botched braking system. Maybe the new 1 will be better.

And Yes mine backlashes like no other.

I have one and I love it its a 2nd Gen. My wife has even used it recently never using a BC before and was tossing a jig around like a pro with out any issues at least not on the reels end she was getting snagged like every cast. Iv said it before in other threads but I have mine set as loose as it will go brakes off spool knob barely on there just enough to take out the side to side movement. I never adjust it I don't adjust any reels from 1/8oz to 3/4oz not the sx, s, or citica. The sx in my opinion is a great reel if them S models didn't look so sexy on a veritas id get more SX's.

seriously, do a search on this forum for 'revo SX' and you'll find hours worth of reading. i've been fishing baitcasters for over 35 years and i'm pretty good at it. i've owned dozens and dozens of reels—probably close to a hundred—and i have never had a more jekyll & hyde reel than my two SXs: amazing one moment, pull-my-hair-out frustrating the next. even the two that i had behaved differently from one another. my advice: wait for the third generation SX...abu garcia is replacing the magnetic brake system with a more-traditional configuration and should work better.

I have completely difference experience with mine. I really enjoy mine. I use it as my frogging reel with #50 PP I adjusted as recommended and I can honestly say no backlashes. I have had mine for well over a year.

I have both gen1 and 2 sx's and the gen2 is bit better. Gen3 is supposed to be even better.

A side note! You can convert the gen1 to gen2 with simple parts from abu. I bet the gen3 stuff will work on the gen2's, But won't know until I try. But that's a ways off!

I seen a thread where a fella used some parts from an S to make his SX a centrifical braking. You'll need an S spool and side cover to convert. If you wanna play.

It can be finicky compared to other reels if you tend to whip your casts out. It does cast far without much umph needed when set up right. The drag is strong as an ox. If I had to pay 159 or 129, Id have passed on it but it was 70 bucks and its good reel. Someone else like Glenn may be able to use this reel and make me feel like a rookie with it.

The spool would still work(need to rewind the line though). But the side cover will need to match dexterity. You only use the parts from the S cover and swap them over to the SX cover. Or if you want a killer sx use the winch spool and side cover parts. Add the gears, handle and star. Pricey? yes, I just didn't like the winch blue.

I should also note it applies only to the gen1 SX. Gen2 requires the gen1 pinion gear or gearset because on the infini spool using a different pinion gear in the gen2. Forgive me I'm old and forget things!

Ive had a first gen since they came out. Diggy is spot on, you just cant whip it like other reels and you really gotta put forth more effort to cast far. Now that I have the hang of it backlashes are rare. It was my 2nd quality BC and can still remember picking up my buddys old ragged out lookin chronarch SF and being shocked at the ease it took to get the spool going vs my sx. Man thise old chronarchs were special lol.

That said, other than having a look at it and scratch it finish, it has been very very durable. Ive beat on this reel. Honestly thrown it down out of disgust quite a few times and it has been rock solid without much care to its up keep. If your lines stout enough a Big fish is gonna come in on your terms lol.

I am definitely partial but I love my revo's. I prefer their magnetic breaking to their centrifugals. I dont put much effort into casting. And maybe thats the trick. I'm guessing people have their breaks maxed out and are whipping their baits out as hard as they can. I just flick my wrist and the baits go where they need to. Thats why I love them. Plus the drag is second to none.

My favorite characteristic of the reel is the way it fits in my hand. Like butter.

I had an SX, and I liked it just fine. It is a little different to set up than others, but somewhere on this site is a post on how to set it up. It involves turning the brakes all the way off before setting the spool tension. I bet that would help alot of the people who are having problems. Bluebasser has mine now, I traded it for a Cardiff 100. Why? I just like not having any brakes, and I love how my tuned up Cardiff 200 casts.

I must say that I absolutely love my sx. Mine is paired with a 7"6 M/H veritas and it casts incredible with no effort. Im using a 30lb braid ( sufix 832 ) .

Any mag only reel needs to be set up correctly and casted smoothly. The nature of mag brakes makes them ineffective for super fast spool start up (which isn't necessary anyway). Turn the brake off, set cast control knob to allow a slow fall, then set the brakes to 1/2 power and fine tune for conditions after a couple casts. The SX makes a better flipping reel than a cranking reel. The Winch, Curado E5, or Daiwa Crazy Cranker are examples of cranking specific reels and really only helpful for deep cranking. My personal choice is a 4600C3.

Yes, this. Both of my SX's are set up for flippin'/pitching. One is for punching, the other for jigs and such.

I used to use one on a cranking rod, and it still performed very well on that. More than capable of casts reaching out to 200' or so. What others have stated before, it takes an easy, smoooooth cast to get these to perform their best. You dont need to be chopping wood to cast them. Most important, is a well trained thumb!

I have had 2 gen2 sx's and they cast great right out of the box. Never had any problem with backlashes and did great casting into the wind. Never tried a gen1 but I think those are the reels most people had problems with. I know a couple places where you can get them for $110, and that's a great deal for those reels.

I wasn't crazy about my gen2 SX when I first got it, it is different from my other reels, but the more I've fished with it, the more I've come to like it. Smooth consistant casts are the key for me, it's less tolerant of "lazy" casts than my other reels for sure. For the money,I think they're great, in fact I may very well grab another with prices going down.

I love my revo sx. I have a second gen. Bought my chronarch around the same time. Same year manufactured. I have to say my revo casts light years ahead of my chronarch but not as smooth, light or low profile. Drag beats the shimano out of the water. Backlashes aren't really an issue. If I know I'm fishin somewhere that I need extra reach I'll bring the sx, if it's somewhere tight I'll bring the chronarch. But just for pure power and casting distance the sx outmatched the shimano every time.

I have a 2nd gen SX as well. I read all of the horror stories about back lashes, but I know how to set up my reel so no issues for me. It's a great reel, and I don't think the Gen 3 will be nearly as good.

I just cant see throwing down the money for a magnetic break reel. If you want an upgrade off the Revo S, the STX is only 30 dollars more than the SX. I cant back lash mine to save my life.

My next one is gonna be the Revo S, but that new STX is looking awesome. If I get a back lash, it's during the cast not the landing, so centrifugal would be the way to go for me. The new STX has the best of both worlds, and might be worth the extra $70.
