Seeking the perfect squarbill rod 2025

fishing user avatarburrows reply :

Can’t find the rod I want! I’m picky these are the specs I’m looking for 6’9 or 6’10 graphite medium, moderate fast, handle 14 inches. Preferably very preferably  a crankbait specific rod. 200$ budget? Any suggestions guys? Thanks.

fishing user avatarkschultz76 reply :

Checkout the Megabass Orochi XX Spinnerbait Special, while not advertised as a crank specific rod it's an awesome rod for anybsquarebill over 3/8 oz and is great around cover. Very versatile for spinnerbaits, larger jerkbaits, topwater, even light jigs or swim jigs. But abouve your price range but an awesome stick.

Also so I like the Kistler KLX CRT series and they come in a 6'9" MH. Kistler's having a sale right now that makes them a great deal, 20% off $199 or more, you'll see the discount in your cart. The KLX are also very versatile and will do more then square bills for sure.

I really like the Dobyns Champ 705CB glass for squarebills. Used a lot of squarebill rods and that is by far my favorite.

fishing user avatarburrows reply :

I’ve considered the spinnerbait special Levante by megabass it’s in my budget but I’ve heard it’s tip heavy and in need of an upgrade, as for St. Croix a mhm sounds good but I’m concerned that it won’t ballance out with a chronarch mgl as I’ve had this problem before with some St. Croix Rods and the legend is to expensive, glass well I have a mojo bass target cranker and I like the give that a glass rod gives but I hate not being able to feel every little thing I bang up on. The rod I been looking at is the zodias 6’10 mf but even that rod I’m not comfortable with a 15 inch handle and it’s not cranking specific it’s a delema I’m picky and won’t spend more than 200 on a rod. I hear custom rods start at 200 so I’ve never spent more than 200$ on a rod and I don’t ever want to.

Denali makes the kovert lt a 6’10 crankbait rod mf for like 150 bucks but I don’t hear much about Denali kind of on the fence about them.

Sounds like you have some really specific requirements and hopefully you find what you're looking for. Not sure you could do it for 200 but you could always go custome.

Heres the Kistler KLX and this would be under 200 with their current sale. I have this rod and like it a lot, but do wish the handle was an inch longer behind the reel seat. Sounds like you prefer a shorter handle so that may not be a problem for you.

Dobyns Champ 685c might work for you too, it's often talked about as a Jerkbait rod but could probably work for squarebills.

Some important questions to ask:

What "kind" and size of squarebills do you mostly throw? I like different rods for different sized baits.  I also like different rods for different "wobbles".

What kind of cover do you crank? A good  squarebill rod for grass is going to be a different beast than a good wood/rock/hard cover squarebill rod.

Where are you casting? Under overhanging bushes, docks or other tight spots? Making long bomb casts down rip rap banks, over grass flats, down long grass lines, or other large areas trying to cover water?

fishing user avatarburrows reply :

I’ll be using it for 1/4 ,3/8 1/2 ounce the heaviest squarebills mainly also light 3/16 to 1/4 ounce spinnerbaits I’ll be throwing them in grass and mainly muddy structures some rock but mainly muddy structures under trees and at docks tight spots that’s why I want the 6’9  6’10 the handle or butt end of the rod I prefer 14 because 15 bugs me a little when casting from a sitting position on a kayak or even just standing. I have a mhm 7 St. Croix for most of my crankbait applications and spinnerbaits but this will be for the lighter baits and to get in tight spots make those more accurate cast.

fishing user avatarkschultz76 reply :

For me I typically wouldn't throw 1/4 and 1/2 oz square bills on the same rod. Those lighter baits would be on a more Medium powered stick and the heavier on a Medium Heavy. For those lighter cranks I'd look at the Medium in the KLX. I throw those size lures on my Orochi XX Jerbait Special. The KLX MH can throw 1/4 but it's not ideal.

fishing user avatarburrows reply :

I will throw mainly 3/8 ounce. And lighter. Half ounce Excaliburs sometimes.

fishing user avatarkschultz76 reply :

It's been awhile since I threw a 1/4 on the KLX or the Jerkbait Special, it's within their specs. They'll both handle 3/8 or 1/2 very well.

fishing user avatarsmalljaw67 reply :

Hammer Rod, 6'9" MH which is a moderate fast action. That rod is perfect for what you want to do, they fish about 1/2 power lighter than the rating, so the MH will have enough power to pull a square bill through cover and over rocks but still have a good tip with enough forgiveness for fighting the fish on treble hooks. Remember, that rod isn't in their crankbait series, their blanks all have a mod-fast action which make it very versatile and from owning one myself I can tell you that it is a really good rod.

fishing user avatarburrows reply :

Yes finally something I think will work the hammer rods checked them out online and I like what I’m seeing so far I think the 6’9 medium or medium heavy have a moderate action that I think I’m looking for so far I like these rods the price is good. I’m considering these no doubt. The downside is that there crankbait specific rods all start at the 7 foot plus.

This ^.  I have 3 rods I use for squarebills, only one of which is a cranking rod. For grass, I like a fast MH high(ish) mod. For wood, rock, rip and such, a MH with a deeper bend (slower) and more tip, not unlike a spinnerbait rod. And lastly, all that's required to turn a 15" handle to a 14" handle is a hacksaw.

You don't want the crankbait specific model for square bills. The medium heavy will fish like a strong medium which will give you enough power and forgiveness and since the rod is a mod fast action you will have some backbone to pull the crank through cover and the forgiveness to fight the fish, it would be an awesome rod for and shallow crank from surface to 6'. The other thing is the length will also make it a good topwater rod and it will be awesome for those heavier jerkbaits.

I toss them on my 5'9" MH Lew's TP1. I routinely fish small waters and often from a canoe or kayak.

fishing user avatarburrows reply :

Ultimatlely the perfect rod for me would have to be custom. I won’t be going that route however, I think I’m deciding on a dobyns champ 685c. Thank you guys for your help I’ll keep you posted...

Well I just couldn’t get myself to pay more than 200 bucks for a rod I ended up getting a gloomis e6x crankbait rod in 7’ medium moderate fast. I wanted 6’10 but oh well. The 13 3/4 inch butt is good. Ive heard it will ballance out nicely with a chronarch. One day I am going custom make my own rod with my own specs that’s the way to go.

fishing user avatarburrows reply :

Doesn’t seem like anyone’s impressed here, did I make a bad choice? The reason I didn’t go with zodias was because of the 15 inch butt I also  already  have one in the spinning model. I didn’t get the hammer rods because of the butt was 14 1/2 also I didn’t like that when I called I had to leave a message and that made me wonder about there service, actually got the Denali kovert 610 crankbait model but I’m sending it back today, paying an extra 20 bucks for the e6x? Koverts ok but the guides seem to have a bad rap and for an extra 20 I can avoid that problem. I’ll post picks later.... ??????

A Loomis E6X 7M cranking rod is going to be way to soft for square bills, at least in my opinion. The E6X has a 3/4" shorter butt section but for a rod that soft to fish square bills a longer butt would be better because it will help with leverage due to the action of that rod. The rod you got is a mod-fast action but it is a 3 power Loomis cranking specific rod, the tip section will flex into the backbone faster than a full moderate action but on that power rod the backbone is too forgiving, you'll think you have a full moderate power rod. I mentioned here once before that I fish with a guy that likes the E6X series, he has the exact rod you have and he uses them for small shallow cranks only, a DT-6 is the sweet spot and it doesn't have enough to pull a square bill over 1/4oz over cover, it is rated to 5/8oz but at 1/2oz it'll feel like you are at max.

Oh yeah definitely not for squarebills now that I have it in hand I realize that, but I love the rod and plan on getting another for now I will continue to use my mojo spinnerbait rod to rip squarebills out of grass and cover.  This rod definitely has its place in my arsenal for those 1/4 ounce cranckbaits and 3/8 ounce cranks I love it. But I will continue on my search for that perfect squarebill rod.

I would have def checked out the Dobyn's Champ 684/5cb. I've got one for jerkbaits specifically. I've used it for shallow cranks and it's amazing. I personally would recommend the 705cb graphite, but if you want the shorter rod, that 684/5 is just what you would need, from what I've read here.

fishing user avatarAngry John reply :

You seem to have a few st croix rods have you tried a 66mf avid for your application.  I love mine for 1.5 and 1.0 strike king kvd's.  Also pulls double duty as my jerkbait rod.  Don't want 100 rods in the yak.

fishing user avatarburrows reply :

Going to have to wait probably won’t be buying another rod till tax returns maybe? I think I’ve reached my limit for this year. Definitely reached my limit!

fishing user avatarChance_Taker4 reply :

I have two squarebill rods that I interchange often depending on the situations. I throw a 6'9" M/MF Carrot Stick Pro TI or if I am trying to bomb it as far as I can I use a 7'1" M/F Abu Garcia Villain

I too thought the Orochii XX SS was a great option.
