Curado Price Drop? Competing with Lew's? 2024

fishing user avatarClonesGoneFishin16 reply :

I talked to a Bass Pro Shops fishing department employee yesterday, and I asked him what was up with the Curado price drop after I saw that both TW and BPS had them for $150. I asked if it was temporary and why the Citica, which now the Citica and Curado are both sitting at $150, hadn't dropped in price. He said that he wasn't sure why the Curado price drop occurred and didn't know when it would change back. He said that they had been selling price point comparative Lew's reels at least 5 fold of what their in-stock Citica and Curado product had been moving. He said that Lew's has been basically out selling all other reel manufacturers and he thought that it was possibly Shimano's effort to be more competitive with Lew's. Anyone else hear something similar to this?

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

Lews are fine reels but I find the assertion that they have Shimano on the run kinda funny. You'll make yourself nuts trying to psycho analyze why corporations do what they do. Just jump on the best deal on the reel with the features you like.

fishing user avatarreason162 reply :

Probably because there's a new iteration Curado coming out.

Shimano competes with Daiwa and vice versa...I don't think they're too concerned about Lews.

fishing user avatarbigturtle reply :

Lews out selling Shimano and Daiwa? Good joke

fishing user avatarfishnkamp reply :

The guy behind the counter probably tells everyone that because he is probably a fan of Lews reels.

Hey ClonesGoneFishin16, welcome to the Forums!

I just got a Cabela's Fishing catalog in the mail and noticed the same thing. I had to scratch my head at that one and as I turned a few pages the number of Lew's reels made me murmur "They REALLY like those Lew's reels". There were three pages of 11 various Lew's reel models. IMO, whatever the reason, we fishermen should benefit. Especially if you're a Shimano Curado fan.  JB

Yea there are a lot of guys on the Lews wagon and im sure for a good reason. However I can't see Shimano or Daiwa scrambling to compete with Lews prices.

fishing user avatarlmbfisherman reply :

Speculation is there is a new Curado incoming.

Isn't the 70 less than a year old??? Maybe something in between the 70 and the 200I?

fishing user avatarNorcalBassin reply :

Definitely coming out with a new model and more likely driven by the release of more palm friendly versions of the Tatula tapping into the Curado market. They'll release it with just enough of the higher end technology of the new Chronarchs to sway buyers back to them and then we'll see something new from Daiwa in 2 years...

fishing user avatarfishnkamp reply :

If anything it is probably to compete with the Daiwa reels in the $100 to $175 range

fishing user avatarCTBassin860 reply :

Im still going to but another Tatula CT.

That i believe

fishing user avatard-camarena reply :

Im hoping for a curado 200 or 250 super duty. Something in between the regular curado and the tranx. With a deep spool.

Yeah not sure, i think it's a replacement of the Curado I with potentially a MGL spool and updated brakes to match the 70.  Just because they just added the 70 I don't think it is necessarily mean the 70 is out that soon, the 70 has been a hit.

fishing user avatarfishnkamp reply :

Daiwa has dropped the Exceler which was built on a different body than any Tatula.  It then brought out a Fuego CT built on the Tatula CT body, it offers a $100 Daiwa without the T wing. It has the same number bearings as the  Exceler.  Next it offers multiple CT models, a Fuego 100 built with 12 ball bearings, and all of the Tatula 100 sized models. All of those cost under $200 including the new Tatula CT SV model.  I am certain that played in to Shimano's  pricing.

I didnt mean phasing out the 70.I meant that the current "new" curado isnt even a year old.

Could be that they know Daiwa hit a 500ft homerun with the Tatula CT.For under 150 bucks.

fishing user avatarBaitFinesse reply :

The speculation is that the Curado 200i is going to be updated or replaced.

Hrm pretty sure the Curado I was released late 2014?

fishing user avatarHulkster reply :

I am curious to know whats going to happen to the power ratio version. I bought the 5:5:1 ratio for big lipped cranks and big bladed baits and love it. if they update the line will there be a power ratio still available? as the Tranx is quite big.

fishing user avatarsgibby88 reply :

Regardless of the situation if your a brand loyal person you`ll stick with what you like. Me personally I`ve always been a shimano fan but to each their own

fishing user avatarMosster47 reply :

I fish Lew's for ergonomic reasons over Shimano and Daiwa. I really doubt they are out selling those two 5:1.

fishing user avatarfishnkamp reply :

Well it would be easy to sell more Lews than almost anything ( with the exception of BPS ) since most of the Bass Pros only stocked BPS, Lews and Browning for the most part.  I was in 2 Bass Pro Shops in Tn, one in VA and both the MD and PA stores last year.  Their intentions are clear they were pushing mostly BPS gear. During my last trip to the shop in MD there were no Daiwas at all.

fishing user avatarJDNKC reply :

Wow, that is a great reel for the money.  Anyone in the market for a reel should consider the curado 200i.  I have 4 of them and am very pleased.

this!  and i'm a lews fan myself......

asking for an opinion at bps is about like asking someone at walmart which shampoo is best.

no offense to anyone here that works at bps but generally speaking the people there are not much help.

Now that is funny!  Unfortunately all too often true.

I'm thinking about picking one up. Lots of Shimano love here on the forum, maybe I'll give one a try.

fishing user avatarfisherrw reply :

I personally think shimano curado I's are crap and I'm really not a big fan of lews either I've owned curado I's that are junk and that are decent it's really a hit and miss game seems like you have a 50/50 chance to get junk or a decent reel I bet there lowering the price becuse someone finally realized that a curado I is not worth 180$ especially when you can get one for close to 100 on eBay. I am a shimano customer but I prefer there older E series reels and some of the more expensive stuff. Some of you probably think I am completely wrong becuse you got a good curado but me and my buddy both fish long hard days and abuse our reels somewhat and we're sticking with E series shimano becuse there bulletproof

fishing user avatarhoosierbass07 reply :

What's so funny about Lews competing against Shimano?  Last year I picked up my first Lews baitcaster for $130 and to my surprise it worked almost perfect and blew my $200 Chronarch out of the water.  Last week I picked up my second Lews baitcaster - Tournament Pro, and it casts great.  I picked that up at the Indianapolis Outdoor show and the sellers I saw were all selling Lews with a few Daiwa reels and few *** reels.  Not too many Shimano reels.

Lews baitcasters are the real deal.  I love my Shimano spinning reels but I doubt I will buy a Shimano baitcaster again.  Lews is amazing.  Now my Chronarch is a piece of worthless junk.  And at Gander Mountain yesterday I was looking at a Shimano $150 baitcaster and the four mechanical brakes seemed sort of junky/cheap.

fishing user avatarEvanT123 reply :

It seems to me that the brake system on the curado I was a rush job. The issues with the pipe and constant oiling have been well documented. Interesting to see all the new models coming out with the new systems. Time will tell if they are as reliable as the vbs.

fishing user avatarHulkster reply :

but isn't the same thing required on the Curado 70? they changed the brake shoes but it still works the same way - brake makes contact with the brake pipe. so wouldn't that make the same squealing noise without a light application of oil?

fishing user avatarSammies77 reply :

Maybe everyone realized the citica I is the same reel and they had to lower the price to actually sell more curados.

Maybe not to the shimano fans on this site, but in the real world lews has definitely given shimano a run for thier money in the casting reel game.

fishing user avatarHulkster reply :

something is up. shimano never drops the price on anything. the only time reels go on sale is if they are being discontinued.

besides, even if it were true that they were lowering the price because of competition, the reels wouldn't be listed as 'on sale' just the listed price would be lower - I think.

At BPS yesterday, the Curados weren't listed as on sale, they were just listed at $150.

I don't know. I posted a thread on the topic and it got zero responses.

All I can assume is the newer style brakes are what they are going to use going forward.

fishing user avatarkickerfish1 reply :

Shimano will not keep the price of the Curado and Citica the same. Either a new 200 sized Curado is on the horizon which is my guess or the Citica will drop some in price. Both situations could be likely.

Lews only competes with Daiwa and Shimano for the under $200 market. Once you get above $200 I would venture to guess majority of the reels purchased by fisherman are made by Shimano or Daiwa.

With Daiwa having a retail price of $130 on the Tat CT it does have the upper hand on Shimano there. Perhaps Shimano may adjust prices to compete more favorably with Daiwa. Daiwa has the base CT at $130, the Type R at $180 and the CT SV at $200. Prior to the price drop on the Curado I series they had 200 I at $180 and 70 I at $200. That is a $50 difference between the 200I and Standard CT. Buy them on Ebay and the cost of owning a workhorse Daiwa is much cheaper plus the palming/frame size is smaller.

I would venture to guess I-Cast will bring a few new pieces from Shimano designed to counter various Daiwa Tat CT offerings.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

If I'm wanting to know something about reels the guy at BPS aint who I'm asking!

Since it's introduction anglers have had a love/hate relationship with the Curado & as the Citica has evolved that relationship is strained even more.

With no solid evidence to back it up I've heard rumors of a lighter more compact 100 model. What's unclear is will it be a Citica or Curado, with Curado already having a 70 one must assume Citica.
