I currently have a 7ft medium shimano Cumara(the older grey series) I use for crankbaits, mostly squarebills etc. I am thinking about upgrading this rod. I usually like G-loomis IMX for other baits, but IMX doesn't have a crankbait rod. What are your favorites? I would like to keep the rod under 300$.
I use a dobyns 705cb for medium divers and a dobyns 805cb for my deep divers. I use a Megabass Diablo Fast Move x7 for squarebills and lipless.
Megabass Orochi XX Flat Side Special is what I use. Very versatile rod. $285 well spent.
Crankbait rods are something I am just getting into having previously used whatever MF rod was at hand. As much as I love my 6'6" MLM Aetos, my 704CB Glass is better for most of what I throw. Picked up the 7' Medium Aetos crankbait rod over the winter, but haven't used it as yet.
I am going to guess that whichever new rod you get will be above my budget, and thus I can't be of any help. Only reason I have the Dobyns is because of the generosity of a fellow member. Sold it to me for a lot less than he could have gotten for it.

I have actually been looking at the 704cb as a potential option. Never owned a dobyns.
Dobyns Champion 705cb graphite. I blew a lot of money buying and selling crankbait rods before finding this one.

Is the 705 to heavy for square bills? I have always used medium with shallow rather than MH.
Orochi XX Flatside Special someone else posted would be a good one. I personally really like throwing squarebills on my Orochi XX Spinnerbait Special, but it's not ideal for the smallest cranks. I also really like my Kistler KLX Crank Rip Twitch series MH/MedFast 6'9" for small to med squarebills and cranks, it's a great general purpose crank rod, and you get it in 7 and 7'3".
Lots is of good options to choose from.

That's mainly what I fish, that and lipless cranks. It's perfect for both. The 704 seems a little flimsy to me.
The 705CB is my dedicated squarebill rod. My favorite is actually the 764CBRM but that's because I throw Norman Deep Little N's a bunch.

This is my first and only Dobyns. May invest in another if I find one at the right price. I have been reading about the Hammer rods and want to try a couple of them. Well within your budget and made in USA. Don't need a lot of sensitivity for cranking, but a couple guys on another site rate the Hammer close to the NRX. Obviously not as good, but exceptional for the price.
I also love my dobyns 764 for all but the largest cranks. For square bills 1.5 I still use my avid 66mf.
I am a fan of the bass pro crankin stiks. I understand that dobyns may make an excellent crankbait rod but they cant do it for $80. just my 2 cents.
Dobyn's makes some great cranking sticks, you can even get a fury 705cb for $110. Otherwise youll have to move up to the champion series for a cranking rod.
I currently only use 2, but I plan on grabbing a FR705cb for everything but squarebills and the deepest divers. I use a D684cb for my sqarebills and jerkbait. I feel its a tad too light, but i have no really problems. Im currently in a some what permenant possesion of a D806cb and its a great diving crankbait rod, I use it primarily for 6-10XDs.
Id recommend the Fury 705cb, itll do the job for a lot less money. If you do want to shell out some bucks, check out the D685cb.

The Fury 705cb is what I bought my dad last season. It fishes nicely. Not quite as crisp as my Champion 705cb, but that's to be expected given the fact that it costs 1/2 as much. It's a quality rod, and I paid less than $100 during a 15% off sale.
Boy do I have a great option for you, since you said that your max budget was $300.
Gary Dobyns has some mislabeled Dobyns Champion crankbait rods in stock right now.
There was a mix up and a batch of DC735CB Glass rods and a batch of DC 736 CB Glass were mislabeled.
These mislabeled rods are perfect in every other way.
They even come with the standard Dobyns warranty. Each rod normally costs $240.
They are being sold at a discounted price, you can purchase one for only $170.
At that price you could get a nice Daiwa Tatula CT for $100 shipped to your home and the whole combo would be less than your max budget. If you are interested I can share that source for the reel at that price.
Go to their website. Click on the "store button at the top. The select mislabeled rods. I know at least 5 or 6 guys that are using them for squarebills, chatterbaits and crankbaits and love them.
Megabass Orochi Swingfire - KVD 1.5 size squarebills. I've used it for the 1.0 and 2.5 sizes but the 1.5 is really the sweet spot.
Phenix X3 Glass - KVD 2.5 size squarebills. I also use it for heavier crankbaits/chatterbaits, and I've used it for 1.5 size baits in a pinch, but the 2.5 and above is where I like this rod the best.
If I had to only pick one I would get the Phenix X3, because I can throw 1.0 and 1.5 squarebills on a spinning rod. The Orochi was more of a luxury buy, but d**n, it is a nice freaking rod to fish.
Abu Garcia Veritas 2.0 is what I use
Under 300 my two favorites are the XX Orochi Flat Side Special or for you "keeping it in the family" a Loomis 845 (the orange blended crankbait rod - orange colored, not actually blended with oranges). Problem with the Loomis is getting one, I've been waiting for another for a couple months. Hoping the April ETA on another batch holds true.
I use KLXs in both M and MH for all my treble hook applications. Love the heck outta these rods!
Ok so I went fishing tonight. Did pretty well actually. Figured out I am pretty happy with my light crankbaits rod. I do need a medium size to larger deep diver and chatterbait rod. What is your favorite for this application.
6'10" M Shimano Jackall Poison Adrena Glass rod is my go to for shallow to mid cranks. I love that rod.
7' MH/M St. Croix Pro Glass, no longer in production.
I have several cranking rods, from a MH glass rod for deep divers to a ML for finesse cranking. Out of all the cranking rods my favorite happens to be the least expensive, a Fenwick HMG 7'2" M-MF. It is rated as a medium but the lure weights are listed as 3/8oz to 1oz and it can handle 1oz but you can tell you're at the end. I was using it for square bills as the tip is soft but transitions to the backbone really fast so it lets me work a bait through cover with no problems. The thing is that the rod does a great job at handling cranks down to about 10'-12' so I find myself using it a lot, even for lipless cranks. That is by far the most versatile cranking rod I ever used, lighter than glass and handles such a wide range of baits, the best $100 I ever spent on a cranking rod.
Powell Inferno 704CB
This is my dedicated squarebill, lower end medium diver, and jerkbait rod.
I'd still recommend the Orochi XX Spinnerbait Special or the Kistler KLX CRT 7' or 7'3" MH/MedFast. With the addition of chatterbaits the Spinnerbait Special will be great but I'd also throw in the Orochi XX Diablo Spec R. It's a bit faster tapered then the Spinnerbait but is just an excellence versatile performer, and the extra length is great. Of the four Orochi xX rods I own the Diablo is my favorite. Any of the rods will handle anything but real deep diving cranks over say 3/4-7/8 oz. and the Orochi's in my hands both have more power then the KLX. Also a St Croix Avid or Avid X 7'0" MH/Mod would work really well also, I got my Dad the Avid do I have the 7'2" Legend extreme MH/Mod with split cork grips and recoils.
Rods I haven't tried but might fit your bill especially if you like softer rods for chatterbaits would be the new KLX Reel n Feel hybrid graphite/glass series, the Phoenix X series composite crank rods, the new Tatula Elite series rods, and of course Dobyns 705CB. I've read good reviews and feedback on all of these and considered them for future purchase.
Powell diesel 705cb glass has got the job done for me the past few years. I throw lipless, shallow, mid, squarebills on it. Ill upgrade it soon just for the heck of it tho to something nicer
Daiwa Tatula 7'2" MHRB....I plan on throwing crankbaits (including squarebills) and chatterbaits with it, everything over 1/2oz in size up to some 1oz baits. It comes in at a nice price point too.
I ended up purchasing the G loomis cbr843 crankbaits series. It is on sale at TW and I am partial to loomis as I have always been happy with thei4 stuff and really wanted a medium action rod. Great day fishing today and can't wait to try it out.
I have a BPS 7'0" MH Tourney Special that I inherited.

Yes, best crankin rods IMO too and I'm lucky enough to still have one of the 7' M Pro Glass. And just got another Shimano Curado 200B5 to put back on that rod...IMO it's the best pairing rod & reel for crankin. I'm a happy camper now! :-)
