Monofilament Issues? 2025

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Hey everyone I just started bass fishing and restrung my shimano spinning real up with some fresh trilene big game green 12 pound mono. I've ised this line for years fishing salt, but generally was using sinkers since I did a lot of pier fishing. I noticed since I'm throwing a lot of soft plastics with no weight, my line wants to twist or even wind knot. And sometimes tangle coming off the spool. It's not under/over spooled I've used it for years. I'm assuming it's due to throwing plastics with no weight. Any help or advice and suggestions is great thanks!

fishing user avatarCrestliner2008 reply :

Big Game is pretty tough stuff.....and pretty stiff for lighter applications such as what you are trying to do. I'd suggest you tone down the toughness a bit and try some XT instead. IF you are dead set on using mono. If you want a better spinning experience, try some 10# test Power Pro instead, with a 10# test 3' fluorocarbon leader. You won't go back to mono after that. :)

I've tried doing some reading on it. What is the huge advantage to not going with mono and why do ya need to fish a mono leader when Ya go to braid?

Using a leader with braid is  not really mandatory. I myself don't use one and I use 10# braid on my spinning set up. I think if you want to use a leader or just go with straight braid , either choice works and you will catch fish . Having a clear leader is a confidence thing , if it works for you that's what matters...

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Yeah I'm considering trying a braid. I tried spyderwire years ago and had bad wind nots and issues. But I'm running I to that now with mono lol

fishing user avatarnew2BC4bass reply :

I use 8# and 12# Big Game on some of my baitcast reels.  It isn't a line I would use on my spinning reels.  It is a little too stiff for my liking.  I prefer mono for most of my fishing.  I would look for a softer line and down size it if your fishing area would allow it.  I am a fan of Sufix Elite and Sunline Super Natural, but used Trilene XL for a good many years with no problems.  Switched because I wanted to try something different.   Hopefully 10# would work for you.  Most of my spinning reels these days carry 8# mono.  But then I don't fish in much cover with them preferring a baitcast reel whenever possible.

fishing user avatarTywithay reply :

That line is too thick, with too much memory, to be used on a spinning reel.

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

I plan to eventually upgrade to a bait caster but will run my spinning real for now. I could down size to 10 pound with no issues. I am familiar with mono so it's a comfortable thing. I guess I could try finding a less stiff mono

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

What do yall recommend? Honest good options for a spinning reel

fishing user avatardeep reply :

What size reel, and does the rod load well with the bait? 6# Big Game would be good for a standard 2500 size reel.

fishing user avatarTywithay reply :

I would lise the big game and go with 8lb XL. It's much softer and still breaks at over 10lb. 12lb Big Game is closer to 17lb test.

I would also go w/8# XL. XT and Big Game are to stiff for my liking, even on casting reels. I like XL or Stren Origianl 12# for all of my casting applications.

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Ok excellent thanks for all the help guys. I'll be ditching the big game im looking into the xl now

I agree with this. You really need a softer line and drop your diameter as well.

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Just saw the xl I'll be picking up some 8 pound xl this weekend

Which ever mono you choose - be sure to spool the line on the reel correctly.

There is a right & a wrong way to do it.  It involves having the line come off the spool of line the same direction (rotational speaking) as it's going on your reel.

The wrong way will fill your spool with line that is very twisted and seriously unmanageable.

There's plenty of info every where how to do it right.

If you already know how, then please use this post as a friendly reminder.

I gotta look that up, I've actually always thrown the spool in a bucket of water and strung it up done it that way since I was young. I love learning!

Well if it went on "backwards" - I'm willing to bet that's at least 1/2 your problem.

Yup, a excellent tip/ reminder A-Jay!

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Just watched a youtube vid, that's probably a lot of my problem. I've also always held the line tight against the pole with a rag while applying it to put some tension on it as it spools I probably shouldnt be doing this either wow lol

fishing user avatarTywithay reply :

Reeling it through a rag isn't a bad idea, as it will wipe away anything on it from the factory. Don't know if I'd recommend holding it up against the rod while doing it though.

fishing user avatarcyclops2 reply :

I would ask for a prewritten reply for questions like this. It took me several minutes to describe watching the coils coming off the spool & all the other steps.

I don't think that Big Game is available in #6.

fishing user avatardeep reply :

Yes, I think you're right. my mistake. The OP's second favorite mono in 6# test then.

fishing user avatarThe Wilkin reply :

x2 for trying the 10 pound power pro. It's amazing you can cast farther and don't have to worry about memory.

fishing user avatarDaveT63 reply :

I personally love Sunline Supernatural mono.  I fish 12# on my 2500 size spinning reels quite often with very little twist/memory problems.
