Ducketts Vs. Dobyns 2024

I own 4 dobyns rods and i really like all of them my buddy fishes with ducketts and he says i need to switch over i've never fished with a duckett rod but thought about getting one to try them out should i stick with dobyns or give ducketts rods a try?

Can you try your friends rods? If you like what youre using, i say stick with it. Dobyns is quality.

I like Duckett's, but knowing the reputation that Dobyn's has, I wouldn't switch. I might try one and see how you like them for your next setup.

I own a Dobyns, 13, Powell, Vendetta, Veritas, St Croix, and Kistler to name a few. Next time I buy a rod, I am getting another Kistler KLX. My favorite of the bunch.

I'd try what Arv said. Ask your buddy if you can try one out for a bit, especially if he has the model you'd be looking at.
I'm not hugely brand loyal, and I find that different brands can excel at different types of rods.

I am in the same boat. My buddy has the duckett and I fished it and loved it but would like to see a dobyns. Labor day sales coming up and I hate to make a blind purchase. You are talking about the Savy I am assuming?

Dobyn's rods are not the lightest rods on the market, designed to be well balanced with reels. Balance and durability are Dobyn's hallmarks, his reputation is built on customer satisfaction like Loomis rods. I know nothing about Ducketts other then his first generation Carrot sticks were nothing but hype and don't know anyone who fishes them.
Try the rod before you make a decision, your freind may be only looking at rod weight weight for example, not overall fish catching performance. There are a lot of good rods on the market today.
Look at the cost of ownership; lifetime warranty, rod replacement cost. If you own a first Gen Dobyn's rod it was made by Lamiglas, still in business, warranty still good. Ducketts........??

I am a dobyns guy but to be fair to Duckett he left carrot stix BECAUSE their general population rods were not up to his standard. He claimed that the rods he got on were not what the average joe was getting and didnt want to be associated with a company that was being dishonest to consumers.
"Duckett said he has severed ties with E-21 because of “strong disagreements over construction of the Carrot Stix series rods” and “because of the financial instability” of the Toronto, Canada-based company. Duckett said he believes his reputation as an angler and businessman would have been damaged had he maintained his relationship with the company."
He started his own company and took the lead designer of e21 with him and his rods have now gained a nice following...

well really just the dobyns rods in general i own three of the champion series 2 of them are the 7'3 H action i use for jigs and texas rigs and i just recently bought a 683cb for fishing jerkbaits and i really am impressed with this one i fish jerkbaits alot and this rod is exactly what i wanted i will probably get another one when they go on sale again, and the savy series rod i have is really versitle i mainly throw jigs with it but my last few trips i have used it for spinner baits and it works good for that to

thanks for all the feedback so far i'm one of those guys that can't make up his mind on anything so i just wanted to see if anyone had a strong agruement for ducketts, i do like to try out different rods thats why i was looking at duckett but it would be really hard for me to not stick dobyns i don't have one bad thing to say about them i guess everyone has their favorites

As others have noted fish your buddy's Duckett for say an hour or so then fish your champion. Rig a similar bait and to a degree a similar type of line if possible. That brief comparison should control enough variables to where you can get a basic idea of how the rods feel and perform in your hands. If you feel their is a clear winner, then that might be the direction I would go. If they both feel similar and leave you wanting more then at that point you can consider a better rod if you have the funds for it.

IMHO, you would be taking a step backwards, going from Dobyns Champion series to the Duckett rods.

Ive owned a dobyns champion and coalition, and handled the savvy and dx rods. Never used a duckett, but handled them at a fishing expo and wasnt impressed.
I definitely think a duckett is a downgrade from a dobyns rod, my two cents....

I recently broke a Duckett and based on the customer service i'm sold on them even more.
Just had to ship the chunk of the rod with the logo and model number on it. I just cut it down on my chop saw. a check for $15 bucks. And boom new rod in less than a week. Bonus i talked to a LIVE real person when i called, no crazy menu to navigate just a nice lady who answered the phone, who made sure i was taken care of.

Paul, I have Dobyns Savvy series, and 1 Champion. I also had 2 Duckett rods. Gave them both to my son. The rods were actually great rods. Just couldn't deal with those dang tiny micro guides. Anyhow, of the 2, I still preffered the Dobyns.

I've fished both and own two Dobyns Champions and have owned two Dobyns Savvy rods. I personally prefer the Dobyns rods but that only due to the fact that I can't stand the way the Duckett rods look, they're just ugly to me. Comparing the Duckett to the Savvy, same price range, the Duckett easily wins with its balance, weight, and sensitivity but they are a bit slower in action. The Ducketts are lighter than the Champions but the Champions balance well with alot of reels. If the Micro Magic rods looked like the Duckett Ghost rods or had a different color blank and color scheme, I could easily fish them and not want another rod...seeing Terry Scroggins boat flip a 10lber on one doesn't hurt either.

If you have the $$$ go with St.Croix Legend Series. You'll never regret it! Otherwise, just stick with the Dobyn rods, their quality rods.

My local bait and tackle just picked up dobyns.. and I have considered getting a savvy to compare the two rods at the same price point.. The I love my duckett though.. I am brand loyal on my reels and want to be on my rods. but I am also considering a *** *** for my froggin rod.. so i might have a bunch of everything

I love my Micro magic 7' MH. Great sensitivity and overall feel but i use it for texas rigs seeing how thats almost all i throw. Ive never used a dobyns but i do have a carrot stick and the duckett and carrot stick cannot even begin to be compared or take carrot stix into consideration when talking about duckett rods. They are on a completely different level

x2. you should be talking him into dropping his ducketts for dobyns. or save ur breath. you can lead a horse to water but can't make him drink. ducketts are nice but you have the better rods.

My buddy is supposed to be coming to fish with me next week so i'll get to check out his ducketts after all, the only real concern i had with them are the micro guides i guess it's all in what you like though. Thanks again for all the suggestions

Keep in mind, Duckett has the Macro Magic. It's basically the same rod, but with regular guides and the trim is gold over red.

In almost every category, a Duckett is going to be a downgrade from Dobyns, with very rare exception.

I once thought about switching to duckett, just because they are cheaper, then I got one, and I dumped it REAL QUICK.
Dobyns are technique driven, with many all purpose rods.
Ducketts are more all purpose rods.
I didn't like the feel, balance or actions with the Ducketts. I have been lucky enough to fish with a dobyns since I been fishing and it will stay that way.
if you look, watch and ask around, you will see breakage issue with the ducketts.......

never thrown the savvy.
most of mine are the DX.
do not get me wrong, the Duckett is a good rod and MANY MANY people love them.
if I had $150 budget to buy rods I would probably have a boat full of Ducketts.
I had gotten the one duckett I tried after a few years with the Dobyns DX, so I was a little spoiled.
I really wanted the Ducketts to work for me, as I could have gone 2 for 1 price wise in the used market.
the Dobyns do weigh more, but balances better which IMO make it fish better. I handled the duckett and dobyns side by side with the same reel. The Dobyns was like 2 maybe 3 ozs heavier on a scale, but felt lighter fishing because the Dobyns was not tip heavy at all. in this "test" the Dobyns was also 3-4 inches longer......... I do not like split handles which is an automatic strike against duckett.
So as you can see most of my opinion is based on opinion and my personal preferences. but it is an honest opinion, trying to be a fan boy or blinded by hype.
1 thing I can assure you on the Ducketts, they fish a power weak. Meaning if you normally fish jigs on a MH, you need a H in a duckett. Not a knock at all, just something you need to know and try to handle the rod before buying.

I was in this same boat. I ended up going with the Duckett because I was looking for something sensitive and loved using my buddy's Duckett. I have not used Dobyns but from everything I have read the Savvy isn't nearly as good as the Champion but it was also almost $70 more than the Duckett and Savvy. I like the split grip and how light the duckett is in my hands. With my Lews Tournament Pro Speed spool it is super light and a pleasure to fish with. I agree with Brian that the power is weaker but it still handles everything I need it for just fine. Bottom line is that everything is opinion, until you get both in your hands its tough to say, which is what makes picking a rod so difficult sight unseen. Someone needs to come up with a rod demo program like what TW has with reels.
