Hey guys. I disassembled and cleaned up my shimano chronarch 201E6. I used quantum hotsauce reel grease and oil on it, cleaned it all up. The drag washer (BNT2431) was shedding all over the inside of the reel. The drag washer between the anti reverse ratchet and drive gear is fine, slight dust, but nothing that concerned me. Still had deep texture. The one between the key washer and the drive gear is the one that was in poor shape, and i also accidentally bent it. So i ordered a new one. The drag washers don't require grease, correct? I didn't grease the one which i'm not replacing, as it was dry to begin with.
Those dartanium drags or stock drags needs to be greased to work effectively and smooth. Grease them with CALs grease.
The only drag washers that is sometimes recommended running dry is the carbontex drag washers.
Yes, the rear one was a carbontex. It had no lubricant on it to begin with.
Are your drag washers smooth or textured......
The one between the anti reverse ratchet and drive gear is textured like a grinding wheel you would use for metal, and the one which I'm replacing as far as I can tell is smooth.
I know the rear one is a carbontex. The one I'm replacing I'm guessing is also. It's part BNT2431.
CarbonTex are textured...It sounds like you have a smooth and a carbontex mixed. If you are are looking to get the most out of the drag you should have both carbontex. You can call Dawn at Smooth Drag and order them up there....http://www.smoothdrag.com
Whatever came stock with the chronarch is what I have. You are probably right on the mix. Do I grease the new one with my hot sauce grease or install it as it is from the package? It's already on its way so ill switch it out next time around.
Stock reel should have two Dartainium drag washers....here is a image of Dartainium

Again you should be matching your drag washers either two Dartainium or two CarbonTex. Shimano Star Drag Grease is what I use and would recommend. Dartainium should get a light coat of grease. For CarbonTex I take a model paint brush with a very very small dab and then coat it. It should be so little you do not think it is covering it,just so there is enough to lube it....There are others that use Cals grease and do not lube CarbonTex so you will have to sort that out for yourself.

Chris,
Did you by the reel used? The reason I ask is there shouldn't have been a mix on the drag pads
I wouldn't grease anything in that reel with Hot Sauce, especially the drag pads.....
As stated Dartainium pads do not get any lubrication. The Carbontex pads can be run dry or lubricated (as stated on the packageing).
Use either Shimanos drag grease or Cals Drag/Gear grease...
Good Luck & Tight Lines!
I lubed my entire reel with hot sauce oil
And grease, I believe you sent it to me actually. I bought the reel brand new, it's the 201E6. The washer that sits in the drive gear was like the old layered washers in older reels, almost like a thick cardboard. It was the color of lead when I pulled it out, and there were flakes of it in the reel.

RM,
Interesting always thought they got a light coat of drag grease, you say no.
That is odd. Just saw the post above yours. Mine is a mixture of carbontex and dartanium. The one which broke is dartanium, the one behind it is carbontex. But yes. The reel was brand new, never opened from shimano.

Must be an experimental reel........
Is the only reason you all don't recommend hot sauce in a shimano due to warranty? I service my reels myself so I don't worry about warranty. The reel is going on two and I just cleaned it! I had good results with hot sauce in my other reels, and it's what I had. And are you guys positive my reel shouldn't have that carbontex washer in it? The hot sauce won't ruin anything internally right?

No, Chronarch E series come from the factory with a carbon matrix (not Carbontex brand) washer under the drive gear, and a Dartanium washer under the keyed waqsher. The carbon matrix washer should be installed dry, while the dartanium washer runs best with a vapor thin coating of drag grease. If you bend or break the dartanium washer, I recommend replacing with a Smooth Drags Carbontex washer for durability. Install it dry for power, or cold weather use, and greased for ultimate smoothness at initial break away.
I just ordered some drag grease from Shimano and asked that question about the warranty being voided with the sauce and they told me no. It is supposed to come with two Dartainium Drag Washers, so how you got both is a mystery to me. My concern is you have two different styles of washers so you are not getting the max performance. Just order a set of CarbonTex and call it a day .......

Thanks John for clearing that up....What was the purpose of that.
The washer behind the drive gear on the Curado E series was that stamp cut teflon crap, and grease would spatter, and it could get sticky. My guess is that the carbon matrix was a quick, inexpensive solution to that problem.
Ok. So now that that's cleared up, my reel isn't a Frankenstein lol. I did a good job soaking my bearings and cleaning the whole reel thoroughly with a toothbrush and such. All oil reel and oil it gone. Put a drop of hot sauce oil in each bearing, and hot sauce grease on all gears, and I prefer grease on my worm gear, so please don't try and tell me otherwise. When it finally goes I switch to oil, don't ask lol. Anyways, I should be good right? I don't want 15 different brand reel products to have to keep around. And you said shimano doesn't void warranty if using hot sauce? I know it shouldn't be mixed with other grease or oil, so that's why I thoroughly cleaned it. It was raining and I had nothing better to do. Good thing too, no grease was left in the reel! Just pond scum.
Sounds good, everything except the hot sauce, lol. We'll leave that debate for another day.
Personal preference not fact? Lol. But I'm fine to throw a thin film of hot sauce on the dartanium washer, slap the reel together and call it a day, right?

Sure can and the next time you open up the reel everything inside will be stained RED........
I don't mind, it's not like i look at the inside of my reel lol. As long as it works, i'm fine with it.

I would NOT put gear grease on the drag. Get some Shimano Star Drag grease or Cal's.
I've seen you can run them dry, does this cause premature wear, or just not as smooth of a drag?
Dartaniums are terrible when run dry - very sticky.
And hot sauce can't be used at all on dartanium?
You should only use drag grease, no reel grease on drag washers.

NO!
Thanks guys.
One more question. This being the first shimano i've worked on (spring under the drag was a new one for me), when i tighten the level wind guide down, will it snug down and stop turning, or do i just turn it until i feel comfortable with the tightness? Other ones i've done have tightened down, but i don't want to strip out anything.
Finger tight is fine.

Several years ago I had oiled my Spheros 4000 with an oil other than Shimano's. Some months latter I sent the reel in to Shimano for warranty service and was denied, reason was I didn't use Shimano oil. At one time we had a Shimano rep on this forum, no need to mention the name, and claimed it wasn't true, he was totally wrong. Recently I replaced the knob on one of my stradic 4000 fi, the rubber was wearing off. Before ordering the part I did an internet search, I was not the only one with this problem, one guy in fact had 5 stradics with this problem. The very same Shimano rep chimed in on another forum claiming the problem was due to a chemical present in some sunscreens, no one on that forum used sunscreen or insect repellent including my self, just another misrepresentation and not fessing up. As I was ordering my knob I noticed how many stradic parts were either not available or on back order for quite a few months, I don't care how good their products may be out of the box, their service makes me want to shop elsewhere and I have been.........
Interesting. I've NEVER had any issue with their service, or Daiwa's, Pure Fishing's, or even Quantum's. I deal with these guys on a monthly basis. I even recall a time where there was a drag upgrade, from a two washer arrangement to a six washer arrangement. The person in question, Dan Thornburn, did a free swap for the upgraded spool. Knobs wear out. People complain about durable plastic knobs being cheap, and then complain when the softer rubber ones wear out, LOL. You can't win them all.
