Goodness guys. If you take along a rod reel combo to meet every situation you encounter or every method of fishing you use, are not you complicating things a bit? The number of rods and baits required must make it hard to fish without tripping over something in the boat. This bring me to a question .How many rods and reels does a guy need to carry to figure he is pretty much covered. I carry 6 and am trying to find out what I use the most and perhaps cull one or two to make it simpler. What do you guys think? "
I have a rod and reel for every type of fishing I do, but don't carry them all. I base it on the season and weather.

For example, I have a rod that is just for jerkbaits, which after the Spring, I don't carry with me until the Fall. I have a frog rod, that I only carry in the summer, etc. At one time, I may have 8 rods at the most in my boat.

What he said.
YES ////
Things have changed since I added a couple rods, so the plan is this....
If I plan on spending the day Bass fishing, I'll have 4 rods to bring with. Very rarely do I have 3 rods out at one time. I'm figuring that I will alway's have my crankbait rod ready to go, no matter what, as usual, and then I will switch between having my worm rod or heavy general purpose rod or medium general purpose rod out.
If I only have a couple hours to fish, I'll most likely just grab the crankbait rod, and the worm rod.
I carry 5 rod-n-reels year round
Texas Rig
Jig-N-Craw
Light Texas Rig
Spinner Bait
Rat-L-Trap
I normally carry about a dozen in the rod locker and keep 3-5 on deck. The rest are in the garage until needed for a specific purpose such as deep cranking or swimbaits..................Al
I am along the same lines as most, I carry 8-10 with me on the boat at all time, plus have more that get rotated in and out based on seasonal need.
Collecting technique specific equipment is just part of the fun for a lot of guys. All your fishing can be done with one rod and three covers just about everything:

Being shore bound for most of my fishing spots I carry only two. My medium xfast and my ultralight rod for bream if I get snuffed with the bass.
I have at least six on the boat at all times.

I have 54 rod/reel combos and usually carry 15-20 when fishing in my bassboat. I usually only carry 7-10 when I fish in my jon boat. I switch around some based on the time of year.

It can be done IMO minimally with 3 and this is going bare bone in which these rods will play multiple roles.
1 spinning rod to cover finessing and other light plastics
1 casting rod for jigs, heavier/bigger plastics with or without weights
1 more rod (casting or spinning angler's choice) for cranks, jerks and spinner/buzz baits.
This covers the gamut minimally. In addition, the scenarios you face should also be an infulencing factor. Someone who faces lily pads and thick slop probably doesn't need a crankbait setup as a priority need to have rig and someone facing open and deep water probably doesn't need to bring along a flippin' stick.
As a shorebound person, I have tried carrying up to 4 rods and realize that no matter what I bring, it usually boils down to 2 of those rods being used 90% of the time. As a result, only 3 I bring and still the 3rd one hardly sees play. Two of the three rods cover the scenarios I face.

Pretty impressive line up of rods there fishing4fun. I have rods for every application I fish. Some days, they are strung from one end of the boat to the other. Other days I will have only one or two rods out.
If I'm in my boat, I'll have 6-9 rods on deck depending on the season.
If I'm in someone else's boat, I'll carry 3-4.
When I wade the creek or bank fish, I only carry 1 rod and a couple of lures in a ziploc baggie in my pocket. I do not like carrying things around with me since I tend to wander off.
I do not recall the name of the movie. Robert Duvall is explaining how a driver can help tune a stock car by telling the mech what it is doing. Cruise replies I can't do that. Duvall asks why not. Cruise says because I have no idea what you are talking about. I am like that with fishing rods. I have no idea what you are talking about when you refer to a specific type rod . I rig my rods for line weight from 4$ to 20# for a total of 6 outfits and use what outfit covers the situation I am in that time. I fish out of a 14 ft aluminum rigged the way I like it. This does two things for me. It gives me a easy towing and handling boat and prevents me from buying and carrying too much stuff. It seems to work out well for me.
4pwr,
Here is a basic explanation:

Almost...it makes it simple, just pick up a different combo.

dang! you take this fishing thing seriously! haha, wow nice setup
I keep 6-8 rods in the boat. If I have more than 3 of them on deck I'm having a tough day.

Catt, I dont see a carolina rig listed anywhere....I thought you were going to start riggin' this season.
I only take 3, maybe 4 rigs with me on the boat. I can't stand a lot of 'clutter', and that includes the front deck of my boat. By only taking a few rigs, this also helps me focus and improve on a few baits at a time.

Whewwww.....I feel much better....thought I had too many.....now the bait monkey is back!!! ;D ;D
I have 5 baitcasting combos, 4 spinning combos and two spincast combos. I know, I know what you are thinking but I have two boys.
I will have up to 5 combos in the boat at a time. I would have more but I don't have enough room in my boat for more.
It may seem like I am crazy but I hate to retie new lures when I want to make a change. It is easier to pick up another rod.
5 to 6 for me
I own 12 combo's and usually only bring 6 or 7 with me. I usually have two crank bait rods, a t-rig rod, a rod for skipping, one for spinnerbaits, one for frogs and one with a senko, usually

Ditto to that. Still, I have several different rod/reel combos for different situations/fish species, including 2 fly rod setups.
4pwr: the name of the movie you were referring to is: "Days of Thunder" Tom Cruise played the rookie stock car driver named Cole Trickle and Robert Duvall was recruited to be his crew chief (I think his name was Harry Hogge in the movie).
If I could get away with it, I'd probably use a snoopy pole. But I think 3 rods/reels will suffice for most situations. But since I like to flyfish and panfish in addition to bass fishing, I add two more outfits to the fray. So, 5 rods is what I usually carry.

I didn't list a Carolina Rig cause I aint been out this year :'(

Answer close to.... YES. In fact it makes it simpler, just don't step on them
YES, I have 16 rods in my boat pre riggrd because I fish alot of tournaments and I want to just pick up a rod than to have to stop and change my bait on a rod. Time is money! I also guide at night and that way it helps out too.
i have just one combo currently....i am a bank fisherman and i carry a custom 6' MH rod wth a revo S on it.....i just fixed one of my C3's and plan to buy a crankin rod for it. then my next combo will be a spinning set up...probebly M/X-fast. and that will be it untill i manage to get a boat...then i might decide to buy another...but just for your info...i use my current set up for everything and it works just as good for cranks as it does for jigs. but i would like to get away from having to retie so much.
