What is your setup for swimjigs and bladed jigs? 2024

Just curious what everyone is using and why. And I am talking about a 1/4 oz - 3/8 oz swimjig or chatterbait with your average trailer.

I read people who use braid and others that use fluorocarbon. What do you use? Why?

What rod do you use and why?

I use a 7'3" MH/F Duckett Micro Magic rod with a reel in the 6.X:1 ration. For my line I prefer to use Yo-Zuri hybrid 10#.

I like this setup because I can make a good cast pinpoint cast with the rod since the tips a little softer than the rest of my MH/F rods. I like the Yo-Zuri for this because I seem to get just the right amount of stretch in the line so the lure isn't ripped out of the fishes mouth. The Yo-Zuri also has a breaking strength much higher than listed at 10#. I think I read someplace that it breaks closer to 16#.

I also have a 6'10" Crucial MH/F that I use for spinnerbaits, and will sometimes put a chatterbait on that, too. I will do this to try and refine my presentation - for instance to see if an all white, or white with chartreuse is getting a better bite. Once I settle on the color I will put that color on the Duckett, and fish that.

For bladed jigs I use a 6' 6" MH/XF with a 6.4:1 reel and 15lb Big Game mono. I use them because they work for me better than anything else I tried.

I don't hardly ever fish swim jigs.

I use a Tatula 7'1" MH/R with 40# braid. It's pretty stiff, but has a nice bend. If I didn't use braid, I'd use my Tatula 6'10" MH/F, but as it is, that's my worm/jig rod.

Swim jigs -dobyns 734-7:1 OG zillion-15# fluoro

chatterbaits/spinners-dobyns 733-tuned curado 51e-15# fluoro

i use them because they work really well for the weights i use and areas i throw them in

MH rod and no-stretch braid- I'm afraid I'd rip too many lures from the mouths of fish. I take it you wait a second or two before setting the hook?

I use my DX745 for my swimjigs, its a bit overkill tbh, but it was the XF tip I want for jigging. For my chatterbaits I use a Savvy 704, I'm debating whether or not I should upgrade to a Champion 735 though, as I fish 3/8 to 1/2 oz with a big trailer.

Overall I'd recommend a M/XF for the swimjig, and a MH/F for the chatterbaits.

I use a Dobyns DX 744 with a Curado 200ihg and 16lb Sniper.

Although these days I'm more into St. Croix the 744 is the perfect bladed jig rod for me.

For swim jigs I am using a cabelas tournament zx frog rod 7'3" H with a 6.3 daiwa tatula. I have it spooled with 20lb fluorocarbon. This is one of my favorite setups.

For vibrating jigs I use a 7' MH Abu Garcia veritas with a shimano curado 200i 6.4. It's spooled with 15lb suffix siege. This is also what I use for spinnerbaits.

Yeah, with swim jigs and all moving baits, I let them take it before I set the hook, and oftentimes a reeling hook set is enough, but that rod is a mod fast action, so that helps. The MH has more to do with the backbone of the rod for solid hooksets and fish control.

I usually throw mine on an Abu Garcia Veracity 7' MH-F with a 6:1 reel like a Metanium or Chronarch ci4. In cold water I'll drop down to a 5:1.

As for line, I use either 40lb 832 braid or 14lb Sniper FC, depending on the water clarity and the amount of weeds.

I dropped even slower to a 3.8:1 curado on a 7' MH-F & 12lb Sufix.

Me personally, whenever I want to slow retrieve a bait I just go to the classic hand-line. Just kidding. I throw 1/4 oz chatters and swimjigs on 12 lb fluorocarbon, 26 IPT reel

I use a St.Croix Triumph 6'6" MH that has a softer tip and a Revo Premier Gen 2 6:4:1. It seems to be a great setup for swimjigs, spinners, chatterbaits. I tried this setup for flipping jigs one day and it was horrible for that application. I felt like I had zero connection with the jig but for moving baits, the soft tip allows the rod to load up and I get a pretty good hook up percentage with it.

I use 10 lb. good ole Berkley Trilene XL in moss green.

Swimjig/SPinnerbaits - GLX 783C (6'6" MH/F) - 55 Daiwa Samurai Braid

Chatterbaits - I used to use my 783 but very late in the season I started using my GLX 855 CBR and liked that so we shall see how that treats me with a little more use.

I use braid with swim jigs so I can instantly impart the action on the lure while I'm swimming it back. I get waaaay more action on braid and a mh fast rod.

For bladed jigs, I use all 3 depending on what cover or honestly what rod I have available. I've had success on mh cranking rods and mf/mhf rods with both fluoro and mono

Dobyns savvy 703 , 6.3:1 curado I, 12lb sufix. I think it is a good all around spinnerbait/chatterbait rod.

I throw swim jigs on a Dobyns Champion 735c with a curado 200e7 which is my jig rod but I usually only use that rod in thick cover.

I also throw them on a Dobyns Savvy 734 with a lews bb1 pro. I also throw chatterbaits on that setup. for the swim jigs I use braid and for the chatterbaits I use fc.

I prefer my 6'6" Shimano pole (couldn't tell you what model). I feel it's got the right amount of accuracy and distance on the casts. I'm a little more inexperienced than other people on this forum so I use Fluoro for everything.

I throw both baits on a 7' MH rod (Duckett Ghost). MH is plenty of power and I prefer a 7' because I am typically throwing them in tight spaces

7-1 MH Om#n with 14lb FC.

Late last season DVT did a rebuild for me on a st criox LTB sweeper spinnerbait blank and it is set up for swim jigs. Just the right amount of tip to let em get the bait and plenty backbone to bury it. He took a crap build on a nice blank and made it a swim jiggin mofo.

That is the rod I have been using the last couple years for chatterbaits and spinnerbaits. It's been a great rod. I see that most people are using fluorocarbon in the 12-15 lb range. I have been using 15 lb P-Line fluorocarbon.

I know alot use braid and i just have not had the need. Swim jigs are my 100% confidence baits so i always have one on and its in my hand about half the day. I have fished FC from 12 to 20lb and find the 14 is my number. I have 0 problems with hooks ups or break offs. In fact in the last 2 seasons I have not lost a single fish on a swim jig. Biggest was 6.6 in April. I feel like the FC gives me an edge as well. Like a ninja. Check your line and knot often and you will be fine.

For Chatterbaits I use a 7' 2" MH/F Phenix M1 and 12# Yo Zuri.

For Swim Jigs it's a Loomis MBR 843C GLX with 20# braid.

I started fishing competitive 2 years ago. This club fished a mix of Delaware ponds, and rivers. I felt like in the ponds I was getting around efficiently and from the back of the boat giving them something the other guys weren't. They hit the cover with the normal stuff and I mop up with the swim jig used a bunch of different ways. Pick apart what they missed....For me more efficient than a bladed jig. It goes easily where the bladed jig struggles.

For bladed jigs I use the same set up that I do for spinnerbaits. I use a MH 7'0" BPS extreme rod with an Abu 5600C4 reel. The Abu is spooled with 15 pound Big Game.

I use the same rig for swimming jigs that I use for fishing them on the bottom. I have 15 pound Yo-Zuri spooled on a Curado 200E7. The reel is on a St. Croix rod. Sorry I can't remember the model.

The same setup used for spinner baits of similar weight. M or MH fast action, normal speed reel (6.1:1 etc). Copolymer or braid with leader for abrasion resistance around wood. Personally I don't subscribe to the pulling bait away from a fish theory. If your getting short strikes change size, color, speed or another variable.

My swimjig, chatterbait, spinnerbait rod is the same as my frog rod. This is one rod I don't get fancy with. The 7' MH Berkley Lightning rod shock, with 50lb braid, and a 7.3:1 Daiwa Exceler reel gets it done for me.

I fished chatterbaits heaviliy this past year, and used an Abu Garcia Revo STX Gen2 spooled with 20 lb fluoro, with a Phenix X3 Crankbait Rod. Haven't used a swim jig yet, but the chatterbaits you can just fish like a crankbait.

Swimjigs- 7ft mh Lews American hero rod with Lews tournament mg 6:4.1.50lb powerpro. Also used for frogs

Chatterbait- Denali rosewood 7'4" heavy multi purpose. Tatula 6:3.1 50lb power pro.

Last summer was the first time throwing them and had really good success on those combos with braid.

7'3" MH Duckett Ghost with a shimano Curado 201I with 12b P-line CXX. I use CXX on most of my rods due to a lot of rocky river fishing. I like other lines and the CXX doesn't cast the best with light lures on my baitcasters but i have burned through other lines in a month if I am fishing the bottom with lots of snags.

I have spent much more time with a chatterbait than a swimjig. For the Chatterbait I use a Dobyns 734c Champion, 7:1 Curado E, and 16lb sunline sniper fluorocarbon. I really have a hard time feeling I could do much better than keeping them hooked with this. I really do "horse" the fish in and keep my rod TOTALLY loaded. It's all about finding a system that works for you.
I'm not quite to this level of confidence with a swimjig yet... I tend to use either a Dobyns 744dx Champion Extreme, or a Dobyns 764c Champion, I go back and forth with Braid or Fluoro on these rods.
