Hey guys, I use braid to leader for most of my applications. I’ve used original power pro and kastking super power braid (both 4 carrier) with no issues. Well I got a new rod/reel and decided I wanted to try an 8 carrier, in hopes that it would be smoother and quieter coming through the guides. I purchased Daiwa J braid X8 when I saw how low the price was. I have found that it IS quiet, but sometimes during a cast the spool will stop quickly like a backlash, but there is no overrun on the spool. Has anyone else had this issue with 8 carrier braids? Is it just the J braid? Or is it a coincidence as I have never seen this before. Thanks in advance. All lines in question are 40 and 50 lb test.
I had the same problem with J-braid, plus it had abominable abrasion resistance. I thought I had it spooled too loose, and it was digging in, so I re-spooled under pressure. It worked .... for one cast. Then it was same old, same old. I threw it away. I have since decided to not use braid. Presto! Problems disappeared.
If you beat me thoroughly about the head and shoulders and MADE me use a braided line, it would be Sufix 832. But you'd first have to pry my Trilene Big Game out of my hands, and that wouldn't be easy. ???????? ???????? jj
I’ve been wanting to try 832. Other than this I’ve had absolutely no issues with braid. I love my fluoro too, but the memory and cost can drive me crazy, and braid lasts longer.
Been using J braid 8 carrier since the day it came out. Never had a problem. I think it's one of the best braids. It's the only braid I trust at the moment.

Agreed. And the price is right.
J braid is super limp and requires more thumb or break to stop that.
I tried J braid and found it hateful stuff. Very limp and the braiding is very loose. Didn't stay on the reels for very long. Cheap for a reason. I find slightly stiffer braids work better for most applications. I use 4 strand for the heavy flipping type applications, original power pro is as good as anything else, 8 strand for standard spinning applications, Spiderwire stealth smooth 8 in yellow is as good as anything and ygk 4 strand for the ultra finesse rods with 0.2 to 0.6PE. The 4 strand thin braids are slightly stiffer and more robust, which helps with the very fine stuff.
I don't use braid for med and med heavy casting applications, but have in the past and find the spiderwire or 832 OK and quieter than the heavier 4 strands, but a bit limp, even in 30-50lb thicknesses.

Every braid in 8 strand has a tendency to cut into the spool. Heck even 4 strand will when you crack em hard!
The 8 strand shines for us on spinning reels. The casting distance is second to none. Found it is more of a headache for casting.
I’m wondering if braids that have a coating on them may be less susceptible to slipping down into the spool. Any thoughts? I just wanted to give the J Braid a chance because of the price tag but if this continues, I’ll be switching before spring. Most likely to 832, I’ve heard great things.

As I mentioned, it’s not actually backlashing/bird-nest. I have plenty of thumb control. It’s more like the line may be slipping or digging down into the spool, causing it to catch. I thought I was saving money, but I’ve already lost the equivalent cost in baits just flying off the end of the line.
Not sure what thickness braid you're using, but 30-40lb is minimum with 1/4 to 1oz, med to med heavy type gear. Thinner braid will dig into the spool and cause backlashes and snap offs. You can use finer braid with lighter outfits and shallow spools, but it's all about balancing your gear.

If you look its looping at the start of the cast. I had the same issue because it's so limp. Went back to Sufix 832.

I mentioned in the original post that I’m using 40 lb and 50 lb braids, J Braid X8 being 50. I’ve used other brands in these sizes with no issues.

Just picked up some 50 lb 832 today actually. Thanks.
Lol, one thing that's very consistent with us fisherman.....that we're all different and experience very different things.
I won't use anything but braid and never had an issue in many years other than front treble romance, fixed with leader.
So Many J braid haters. ????
It's all good. Another good braid is Cortland Braid. Very good stuff and does not loose color. You can only buy it direct however.
I have 20-50 lb Daiwa J8 on 7 bait casters. I thought everything was just fine with it, but now that I've found out it's horrible, sayonara!

???????? By all means, fish whatever you like. I’m not even suggesting it’s bad, just wanted to see if anyone has had a similar experience with it. I’ve been going through and trying several brands of fluoro and braid to determine what I like and what I don’t.

I hate flouro in ant brand
I have dried 30lb J-Braid on a few different reels and always took it off in short order. I was having the same problem the OP was having, the braid would dig into it's self super easily and my lures would go flying. I had one PopMax come off twice in a single day, was able to save it both times but snagging it with a plopper.
I moved the line over to a heavier spinning combo and really like it for that application, it casts wonderfully and leader knots seem to hold very well in it.

I haven’t had too many issues with fluoro other than memory. I liked Seaguar but it stretches as much as mono. I like trilene 100% but it has more memory. Shop Karl’s sent me a free spool of Googan fluoro and 50% off another. Everyone hates vicious but I just spooled it on one of my casting reels to try it out for myself, so we’ll see.
I’m also a J-Braid user for a long time from 15lb spinning up to 30lb baitcaster.

i think you experienced SnapBack where your spool shoot braid out faster than lure can pull result the line running back and dig into spool since Jbraid is super soft and light. When you use soft braid, the cast control need to be tighter a little more.
I do have that problem from time to time with my 30lb Jbraid especially when I forget and swing to the fence.
If you want somewhat stiffer but soft 832 is the way to go.
Another trick when spool soft braid I normally spool up to 2/3 - 3/4 full that way you have more control of line running out with your thumb more.

I haven't had that experience with AbrazX, but I've heard that InvizX has a lot of stretch.

InvizX is what I used as well. I’ve now spooled up 16lb Sunline Sniper on my new Tatula CT and I have to say I love it. Low memory, supple, very thin diameter, and good knot strength so far. Still have the vicious spooled up on another reel but I haven’t even casted with it yet due to my satisfaction with the sunline.
Love Diawa J braid, dyneema is soooo much smoother than spectra, ive had zero issues & it's my go to!

The more I get used to it, the less issues I have with the J Braid. I had to adjust my brakes slightly higher than I would normally, but haven’t noticed any loss in casting distance. All of my spools and brakes are loose by most people’s standards anyway.
