What is your go-to most versatile line? 2024

Hey BR,
The time is coming soon when I will need to rebuy line. Now that I have some experience under my belt I’m curious to see what y’all say.
I’ve got 1 rod 1 reel I’m going to be throwing everything on it (except for finesse stuff) from top water to Carolina rigging. I’m going to be throwing into all sorts of cover, brush, grass mats, lay downs you name it.
What line are you going to spool up and why?

That’s asking a lot for one rod, but I’d probably opt for braid in the 40lb range.

I always used 10 or 15 pound PowerPro on my spinning reels as that was what my dad used. When I got my first baitcaster I tried a Mono and really didn’t like it that much. May have been because it was a cheaper kind. After that I switched to a 40# PowerPro and use it for everything. Only been broken off twice both times it was a northern pike.????

@5by3 is right, you are asking an awful lot from a single line. That being said, I would choose either Sufix 832 (it's braid and it's "neutrally buoyant") and be prepared to use a fluoro leader when appropriate OR, depending on where you fish, sacrifice some "feel" to get more abrasion resistance and spool it with Yo-Zuri hybrid (this gets you a clear line with excellent abrasion resistance and less stretch than mono). I have only 7 setups myself and all but two have one of these on them (the others are mono and a different braid). I also always have Seaguar fluoro leader with me.

I would use Sufix Siege in 12 pound test. It will float for topwater baits. I have also used it for Texas rigged soft plastics before I switched to floro.

I guess I am in the minority but I would throw 14-16# good quality mono if I was going to just use one rod/reel. That is about all I used in the 80's/90's, don't remember having any problem with it. I still used it on my top water and cranking rod.

Another vote for 30lb or 40lb braid, buy some spools of mono and flouro for leaders and you can cover a lot.

Another vote for braid with leader! Other option could be Berkley Trilene Big Game, i´ve done almost everything with that line except fishing in super heavy vegetation, wich i don´t have in the lakes i fish, but i guess that with a heavy enough pound test line it could be done...

Yeah it is. For now though it will have to do lol. It’s cheaper to buy line than a 2nd rod/reel combo.

I think each line has its own place, but mono is the most versatile.

I'd go 30 lb Sufix 832 braid and use leaders to match the situation (if needed).
And if I 'had to' - with a 7 ft M/H casting stick could be semi-effective throwing most anything most anywhere - except into or over very heavy cover & or the slop.
But whatever you do - do not tell this guy.
As this is an extremely touchy subject with him.

One set up and you don’t want to mess with leaders ....I’m voting 12lb Yo Zuri Hybrid...will get everything done for you just fine. Just make sure you hit it with KVD line and lure conditioner night before and you’re good to go

I've got a 3000 yard spool of 12# AN40 and also use a lot of 12# Siege. Why? Although each type of line has its advantages, I prefer a mono/co-polymer. These are very good all-around lines. If I could only use one line, maybe I would increase that to 15#. This would be for a casting reel. My choice would be totally different for a spinning reel. Braid all the way as I don't like large spinning reels so my mono/co-polymer line choice for spinning reels is 8# or less. I'd go with 15/20# braid for all-around use.
Why limit yourself to one line? Buy a spare spool. Carry braid one one and a mono/co-polymer on the other.

I like a co-polymer on my spinners either straight or with a lighter leader depending on uses... baitcasters I do prefer a braid, but you seem to do well with copolymer on them. My braid I almost always attach a leader- right now it's 10 lb Seaguar Red Label fluorocarbon. I like the invisibility of the FC with the sensitivity of the braid. Confidence thing, whatever... But yeah you can do all with a single rod so long as you're comfortable with it. Is it "proper"? Probably not... but not everyone can budget in a bunch of rods to do different things. Sometimes doing more with less equates to more experience. And catching that tricky fish with the "wrong set-up" is also a lot more rewarding personally lol.

I use 65 lb power pro on BC and 8 lb Berkley fireline on spinners. Maxima Mono leader for shallow stuff, yo zuri fluro leader for deep in clear water. Straight braid when I can get by with it, which is almost always in our stained and muddy water.

30 double digits across 5 states on Big Game, most in pretty dense cover.

I just bought some of this line based on WRB’s recommendation and must say I’m really impressed with it. Very low stretch (best I’ve found besides braid) and very manageable.

I'm really surprised by all the Power Pro recommendations. Not my cup of tea. I'd go with 30 lb 832.

When I retired and got into bass fishing 20 years ago I had three baitcasters and each had 14lb BPS Excel mono to fish the tidal Potomac with everything. My spinning reel had 8lb BPS Excel mono and I caught lots and lots of bass and did not lose any. Amazing how we become victims of product development.

My Opinion...
Not much you can't do with:
Baitcasting: 7' MH/F, 40lb braid, 12-17lb fluoro/mono leader when necessary and/or appropriate.
Spinning: 6'6" M/F, 15lb braid, 6-10lb fluoro/mono leader when necessary and appropriate.
With these 2 things, I'm confident that I can do almost anything. In fact, add a 6'6" M/F baitcasting setup spooled with 12lb mono for crankbaits, and that's what I typically fish with. Those 3 rigs cover a lot of ground.

I would go with 15 pound mono/flurocarbon or should you ever throw a frog on the same rod, then 40lb braid.
Ideally I would get something like a M/F or MH/MF rod and put on some 12-15lb braid on that, then 40lb braid on my MH/F. That opens up what you can do with it.
