Knots for Fluorocarbon leader? 2024

fishing user avatarTroy85 reply :

What would y'all recommend as far as knots for tying fluorocarbon leader to braid line?  I'm horrible with knots, so trying to get some opinions on what I should use.

fishing user avatarNathanDLTH reply :

Blood knot, simple and effective. Look it up via TacticalBassin, they are from California.

fishing user avatarYudo1 reply :

I use the alberto knot.

fishing user avatarDwight Hottle reply :

Back to back uni works for me.

Alberto for me also

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

IMHO, the simplest/easiest is the double-uni, which

I use 99% of the time. Next for me is the Alberto.

The Alberto is the easiest for me personally, 1rod1reel has a good tutorial on this knot on YouTube

fishing user avatarLionHeart reply :

FG knot.  Simple but a little time consuming to do well.  Extremely thin and strong.

I wouldn't call the FG simple... Simple implies the entire

knot is easy to tie from start to finish.

I'm pretty good at knots, and have 99.9% success with

the double-uni in both fresh and salt, but I could not get

the FG to cooperate whatsoever with thin diameter braid

and line up to 15# test.

No doubt some, like you, are adept at tying it, so kudos

to you and your success. :)

fishing user avatarAngry John reply :

The alberto is the only connection know i use.  Its easy to tie even on the water, fast and strong.  The only important part is to make sure its tight so the braid cuts into the leader material.  Never had any burn issues with it either...

fishing user avatarRuss E reply :

i made the decision to learn how to tie the  fg knot this winter. It was a long road. I started out with large braid and flouocarbon, then worked my way down.

after several failures I am now at the point that I can consistently tie 10 lb braid to 8 lb flourocarbon.

the key for me was to have something to hold the mainline tag end. holding it in my mouth did not work well.

I found this at Bass Pro.

Hook-Eze Fishing Tool - Hook Tying & Safety Device + Line Cutter - Cover Hooks on 2 Poles & Travel Safely fully rigged. Multi function Fishing Device. it attaches to your belt loop.

we will see how it goes on the water.

it is without a doubt the most streamlined and strongest knot I have ever tied. Goes through the rod guides nicely.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

The back to back uni is what I started with and it worked well, but the Alberto is a smaller knot that clears guides better and is also easy to tie, so I've switched to that.

Double uni

fishing user avatarthe reel ess reply :

Does anybody use the surgeon's for fluoro to braid? I love it for mono to braid because it's so easy. My near sight is getting bad and I can tie that in the dark. But you can't use it to join two long lines unless you want to feed the new line spool thru the knot. In that case, the double uni is my choice.

fishing user avatardrscholl14 reply :

I was using the double uni last season but had it fail on a few hooksets.  Whether it's my skills or the knot I don't know but I may have to try some of the others out after my frustrations with it last year.

fishing user avatarHookRz reply :

I use short leaders that don't pass through the guides. I've started using this knot late last season and so far it's proven to be just as tough and simpler to tie than my trusty Alberto. The Lefty Kreh knot. Takes less than  ten seconds.

fishing user avatarTroy85 reply :

I'll give these a try when i get home from work and see which one works better.....this evening under my carport should be entertaining.  If anyone buys popcorn and stops by, I'll have some chairs setup so you can watch the clown show that is me trying to learn new knots.

fishing user avatarlmbfisherman reply :

For me it depends, it would be my knot tying skills but I found that the Uni-Knot wasn't always great for me with certain lines.  For example a local brand of braid I use seems to always slip when using a double UNI.  So I would always use the Alberto Knot and haven't slipped since!  Both knots are great though, because the double uni had no issues with PP and Sufix braid for me.

fishing user avatartander reply :

Tried the FG knot but I just couldn't get it. I use the Alberto knot, easy to tie and works great.

fishing user avatar1201vilbig reply :

Blood or Alberto

fishing user avatarLxVE Bassin reply :

Alberto knot! The blood knot is too tricky for simple person like myself.

I agree 110%. Not only was I a Cub/Boy Scout as kid but my I was BSA leader thru my son getting Eagle. During this time I spent 7 years with a wilderness search & rescue group that was always used knots for simple things to verticle needs. Point is I am very comfortable with knots as I and others had to trust my knots.

However, the FG I just can't seem to get down. I suppose if I spent the time I could but there are other knots out there that for an inshore fisherman work fine.

fishing user avatarCroakHunter reply :

I tie the fg. it's the first and only leader knot I learned, so I don't know anything different as far as difficulty. I practiced a lot and tested it myself for over 3 months before I took it on the water.

fishing user avatarWay north bass guy reply :

Alberto all the way. I’ve used it for bass and Muskie/pike leaders and never once had a slip or failure at the knot.

fishing user avatarFishDewd reply :

Alberto knot has already been said... I use that or the J knot. J knot hasn't failed me yet, and is much easier than the FG knot. It's basically braiding the lines together, very strong and small.

fishing user avatarOklahoma Mike reply :

Another vote for the Alberto. Fast, easy, and reliable. Small enough to go through micro guides without issues.

+1 this is my experience exactly.

You'll see lot of guys who love the FG, and some who don't care for it, or haven't bothered to try it (I'm in the latter group).

Seems to me the consensus is the FG somewhat outperforms the Alberto in many knot tests, but haven't had a problem with the Alberto.

fishing user avatarcpvenom reply :

Alberto knot for me. I haven't sat down and mastered the FG knot yet, but a properly tied Alberto has never failed me on a fish. In any case that I've snagged and had to break off, my leader breaks near the middle, never at the knot.

fishing user avatarYumeya reply :

FG knot

fishing user avatarTroy85 reply :

I learned the Alberto last night, seems strong and small diameter.  Imma give the FG a try next and see what happens.

fishing user avatarRuss E reply :

after reading the replies here I decided to learn the Alberto knot. much easier to tie than fg knot. seems strong and is relatively compact. thanks guys.
