I want to hear if something I heard today at BPS today is true.
This is what I heard, "Shimano will not be participating in the yearly reel donation program at Bass Pro Shop."
This will mean no discount on Shimano reels for donating a gentley used reel to a good cause.
If that is the case, I pretty much lost my reason for making a 3 hour drive Saturday morning.
Looks like I need to give the store a call tomorrow.
Yep, no disclaimer on the flyer.....like not including or except Shimano. They gotta say it on there for it to be true.....don't ya think?
QuoteThe trade-in allowance applies to any brand, even the wrong brands! :
You mean like Pfleuger ?
Fishtank is correct. The Shimano rep will not be present nor will they honor the coupon on Shimano products. This was announced yesterday to employees at the Sevierville store. No details to the ticking contest were given but apparently it is at the corp. level. All other manufacturers are still particapating. Much more to this story than is being told.....................Al
Ft. Lauderdale Store Manager confirms. No trade in for Shimano. Was precisely going to get one to. Will need to think of an alternate make now.
Interesting. I hope there's something released as to why they aren't participating. Sounds like it's for a good cause.
Dang, messes up my plans of getting a Curado.
Thanks for the heads up.
OH NO!
I just spoke with the manager of the BPS here is Memphis and he CONFIRMED that Shimano is NOT participating the reel exchange, nationwide!
Wow!
Yep.....same at the Nashville store.....I was going to get one of the high speed reels at this sale....guess I'll have to get a Revo or Pflueger
I found out this morning while ordering a new loomis. Wonder why any speculations???? I'm going to BPS Cincinnati this friday I'll see what I can't find out. I have a coupon for the prefered customers I going to put toward a new reel

Why is Pflueger supposedly the 'wrong brand'?
In-house joke dukeintex.

Get the Revo...you WILL NOT be disappointed.
I ended up getting a Daiwa Zillion because of this. I like my old Curado but the new 200 size feels a little large. I just liked the way the Zillion felt when I palmed it, so no harm done.
I hope BPS can find a solid reason for their customers as to why Shimano backed out on this event (besides money).
What is this reel trade in thing at BPS? Do i bring in old crappy reels that work and get store credit or something?
Oh well, guess I'll have to get a Cardiff elsewhere.
I think I'll still head to Kodak as I really need a set of guide-on bunks.
Perhaps Shimano didn't want people to get a discount on their reels. Gotta be some backstory there.

Not crappy reels, just old reels that you don't want. They inspect them and make sure they are in working order. If it checks out, they give you a coupon. The value of the coupon is dependent on how much the reel you purchase costs.
I can't remember all the numbers, but I know it was worth $20 for reels costing $100. I think $50 for $250.
a few months ago cabelas had 25% off all rods and reels
except SHIMANO. I guess this is a shimano thing,no discounts!
glad i use the other brand DAIWA susQbassman.
terrible news...well, good thing I belong to the Shimano AND Daiwa posse! ;D
RW, did the mgr give any reason why?
Of course I am not in marketing/sales for Shimano but this seems like a crazy move. I know BassResource.com is a small sample size but there are already numerous posts saying people will get the Zillion, Revo, etc instead. I may be wrong, but I would think Shimano is losing a fair amt of biz on this-short term and long term. A lot of us are loyal to one manufacturer but saving $50 on a $250 reel could be enough to 'try' another brand...
Sure they have a reason..and would love to hear it....
FD
GREED!!!
RIGHT ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I think it's a wrong move, they will lose popularity.
Glad I'm a DAIWA guy !
Perhaps Shimano is leveling the playing the field for all of the independent tackle shops.
I don't know what the story is, but I suspect in comes out sooner or later. My guess is that BPS and Shimano are having a business dispute. I'm pretty sure there is more to the mystery than meets the eye. We'll see.
I saw this on Tackle Tour. Maybe this has something to do with it?

My first thought was also with the Mom and Pop shops, and protecting them. More than likely something beyond my feeble mind, tho'.
Hey RW, looks like my posse's company is nicer than your posse's company

That does seem like a realist possibility.
they are just promoting their equip in a diff way, i guess.
but that doesn't account for the # of peed off people on this post :
*realistic ;D

When you are the BEST you don't worry about the rest
Shimano is VERY controlling of their product prices. They are the Loomis of the reel world. Their top shelf products must be ordered direct from Shimano and they cannot be bought from a wholesaler.
Shimano must approve all "sales" that a store wants to run on topshelf. Obviously, they have a problem with the value of the trade-in coupon versus reel price. It does give BPS a HUGE advantage over any store when they run that special.

Lets see, customers will show up, used reels in hand to get a discount along with knowing this sale is for a charitable cause. Then they'll find out Shimano is the ONLY reel manufacturer not participating.
Shooting oneself in the foot if you ask me.
Shimano may like to protect their smaller dealers, nothing wrong with that, but the PR blunder of this is unbelievable. Now customers will get an opportunity to try out the competition and then realize everyone else has caught up to Shimano and are just as good.
Too bad for them. Their loss.

I agree that Shimano is missing the boat on the trade in sale and it will hurt them with some purchasers, primarily new buyers. The trade in I believe is only good at the store, which is a small amount of reels. A lot of people are not close to a BPS and they will have plenty of places to buy online, BPS or other, and they are not gonna spend a lot of gas money to save a few bucks on a reel.
Of course, BPS can be hard to do business with as well, so I am sure it is not just a one sided problem.

Except they forgot to tell the cashiers at the KC store, they were manually entering the 25% discount for the Shimano stuff since it didn't ring up right. That is what one of the guys in fishing told me when I asked about why Shimano wasn't part of the sale. Unfortunately, I had spend my money on a Loomis rod or I would have had a couple new reels as well.
