Rods for less than 100 bucks and reels for less than a hundred$ 2024

fishing user avatarguest reply :

Hey Fellas: for all of us that use rods and reels costing less than one hundered bucks ( Individually) WHAT DO YOU USE? HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM?

Lets not here a lot about Avids on sale etc.., there are plenty of threads for those. I don't care if it's a 10 rod or wehat just as long as the rod or reel costs less than a hundred AND YOU ACTUALYY HAVE USED IT!!!!!!!!!

fishing user avatarLakeAnnaBasser reply :

All-Star american classic. I love this rod its got good sensitivity and it even looks good.

fishing user avatarguest reply :

Yes indeed, my jig rod is a 7 ft exfast/med Classic   I love that rid too.

fishing user avatartrailboss502 reply :

i used to have a 7ft light action popping cast away($50), but it was waaay to light.... i took it back to academy and traded it for a castaway saltwater light action 7ft and man i love this rod its not too stiff, and not to light. Today i used it fishing 1/2oz spinnerbaits then switched to a tx rigged worm and it was doing some work. after tax it was right at $90

fishing user avatarstrick9 reply :

St. Croix Premier!!!! Have used them for years and love them!!! I have six of them, a couple I've had for about 12 years and they are awesome!!! I also have a couple All Star Classic's and they are nice rods but I like the Premiers better.

fishing user avatarLAO162 reply :

I started last year with a 66MF BPS Extreme Spinning.  I think it is a good, solid rod.

Later in the season I upgraded to a Browning Midas 2-piece 66MF when it was <$100 on sale.  I think the Midas was a huge upgrade over the Extreme.  Much lighter and more sensitive.

fishing user avatarjdw174 reply :

Most of my rods were bought when they were cheaper than today's cost.  I have several AllStar IM6 rods that were top of the line when I got them and still sold for less than a C-note.  Likewise my Falcon LowRiders and my David Fritts Crankin' Stiks by Browning.  The only reels I have that retailed over $100 new are two early model Castaics, and even then I got them at cost.  I still use a couple of the Quantum Iron reels, along with two Browning Midas 6.  Never had a problem with any of them.

fishing user avatarBig T reply :

My favorite rod is a 7ft. Mh Shimano Clarus Spinning -$69. it is a tough rod, it has been used for everthing from inshore saltwater to bass fishing. My favorite spinning reel is an older Symtre 4000. It has a smaller frame than the newer ones. Anohter reel that I like is hte Plueger Trions. I have two of them that I use for ultralite panfishing. I just picked up a 5'4" Allstar/Abu Garcia Light action combo lastnight for $49.99 after the $10 coupon I had. I can't wait to use this in the panfish down here. If I like this Abu Reel it may replace my old Symtre that is starting to wear out, or I am buy another Trion. Alot of reel for the money.

fishing user avatarMALTESE FALCON reply :

I'm very pleased with my Quantum Energy PT Rods $99.99 and my Quantum KVD Signature Series Rods $79.99 (BPS usually puts these on sale for $49.99). Both are fairly light and sensitive.

fishing user avatarpowerman970 reply :

I have been a big All Star fan for a couple of years.  At around $80 they are tough to beat.  I just wonder how the quality will be affected now that they have been bought by Shakespeare.  As far as reels go I have found it really easy to find a decent spinning reel for under $100 but baitcasters get a little more difficult.  I think the best cheap find for me was a few Pinnacle limiteds that I bought from Academy about 2 years ago.  Nice reels for the price but I can't find anymore of them.

fishing user avatardodgeguy reply :

i'm a big fan OF BPS RODS.AT THAT PRICE POINT I THINK THE EXTREME IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BEAT.at that price i think the pfluegr narrow spool trion or the bps rick clunn reels are hard to beat.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

I am pretty sure Muddy you and I both are big fans of the Fenwick HMX, in fact they are the only <$100 rods that I kept when I upgraded to St Croix's and Kistlers this winter, thats how good I think they are.  I have nothing bad to say about the BPS Bionic Blades, Extreme's and Cranking Stick I have used either, all great rods, and when they are on sale are probably the best "bang for the buck" in rods. I have also been really impressed with the Shimano Compre, I fished with a freinds a few times this fall, and find my self fondling them every time I go to the tackle store. And for a real cheap rod, you can't beat a good old Berkley Lightning rod. In fact I am thinking about picking one or 2 up to toss in truck for pond fishing.

fishing user avatarguest reply :

Hey WW2: I bought one of  those Cabelas Gold Label spinning rods ( re 49) for 20 bucks, that is the rod I keep behind my truck seat, also a great pond rod for the money.

fishing user avatarmackkie reply :

Pflueger supreme spinning reel is sweeeet, $99.

Only magnesium reel for under $300

fishing user avatarmattm reply :

Muddy,

You should wait a while save up another 100.00 bucks and buy a Shimano Curado and St. Croix Legend Tournament series. Much better than anything in the 100.00 class.

Your blood is boiling right. I'm just messing with you, muddy. I know how much you love post like that. ;D ;D. I'll go with All-Stars and a Citica, barely over at $119.00, under after 30.00 rebate.  Sorry if the rebate breaks the on sale rule you set up.

fishing user avatarThe Next KVD reply :

For rods can't beat the Original Falcons or the St. Croix Premiers.  As for reels Shimano Cruxis $99.99 and get a decent rebate until i think end of march?

fishing user avatarGrey Wolf reply :

Pflueger Supreme & Sahara are two sub 100.00 reels that I use and like very much.

fishing user avatarStasher1 reply :

None of my reels and only one of my rods were over $100.

Shimano Symetre 2500 ($80) on a 6'6" M Shim. Crucial ($130)

Daiwa Capricorn XTC baitcaster ($80) on a 6'6" MH BPS Extreme ($59)

Daiwa MegaForce baitcaster ($60) on a 7' MH BPS Extreme ($59)

Nothing flashy or high-end, but all decent functional gear.

fishing user avatarLAO162 reply :

Muddy, how do your AllStars compare you old Techna AV?  Please feel free to be long-winded?  Also, have you tried the AllStar Platinum compared to the rest of the AllStar line.

Growing up Fewick was the"king" of rods for us.  However, I've recently realized that my favorite rod was a Shimano Sensilite.  Thus, I'm thinking of going the Shimano route.  However, an AllStar / Revo combo seems to be a great value...

Were there any specific attributes for the AllStars that got you to switch your allegience  ;)

Thanks, Leon

fishing user avatarQuinn reply :

BPS graphite series 7' heavy....$29 + tax (most I have ever spent on a new rod)

BPS  telescoping 6.5' med heavy....$20 + tax

Shakespear durango 6.5' med heav....$6.99 + tax

Many others $2 - $10 no tax at flea markets and yard sales

Pinnacle platnim plus bait cast .... $39 (most I have ever spent on a new reel)

Shakespear durango (3 of them) $3.97 + tax

Others $.50 - $10 no tax at flea markets and yard sales.

I have caught some large fish and some 20# catfish and they are still holding up well for me

I love to fish but I don't compete or anything so you can take my oppinion (and my tight budget) with a grain of salt  ;)

fishing user avatarcart7t reply :

Rods:

All Star Classics and or the TAS rods.  Outstanding value.

Fenwick HMG - Great rods for the price.

BPS Extremes, when on sale are also great rods.

Berkley Lightning rods, still one of the great rods for the price point.

Reels:

BPS Extreme, another great reel when on sale.

Revo S - Well, now they're over the $100 mark but you can still get them brand new on Ebay for under $100.  Great reel.

fishing user avatardave reply :

Shimano Symetre

fishing user avatarJake. reply :

Revo S

fishing user avatarHellbilly reply :

I bought the Rick Clunn baitcaster combo from Bass Pro a couple of weeks ago. This combo is $150. I have the 7 ft medium/heavy crankbait rod and the 7.1:1 speed reel filled with P-Line 14 Lb. braid. I love this set up.

fishing user avatarRiskKid. reply :

I have a Shimano Sahara reel on a BPS Extreme rod that I use alot.

Truthfully I like it as much as some of my more expensive set ups.

fishing user avatarPond Hopper reply :

I have 3 St. Croix Premieres that have been a good rod for what I paid(half price).  Also a shimano symetre which makes fishing spinning tackle less of a chore.  I also own a Bionic Blade I got from senko77 that is a hell of a frog rod and is also tough.  I have a problem sticking them in the ceiling fan or hitting a wall and it has still not had any problems.

Hey Leon: I will PM you, if I asked others to keep it under a hundred I shouldn't do it myself ;)

fishing user avatarJeff H reply :

I have a old Shimano Convergence 6' MH rod I still like to use.  I think the Convergence is a great rod for it's WAY under $100 price tag.

Getting close to the $100 mark is the Shimano Compre and I like the one I have.  Would definitely consider another, except I just like the Crucial's better now.  Still, for under a $100 the Compre is a good choice.

I have 2 Gander Mtn spinning reels (which are Pflueger as I understand)  I have a GS35 and a GST30 and they are excellent reels for $39 and $49 respectively that I paid for them, actually quite unbeleiveably good for the price.  Will possibly be getting one more soon. (I have been very impressed with what I've seen of the Pflueger's lately)

I have a Cabela's Prodigy 1500 spinning reel and the Prodigy baitcaster ($65 each on clearance but still retailed for $99).  Against the rules of this thread, I have not used these yet but am as impressed as one can be by a product without actual use of it, especially the baitcaster.

fishing user avatarLAO162 reply :

Muddy, thanks for keeping me (and my wallet) in line ;)

I should add that I think my Daiwa Exceler is a fine reel.

fishing user avatarguest reply :

Hey just don't go on me, I am still learning. I asked for this thread, becAUSE THIS IS THE BRACKET I SHOP IN MOST AND I KNOW OTHERS COULD USE THE VAST EXPERIENCE HERE

fishing user avatarhamer08 reply :

I like the BPS extreme combos. It is hard to beat for the price, most of mine were $99 for the combo.  All mine I bought online and I like the wide range of options.

I'll second the gander mountian guide series rods/reels. They do use rebadged Pflueger reels and our local one offers great customer service. They offered to exchange a yr old reel without a box or reciept. I typically buy these as combo also, usually $99-$129.

I personally prefer to have more combos (specific to the type of fishing, lure, gear ratio, power, action, etc). Than have fewer slightly higher quality equipment. I would rather have six $100 combos than two $300 combos.

good luck

fishing user avatar.ghoti. reply :

I use a $100 BPS Rick Clunn rod; got it for $80 on sale. They go on sale every year. It's a 7' medium power worm/dropshot model. Not sure why they call it a worm rod. It's a lousy worm rod. The tip is way too soft to be a worm rod. But, it is a great crankbait rod. Soft tip, with good backbone, SIC guides, excellent real seet, comfortable over-sized cork grip, and a nice EVA butt cap.

Another $100 BPS rod that I got for $80 is a 6'9" med-light Pro XPS Finesse baitcast rod. If you want an affordable baitcast rod to throw unweighted plastics, this is the one. And I don't mean Senko's. A Senko is heavy enough to throw on just about any bass rod. I mean Flukes, unweighted tubes and worms, etc. A very light rod with SIC guides, the excellent real seet and over-sized cork grip. I paired this rod up with  Johnny Morris Signature series baitcaster, and have pretty much eliminated spinning gear. Everything I used to throw with spinning gear gets thrown with this setup.

These are both fine $100 rods. They are both on sale every year, and are contenders in my best bang for the buck sweepstakes.

Cheers,

GK

Rods:

Shimano 6'6" Compre MH Spinning normally $89.00, got it for $50 something - It is tough to beat at that price; hardloy guides, IM8 graphite if it means something to some.

Lamiglas Competitor 6'6" M - MSRP is now $112 but most places will sell it between $60-80.00.  - The backbone for this rod in incredible not to mention excellent sensitivity.  It has more backbone than the two Shimanos listed above. Even 6# bass among wooden pilings don't stand a chance against it, and it can be used to toss 1/4 oz cranks (rated for 3/8 - 1) easily and works great for t-rigs. It is the definition of a all-around rod.

Shimano Clarus Clarus M Casting, $59.00 - Also another good value, good rod. AL Oxide guides, and IM7 graphite.

Berkley 7' M Cherrywood Rod Spinning - At < $20.00, I found this rod to be unbelieveably sensitive for a "low end" rod. It is worthy of feeling the the nibble while dropshotting.

Tica TC4 6' M action rod - Just bought it and haven't used it much yet, but for $15, I am not complaining.

Other thoughts - These are rods in my arsenal and with the excpetion of the Lamiglas and Tica, they are all 2-piece rods! Two Piece out of necessity to fit in the trunk. At this time, the Shimanos are my "beater"/trunk rods that I keep in the car because you never know when a fishing opportunity might present itself.

Reels:

Shimano 2500 Symetre - Shoot.  Need I say more?  ;D

Rapala 6Sxi Spinning Reel, size 20 - Awesome reel that normally costs $50 back in the day but I scored it for $34.00.  Use it as my main reel for dropshotting.

Pflueger Trion Casting - At $99, this reel is just about on par with the Curado BSF but can hold more line. It has never failed me and it has battled salmon that would make a 6# bass look like a dink. It happens to be running like the Energizer bunny.

Shimano Cardiff 301A - Awesome round reel at this price. If I use it for bass fishing, I like to use it for cranks because it has a 5.x:1 ratio. It just seems "easier" to crank and "feels" better to me when compared to my 6.x:1 reels, including one with HE Gearing.

My other stuff exceeds the $100 barrier. I won a GL2 Loomis and scored a Crucial for $59, but I won't count them because they normally wouldn't be under $100.

fishing user avatarfish-fighting-illini reply :

For spinning reels

Pflueger President $59

Shimano Symmetre $79

Pflueger Medalist $79

All of these can be had for less on E-bay with a little effort

For Rods

BPS Extremes are easy to get as they go on sale so often lesst than $100

Berkley Lightning rod good rod for the money $20 to $35 ( and you don't have to cry if it breaks)

Berkley Cherry wood no very sensitive but it got the job done $20

Shakesphere Excursion probably a piece of crap rod but I had fun with the one that I had. My buddy slammed the door on it or I would still use it. I think it retails for $12.99 I'm going to buy another just for an " up yours " to the bait - monkey
