Okay guys... I just purchased sol and have been looking for a rod to pair it with. Well I want something that matches the reel so I was considering a carrot stix, but decided not to with all the negative reviews I've been seeing. And that's when I stumbled upon the Lamiglas Excel micro. So what I want to know is, have any of you guys used this line of rods? How are they? Should I get the ML or M? I'm also open to any other suggestions.

I have not used the lamiglass line of rods but the phenix recon 713 or 714 would match it well both in performance and looks without damaging the wallet. The dobyns champion extremes would also look nice but nearly double the price. Lots of models in the dx line up that would equate to a medium light or medium. I have an a custom alphas on the 742 it is a great rod for baits between 3/16 and 5/16 ounce.

Yeah agreed, if you have the cash get a dobyns DX rod, that's the way to go but in your price point with those rods you listed try a savvy.

The Sol/Alphas are my favorite line of reels. I have them mounted on everything from a ML to a H/XF. The Lamiglas should be a fine paring. I've not used the Excels, but in my experience Lami rods fish about 1/2-1 power heavier than the rating. So it basically comes down to what you want the rod to accomplish. I would suspect that the ML fishes more like a M. Seems like it would make a nice rod for small senko baits, shakey heads, and light jigs/t-rigs. If you're gonna be throwing 3/8oz and up more often, I'd go with the M.

Put it on whatever rod you like. I have three Alphas/Sols, and they're well suited to many applications - spinnerbait, cranks, finesse, topwater, slash baits....

Might want to take a look at the Powell Inferno, if you want to match the reel up with a rod. Search around I have seen a thread or two on this particular rod on this forum.....Also the new Tatula rods might be something to consider. Both are in the ball park price wise of the Lamiglas

I have a 715 in the recon line and absolutely love it... The dx742 is a good cross between a ML and a Medium. What types of baits and weight ranges did you have in mind? I use mine for senkos, flukes, ikas, hydras, 3/16 oz drops shots and shakey heads and finesse jigs that are 1/4 oz plus trailer. Anything over a 1/4 or under 3/16 oz would be a different rod for me. That rod would you run you about $265 shipped if you find a retailer offering 20% off. They are some of the most visually stunning rods out there especially for reels with an orange finish and plenty sensitive for feel techniques!

if you have the money to do so, then the DX series is the best you will feel in sensitivity and balance to me. I have a DX 744 with a core 51 and that thing feels like air. Hmm, to be honest I haven't really decided what I will use it for, but for now I'm going to say weightless plastics and dropshot. So most of the time my lure weight shouldn't be over 1/4oz. And yes, after looking at it over a few times, it does look like a pretty amazing rod that would match the sol very well haha. Just curious but how does the sensitivity of the champion extremes compare to the nrx?

Well, I've never fished a dobyns so I'm just not really sure if I want to spend that much on it haha. Not to mention I just bought an aldebaran, and have already ordered tons of stuff from all the labor day sales haha. But if I do I will let you know haha.

Haha I use all dobyns rods and have fished with all the phenix lines and powell since I have friends sponsored by them, same for kistler and I won't ever switch from dobyns. I think you should give them a try, you may be hooked. By the way, do you fish lefty or righty? And where do you usually purchase reels from?

I can fish both, but have pretty much got rid of all my righties for lefties... I purchase them anywhere the price is good haha, but most of the time its either here or tackletour. You just have to check frequently haha.

Haha I do check, I just picked up a core and want an aldebaran so let me know if you are ever willing to part with it or any reels for that matter. I've fished the nrx and it is mind blowing, so maybe that's the one rod ive used that's better than my DX line. I haven't touched a JDM rod though since I havent had a chance to. I like the nrx but I'm a dobyns guy and the DX feels in sensitivity like a glx to me but a bit better, more balanced and lightweight IMO.

Yeah, I paired up my aldebaran with my nrx 893, and it is amazing haha. Although I'm still gonna save up for some upgrades for the reel and see if that can make it even better haha. Me neither, although I would like to try some megabass jdm rods. May even pick up a Destroyer X7 if I can get the cash for it haha. I have heard many positive reviews on dobyns, especially about the DX. I might really have to get one haha.

The DX is a fantastic rod. I'm actually planning on a megabass destroyer x7 or an orochi x4. One heck of a combo with that nrx and aldebaran haha. Oh and what lakes do you fish around here?

St. Croix's LEC68MXF is a phenomenal rod to pair with a Sol...the balance is really something. I use this combo for finesse jigs, t-rigs, and weightless Senkos, and am very happy.

Most of the time I fish Eastman and Hensley and sometimes I fish along the San Joaquin river.

I usually fish all the lakes aroumd here but if I'm on foot I go to sycamore island a lot. Last week I pulled a 4lb spotted bass out of there and my buddy got a 6lb largemouth. Yep... Haven't gone to sycamore much this year, but I heard it has been pretty good haha. Eastman produces the most fish for me, so that's why I go there more often. And I do pretty well there regardless if I'm on a boat or not haha.

Wow! That is really a limited range. Won't the rod load properly under 3/16 oz.? Does over 1/4 oz. feel like too much for the rod? Or is it simply that this is the sweet spot for the rod? Do you own any other rods where you limit the lure range in the same manner?
This makes me wonder if there are a lot of people fishing within such a limited range (any 1/16 oz. range) to justify a rod strictly for those weights. In my own case I have a couple combos that will be fairly limited....1/4 oz. down to as low as I can cast, but that wouldn't be because the rods being used aren't capable of handling heavier baits. I just want to keep a couple different types of lures ready to go should the need or desire arise. However, this will severely limit usage of these combos because I don't fish those weights very often.
I consider my Medium Falcons rather limited at 1/4-1/2 oz. range.

New2bcbass... for me the rod serves as a "mag" finesse casting rod. I have over 2 dozen rods, most of which like the 742 are very technique, or weight range oriented. I can throw 1/8 oz weight plus hook and plastic or 1/4 oz jig or Texas rig plus plastic, but it tends to be a bit out of the rods comfort range and my intended needs for it. I do feel that about that 3/16 to 5/16 oz range is the sweet spot for the rod with likely diminishing returns once you deviate much in either direction. I believe the rod rates up to 5/8 oz but I wouldn't fish anything close to that on it. I would cap it at 3/8 oz and bump up a power for 3/8 on up.

As far as the sensitivity compariosn to an NRX I don't think its fair to compare rods that differ by $200. However the dx series is quite sensitive in its price range. I have zero issues ever detecting bites with it. The NRX is essentially a top 5 rod line for sensitivity in the eyes of many, with only a few custom builds and JDM rods competing on the same playing field.
For baits up to a 1/4 oz or so this would be a very good rod in the extreme lineup. It is only availiabe in a full handle so if you want a split grip you are in tough place between the 702 and 743. The 702 won't be as effective for weightless baits and jigs where a bit more power is needed for hooksets. It would serve well for drop shots and other finesse rigs. The 743 wouldn't be much of a finesse rod or drop shot rod but would be the rod for weightless plastics and light jigs and Texas rigs. The 742 is the perfect combination of the two.

Thanks. I've been learning lately that a rod's listed range isn't necessarily the last word when it comes to actual use. I have a rod rated 3/8 to 1-1/4 oz. that I wouldn't throw anything less than 1/2 oz. on, and that weight is really too light. I don't plan on using anything less than 5/8 oz. on this rod.
