Best Way To Hold A Spinning Rod? 2024

fishing user avatarBasshunterJGH reply :

How do you guys hold your spinning rods? I put all my fingers in front of the reel to get more leverage. I've seen guys hold it with only one finger in front. How do you hold it? All fingers in front of the reel, three, two, or one?

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

However is comfortable to you. My pinkie is the only finger behind the reel seat for me.

fishing user avatarJohn G reply :

Two in front and two in the back usually. The only spinning reel that I use is a 1000 size Shimano on an ultralight rod for Panfish so that may change with a bigger reel, bigger rod and bigger fish.

fishing user avatarOzark_Basser reply :

All of my fingers in front of the seat.

Exactly the way I do it.  I only buy rods with a foregrip even for my bass fishing.

fishing user avatarSteveo-1969 reply :

I also put all my fingers in front of the reel stem.

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

Is a comfort choice, to me. And balance.

I prefer, like blue, to only have my pinkie

behind the reel seat, typically. There are

times I will put all my fingers up, but that

is a rare thing.

Do like having my index finger on the

blank, if possible, for better feel.

fishing user avatarWIGuide reply :

I go with the standard 2 in front 2 behind. It's the most comfortable for me so I stick with it.

My brother holds it that way too. I find that way almost just as comfortable but I feel like I get way more leverage putting all fingers in front. Guys who put only one finger in front like bama bass are the worst lol. It looks like the rod is going to get ripped out of their hand every time they get a bass! :D

This is what I do too.

fishing user avatarHogsticker reply :

Depends what I'm throwing with it. If I'm tossing small cranks with it, it's two in front two in back. Tubes, jigs, Senkos and such 1 in the rear three in the front. If you have a well balanced set up it should feel good wherever you hold it. Aside from that it's just a preference thing.

Interesting. Made me think of something. Wouldn't holding the rod with 4 fingers in front make it feel better balanced?

Over time all my fingers eventually moved to the front grip. I can't say exactly when but when I was a little kid I know I held it half and half. It makessense on balance because the weight is now directly under your hand. After reading this and how many people hold it all in the front I don't understand why now a days its so hard to find a rod with a front grip bigger then a inch or two. I can't hold it that way on a UL usually as the short neck will make the bail hit my knuckles sometimes. I can be really tuff to find a spinning rod I like anymore with the absence of front grips. Lots of rods I liked and would of bought I didn't because of the front grip.

fishing user avatargeorgeyew reply :

I pull all of my fingers in front of the stem. When I started fishing. I had my pinky behind the stem. But at the end of the day I noticed that my finger would hurt where it was pressing up against the stem. After I made the adjustment, the pain went away. That's the same way that I hold it with my baitcaster too.

fishing user avatarCapt.Bob reply :

I have mine balanced to the reel I will use on it,  they're built for two in front, two behind, and balance point is set right at the line pick up on the reel, where my index finger rest. If I have to replace the reel later the same size and weight reel will be still perfectly balanced!!

Same for me, and my index finger ends up on the rod blank right in front of the foregrip.

fishing user avatarEvanT123 reply :

Split two and two or three upfront pinky behind. N

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

As many here my hand over time moved in front of the reel, nothing planned just happened all by it itself.  For me I have no wrist soreness or fatigue.  I do feel the rod is a bit better balanced but using a variety of lures the balance changes anyway, I prefer using the term comfort rather balance.  No question in my mind I get more leverage to handle fish, appreciate it more so with a larger fish on the line.  Not only is my hand forward the reel, not unusual for my hand  to be on the rod shaft for even more leverage, pulling a fish out of pylons or from underneath a boat.

I'm only interested in owning rods with an ample forgrip, don't care for the tiny ones.  Being in South Florida it's pretty easy to find an inshore rod made that way.

I know it is off topic but I love the Avatar, is that because you share the same name as the vocalist or you use that name because you like them? Mushroomhead is awesome!!!

fishing user avatarsofarfrome reply :

Two fingers both in front and behind reel seat. Seems both comfortable and functional to me.

I kinda forgot my name was Hatrix on here and now my avatar is the logo. It is just a name I have randomly used online for like 15 years probably. I do actually know Jeff personally and I just went to a benefit last weekend for his wife who has cancer. Really I only like up to X13 and anything after that is garbage. I don't even go to shows anymore since its not the same anymore. They play new stuff that none of us people who have been around want to hear and most of the old people don't even go anymore. I would only really go is Jmann was there and thats usually like halloween shows or something like that.

fishing user avatarmasterbass reply :

I hold it with all 4 fingers in front of the stem. It balances much better.

fishing user avatarFishinthefish reply :

This depends on where the balance is for me. The further the balance is up the rod the more fingers I have in front. I usually buy balancing kits and when I do it's just one finger in front.

fishing user avatar3li reply :

The way I use a spinning rod is to have my index finger in front of the reel stem and the rest of me fingers behind the stem. All based on personal preference.

fishing user avatarib_of_the_damned reply :

I hold the rod with the reel on top, and reel backwards...

I'm kidding, I've seen a few people do that and it makes me laugh every time...

I hold the rod with the split grip so to speak, 2 in front and 2 in back.

fishing user avatarBigSkyBasser reply :

Two on top and two on bottom. Ive had large northerns pull my rod out of my hand holding it any other way.

fishing user avatarRich in Co reply :

1 finger in front of the stem the others behind

fishing user avatarCDMeyer reply :

I hold Kobe with all in front if I am fishing slower. But if I fish faster I have all but one in front. I learned from Aaron Martens to keep either all or all but one in front if for feel. He knows the most about spinning gear in my mind

fishing user avatarzephyrhorn reply :

I've been fishing like Mr. Spock ("Live Long and Prosper...") nearly all the time. I think the greatest contributing factor in all of this has been the balance point of the equipment that I use. As I have aged, I now find my hand on the rod generally more forward than in years past. With the balance point of the rod almost always being well in front of the mount, I find it easier on my hands to hold the rod further towards the front to avoid finger strain.

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

I kinda wonder why some people that fish with their hand in front of the reel buy "bass" rods with no foregrip.  Walking down the aisle in the freshwater section I see very few rods that would compliment the way I hold them.  I use inshore rods for freshwater fishing, other than the foregrip I don't see any difference.

fishing user avatarFryDog62 reply :

It all about the balance, every rod/reel combo is different.  Mostly I'm a "2 and 2" guy, but will sometimes go to 3 and 1, or 1 and 3 depending on balance point.  Most people finesse fish with spinning gear so getting that perfect balance to feel bites and set the hook is key.
