Opinions On 3 Brands Of Mono Please? 2025

HELLO EVERYONE,
IM NEW HERE,AND I WOULD LIKE TO GET SOME OPINIONS ON 3 BRANDS OF MONO..
1.BERKLEY TRILENE XL.
2.ANDE REGULAR MONO.
3.REGULAR STREN.
JUST WANTING OVERALL OPINIONS OF THEM TO PUT ON SPINNING&BAITCASTING REELS.
IM GOING TO THEN GIVE THEM TO KIDS I KNOW OF THAT ARE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT FISHIN
BUT CANT AFFORD TO GO BUY ONE. IM GONNA HAVE TO BUY LINE, SO IM JUST WANTING
SOME IMPUT. THANK YOU....

I'd get either the Trilene XL or the Stren but given a choice, I'd go out and buy 1/4lb spools of Trilene Big Game at Walmart. 8 lb for spinning, 12 lb for baitcasting reels. You get much more line for a very reasonable price that way ($7-8 per spool).

I have had no issues with trilene xl, stren, and big game. I prefer the big game due to the lower cost as was stated by BobP.

Trilene XL and Stren original are going to be very similar. I've used both but I usually take Trilene first. I started out with it so it's just a habit, plus I'm probably subliminally attracted to that red box somehow. Both are very soft mono lines with low memory and work well on spinning rods. I use 8 pound line for spinning reels and 12 to 14 pound on bait casting reels. The line has a fair amount of stretch to it which actually helps with treble hook baits so you don't pull the bait out of the fish's mouth. Can hinder a solid hook set on single hook lures like spinnerbaits though. It also can fray or nick easier around rocky cover. Trilene XT is tougher line for something like that. I've heard good things about the Big Game line also.

Trilene XL, and or Orginal Stren= rubberband strechyness compaired to modern fluoroarbons and co-polymers, but easy to use, good cheap line. Sensitivity is mediocre at best, but that's just how most mono is. I have never used any Ande line......so no comment.

Out of the choices provided Trilene XL for my tastes. I hate Stren and have never used or heard of Ande line. You could get a 330 yard spool of XL for under $10.00. It would allow to fish almost all applications pretty well although you may compromise a few things here or there.

out of those, I would recommend the trilene XL. but my personal preference is the BPS excel mono. $20 for like 4200 yards of #14.

Trilene XL is my favorite when I fish Mono. I have never cared for Stren, and Ande is a saltwater line, not that it matters.

Why not give them a better line for about the same cost?
Izorline XXX Super Co-Polymer is around $6.50 for 300 yards.
This line is so thin, #8 or #10 will be fine for spinning tackle.

Berkley and Stren are owned by the same company and seem to handle very similar to me. I've never fished with Ande but it's very popular with the saltwater guys it seems and I'm sure there's a reason for that. I've had very good luck with Mustad Ultra Line Thor or UL Max and a local camping store sells the stuff for $10 for a 1lb spool, can't beat it for that price Hooked a 42lb flathead fishing for hybrids a few years ago with 14lb Thor. Fish swam into some debris from a demolished bridge (concrete, metal, rebar and such). I took pressure off the fish and she swam back out and the line still had enough left that I was able to fight her away from that mess and get her in the boat. I've been a believer in that stuff since then.

Not getting into a debate which is better, that's only in the eyes of each individual user, but trilene xl 8# is actually .010 diameter, izorline xxx 8# is .011, not that I think that really is enough of a difference to pick one over another. Trilene and Stren are available every where, some of the other lines are not.

I used Trilene XL for years. It is good cheap, soft, controllable line. As RW says, for about the same money you can get a good copolymer line that will give better sensitivity and abrasion resistance. I prefer P-Line CXX, going down one line size due to its increased strength. The trade-off is it is not quite as manageable as mono, but worth the extra attention needed in my opinion. With KVD Line and Lure it handles well.

Trilene XL. I only use mono. Stren has a larger diameter but I have used it successfully. I just like Trilene.

The three listed are all very good and reasonably priced. I would lean toward the XL line because it casts well and is manageable enough for kids. Ande is very good line too but I have only used it in higher test like twenty lb for sw. In addition ande is known for their lines breaking at advertised strength. If you're going for a record, it won't hurt to use ande.

I will second BPS Excel mono. It is very inexpensive, supple and strong. I have used the 8, 12, 14 and 20lb for the last ten years on the tidal Potomac with no problem and as has been said above, you cannot beat the price. BPS also puts it on sale occasionally, which makes it really inexpensive.

I'll probably catch A LOT of flack here for saying this, but here goes.
I have had a good experience with the absolute cheapest mono I found: 12# Spiderwire EZ-Mono. It was $6 for 220 yards at Walmart. I have been VERY impressed with it, on my BC anyways. I've straightened quite a few hooks trying to get free of a snag. Either that or my knot is the weak point. I just picked up some KVD tonight, but it doesn't seem like it needs it yet.

, and I have no experience with the EZ-mono. But I buy 330 yard spools of Sufix Siege/ Elite for $9; and that is retail in my DSG/ Walmart. (My Walmart doesn't usually carry Siege, DSG has both.)

I can't say that I saw that at this particular Walmart. However, I was simply looking for branded line (not Walmart brand) that was the absolute cheapest. I had to get a license, rod AND line and money was a factor. If I were to justify 5 extra bucks on line, I would have justified 7 and went with Power Pro like I wanted. Then, if I justified that 7, I would have justified an extra 20 for the rod I actually wanted instead of the cheapie i got just to be able to use my BC. My brain processes my finances funny. But hey, that's kinda what make me, me.
My frugality aside, the rod I got turned out to actually be pretty good even at the low low low price $14.95.

EDIT: I meant to say that the Sufix I buy costs the same (per yard) as the EZ mono, so the latter isn't any cheaper.

First thank you for thanking the time and money to get kids fishing, that's great. I know nothing of Ande line so can't comment, as far as the other two whichever is cheaper the day u buy it. Mono is fine and despite all the hype is sufficient for anyone and any presentation. Like u said its for kids who do not have money to buy it. So its better to give them something that when they need new line doesn't cost much.

Trilene XL has stood the test of time - and fish! However, about the only time I use it nowadays is when I'm panfishing. Much better lines are designed today to step up to the challenge of various bass fishing techniques. JMO.

I like Trilene XL over Stren. I use 8# Stren on my spinning reel, yet 12# XL on my Revo SX and the Trilene is much better in all aspects. Especially line memory and limpness. I treat all my line with KVD LnL and it helps both brands quite a bit.
