I never used braid? 2025

fishing user avatarburrows reply :

I want to start using braid to floro leader on my spinning rods but don't know what line to start off with should I go power pro or something cheap to learn how to use braid ?  I was also wondering how long should my leader be? Ill be using it for weightless soft plastics ?

fishing user avatarOnvacation reply :

I use Power Pro which I have found to have a great balance of durability, price and function.  If you are using a mono backer, a small amount of braid should get you pretty far.  It's the 1500 yard spools that kill the pocket book.

fishing user avatarAngry John reply :

i would go with 20lb suffix performance braid or a high quality braid.  The leader can be regular fluorocarbon line.  Spend the winter getting good at the joint knot.  I like the double uni and the Alberto.

fishing user avatarburrows reply :

How long should I make the leader?

fishing user avatarTeam9nine reply :

I consider PowerPro a "standard" for this line type - a perfectly acceptable line to begin with to see how you do with it. Still use it myself on a majority of my spinning outfits. Add a 4-5' leader of whatever line you want and you'll be good to go.

thanks brothers

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

I only have one reel spooled with braid, Power Pro 30 lb.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

#14 Gliss/ Tatsu #6 is what I am currently using. The leader length is jus outside the reel so that the knot does not come into play.

fishing user avatarFishOnLMB reply :

I would go with 20lb PP to a 10lb fluro leader. I use the fg knot to connect them. My leader size is usually 3-6 ft long.

fishing user avatarfishnkamp reply :

For spinning reels I have found I love Berkley Original FireLine in 14 pound test. That stuff just plays so nice, it is super strong and is only the size of 6 pound mono. I usually attach 4 feet of P Line CXX moss green in 10 pound test. This combo plays very well as the line sizes are close and the CXX in 10 pound moss green breaks in tests at over 20 pounds. I like Stren Original mono in 14 pound test as my backing in case I run into a  large predator like a big cat or striper. I have had over half my reel emptied before I cold get them turned.  For baitcasters,  I like Power Pro Spectra, Suffix 832 and Spiderwire Stealth and for your use I would get either 20 or 30 pound test. I would kinda lean towards the 20.  This setup has worked for me in dirty tidal waters and on Tennessee deep clear lakes.

fishing user avatarcuster reply :

I prefer Berkeley fireline in white with seagar red label.

The white is easy to see,  it floats and makes bite detection very easy. Red label is very good line,  well-priced,  and since I use it as running line on some rigs,  I always have some around.

I've not had a break off with that combo either salt or sweet water.

As for length of leader,  that depends on what guides / spacing the rod was built, water clarity and what technique I'm fishing. For whacky rig,  sometimes it's 40" or more,  for unweighted soft plastics in dirty water I may use 18".

This is truly a case where "depends" is a correct answer.

Good luck! !!

fishing user avatarFisher-O-men reply :

Probably won't get many likes on this, but I like Tufline Supercast!  It is a little thicker, but the coating makes it behave very nicely.  I also like J-Braid.  Most all of the 8 strand lines will be really smooth.

Leader length?  3'-4'

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

PowerPro and PowerPro Super Slick 8 user here.

10# (regular) and 15# (SS8) on all my spinning

reels.

Leader is variable, sometimes it'll be long, a couple
arm stretches or not. Really varies for me. I am not
a believer in a strict length as there are no hard, fast
rules in the biz.

fishing user avatarnew2BC4bass reply :

I felt original PowerPro was a lot noisier thru the guides than the Sufix Performace it replaced.  Replaced with PP because that was all I could get where I was visiting at the time.  No problem with Performance other than losing its color fairly fast....which didn't hurt performance.  Truthfully, tho, I think it would be hard to get a bad braid.  I don't use braid much, but have about 5 different brands currently in use on spinning and baitcast reels.

X2 for J-braid here, it soft somewhat manageable and pretty cheap. I use 20lb on my spinning, the leader depend on what lure im gonna fish with some I dont even bother.

fishing user avatarMike L reply :

Power Pro here.

Also, don't be afraid to use it without a leader. If your conditions dictate a leader and it makes you feel more confident, PP will serve you well.

fishing user avatarMassYak85 reply :

I would use regular Power Pro personally, I'm also a fan of 832 though. Make sure to use some mono backing to save money. For the leader you should be good with about a 4 foot leader. Now for weightless soft plastics I have been using yellow braid so I can see twitches in the line easier on the fall.

fishing user avatarMickD reply :

I disagree that it is hard to find a bad braid.  I seem to have found some pretty easily.  I now stick to Power Pro and Suffix Performance Braid, and don't go over 15 pound test.  Casts a mile, plenty strong enough for what I do.  I think 30 is definitely overkill for spinning and will cost significant distance.  As someone said, you don't need to fill the reel with it, so cost should not be a factor.  Buy 150 and use 50 yards per spool with backing required to fill the spool.  It lasts for years, so you won,'t be replacing it soon.

fishing user avatarFrankN209 reply :

I use Gliss to Invizx with a 4' leader.

fishing user avatarMosster47 reply :

I use 20lb PP Super Slick 8 w/ a 10lb P-Line fluoro leader, usually no less than 10'. If the water is gin clear I go with 6lb Inviz-x.

The one exception is my shaky head setup I run 8lb CXX leader. It's going to rubbing on bottom all day and that stuff has the abrasion resistance of weed eater cord.

fishing user avatarTurkey sandwich reply :

I fish almost exclusively braid main line.  On casting reels, 30 and 40lb 832 covers most applications and 15-20lb 832 or PP on my spinning reels.  Braid under 30lb has a tendency to dig into casting reels and cause problems and on spinning gear, I like going as light as I can to improve casting (even 10-15lb braid is more than enough for bass outside of heavy cover).

Leaders range a lot lot based on the body of water and conditions, but never run to the spool. EVER. 3-7' leaders cover 95% of applications very well.  In dense weeds, little or no leader may be required at all.

fishing user avatarsgibby88 reply :

I use to use spider wire but once I tried power pro i was hooked. Havent tried anything else braid wise. As far as a leader goes for me it depends on water dept and the length of my rod

fishing user avatarBigchunk reply :

Suffix 833 is nice

fishing user avatarmwh33 reply :

I use power pro and suffix 832 with no problems for my braid.

fishing user avatarBrackishBassin reply :

I use Power Pro for both my fresh and saltwater fishing. Never had an issue with it. Colors actually hold up pretty well too, which is unusual for braid. I don't use fluoro for my leaders because I'm a cheapskate and the waters here are too dirty for it to matter. I rarely even use a leader at all, tie straight to braid for most stuff. I will use leaders for things like drop shots (don't want to be cutting that much braid off every time I change out tactics) and jerkbaits (no slip loop knots make me nervous with braid, mono is much better for that type of thing imo).

Or you can tie directly to split ring or snap when use braid, get rid of unnecessary knot.

I do use snaps when I'm doing saltwater stuff, but I'm trying to break the habit when it comes to freshwater. I've definitely seen a difference in action with certain baits I have when using a snap. Plus, it seems to be frowned upon by most of the freshwater guys that I talk to. You haven't had the same experience?
