I am looking into getting a new reel, and I was wondering which reel you prefer. I realize that both of these reels are very similar in price and according to some places that I have read similar in performance.
So I was wondering what the people on the boards thought was the better reel.

I had a Revo S I sold after getting a Citica 200E. I set the brakes on the Revo 2 on, 4 off and the brakes that were disengaged would engage during fishing. My solution was finally to take off the four I wasn't using. Casting was also inconsistant. Using the same rod, same lb. test line, and casting weight the Citica would outcast the Revo. If you didn't know the Citica only had 4 bearings you would swear it had as many as the Revo. I also prefer the lighter weight of the Citica.

I have two Revo S and a Citica E. I like them both and both set up and handle about the same. If I were to need another baitcaster, I would probably choose another Citica over the Revo S because I think it handles lighter weight lures a little better. I hope this helps.

I have both reels and they both perform very well. As far as reels go - these two are about as close as you can get between two manufacturers in terms of performance. The strength of the Revo S is casting heavier baits and the drag is smooth and oh so strong. The strength of the Shimano Citica is the weight and its ability to cast lighter baits. In my opinion, the Revo seems a bit smoother and the weight makes it seem a bit more substantial.
I recently had the opportunity to get another reel and I chose to acquire another Citica (and now I have an even number of Revos and Shimanos).
If you can not decide on rational grounds, flip a coin because these are two really good reels that will do the job for a long time.

New Citicas cast lightweight baits? I bought a 200E fairly recently and it did not cast 1/4 lures nearly as far as my old Citica 100DSV on the same rod, 2 brakes on 10#Pline each....i am going to have to upgrade to a Curado spool to get the same performance.

OK. here is why i will never buy a Revo Reel... 1. The worm gear nut sticks out the bottom of all revo reels and rubs on my fingers the way i like to hold my reels. 2. take a revo reel and try and turn the handle backwards and low and behold about 4 mm of back turn before it stops... Shimanos don't do that... does it make a difference? don't know but i don't like it... 3. My dad still has bantams form the 70's that still work great... i've yet to see an abu reel last over 40 years

It depends what application you are looking for. For me, the citica is a bit bulky if you are looking for a smaller profile in a reel go with the revo. But the best advice is to go to a store which carries both, (gander mountain, bps, cabellas.. etc) and just see which one fits better into your hands, then bam you have your reel.

I have a Citica 201D, 201E, and 2 Revo S-L's, pus an SX-L, and STX-L. I would take the citica 201E over all of them, the the 201D, then Revo S, toss a coin on the SX and STX. Other than size and weight I can detect no noticable performance differnaces in the E vs D, they both cast smaller baits better than the Revo, and both reels feel very powerfull, I have no trouble cranking DT16's or DD22's with either Citica. If I try that with a Revo it feel like I am trying to pull the plug on the lake. Drags are more powerfull on the Revo's, but for bass fishing the Shimano's have plenty, never understood the need for 20+ lbs of drag in a bass reel, even flipping or pitching with 50lb braid in heavy slop the Shimano's offer plenty. That beeing said, IF you find a good deal on Revo S grab it, but at full retail the Citica E is not only cheaper but better.

What you are looking at is 2 reels that perform very well with both having, in general, comparable quality. Opinions are always welcome because they give you food for thought in what you may have missed, but remember that opinions aren't cut in stone. If you haven't, I would go find these reels and hold them, put them on a rod, and if possible, see if there is a way to make a couple of casts with them. I understand that this may be a tall order, but if it's doable it would be worth it to you. Then you can come back here and chew on the opinions with a little more info already under your belt.
They are both respectable reels and I am sure that after doing your homework here, you'll choose the right one for yourself. cough revo cough

Citica 200e all the way. The only reel better than the Citica 200E for less then $200 is the Curado 200E.

I have no experience with the shimano reels.. however i do own 4 different revos.. (S, 2 STXs, and a Premier) IMHO you can't go wrong with any of these reels and you can usually find a revo S for 100 bucks for less. You are getting a lot of reel for that price. If you go with a revo you wont be disappointed..
From what a lot of people on this forum say about the shimanos you probably can't go wrong with them either.
So, toss a coin.. whether its heads or tails you are still going to be getting a lot of reel for around a hundred bucks with each one.. let us know which one you chose and why

here's my 2¢. i've owned both and both are excellent basic reels and you'd really have to work hard to birdnest either one. the biggest difference performancewise that i found between them was when pitchin' and when casting lighter lures where the citica fared better no matter how much i fiddled with the centrifugal brakes. i also found the smooth, rounder knobs on the citica more to my liking. good luck.

Does the citica have bushings in place of bearings in certain locations when compared to the Curado?
The Citica has so few bearings, it seems like you could really smooth it out swapping bushings for bearings. ('IF' that is possible)
Ignoring that possibility it seems like when 'tuned' the revo might have an advantage due in part to the higher bearing count. I'll bet a bearing swap on those reels really smooths things out.
There is also a lower line capacity light weight spool, with upgraded centrifugal breaks available for the Revo's for about $83 currently.

Shimano reels should be fished without any
super tuning. The Citica doesn't need any work,
it's a great reel at the pricing point. If you want
more, buy the Curado CU200E7.

The Revo also palms better in my hands and that's the reason why I choose it over the Citica. Although I think the Citica is a bit better in terms of lighter baits, I use my Revo to flip and pitch so it's not like that matters.
Final answer... feel it out in the stores and choose which you like better.

The Curado has a driveshaft bearing and bearing packs in the crank knobs. The Citica can have all this added for about $60 extra....Buy the Curado and you get a light weight spool and save about $20.
But to upgrade the driveshaft bearing in the Citica would only cost about 15 and is well worth it... The reel Mechanic told me he felt no Difference in the crank with bearings vs. the stock crank. I upgraded the crank in my Citica to get bigger grips as the stock ones made my fingers cramp. But I'm 6'2" with long lanky fingers.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who had that reaction. My Citica E is smaller than my Revo Premier and my Revo STX and the last time I checked, they were the same size as the S.

I have fished with the Revos S and the Citica E and the Citica is hands down the better reel in my opinion. Much smoother, more consistent casting and just an overall much better reel.

I have a Revo S and a Citica E - I FAR prefer the Citica. In fact I am currently working on replacing the Revo on the rod its on because I feel like its reel is too heavy I have a ton of trouble pitching jigs *mind you I'm also very new at this technique too*.

If you like plastic then the Shimano is for you. If you want aluminum then the Revo. If you want a better reel then the Advantage Super Tuned.

Oh, by the way Abu was making reels long before the first Bantam 100's were made. In fact you can still get most of the parts for reels made in the '50's. Try finding a pinion gear for the 100's, 200's or 300 Bantams.

Curados and Citicas have aluminum frames and graphite side plates. The Curado 300 has an aluminum side plate on the handle side.

Not a Shimano hater, and own several Citica 100, along with a couple of Chronarch B's and even have a 1980 Bantam 100 (retired of course). Not to mention Stradic's and Greenies, but are they better then my Daiwa's or Abu nope.
