Wanting to try a new brand of rod.. 2024

I have been a huge fan of the Mojo Bass from St. Croix, I have 4 of them, and I have a Dobyns Fury as well. I wanted to branch out and try something new. I dont want to spend over $150 for the rod. I was thinking a MH for jigs 1/2 and under, t-riggs, spinners, lipless cranks, maybe frogs. I know certain rods of same power and action still feel different. Just seeing if anyone had any suggestions before I order something.

I'm in the same boat. One I hear a lot of people recommend is the original Tatula rods. I have their Ardito travel rods. I like them a lot, so I'm probably gonna try a Tatula eventually.

I'd go with the tatula(can be found around 110 shipped depending on length) or an *** black. Or if you are open to used rods you might find a crazy good deal on a much more expensive rod

Call Powell Rods. Ask about a Powell Max3D model 683 CEF. They had dropped this particular rod from the line up but the owner said it is back. Before that go read the Tackletour review on the original Powell Max rod. I own one of the original Max (not the MAX 3D) rods and the reviewer is right. It is the most versatile in my arsenal. I purchased it and matched it with a Diawa Exceler reel and that puppy can do amazing things. It is not good at casting baits below its 1/4 rating which is fine, but it does not care, it throws anything above it. They even threw an 8 inch 2,5 ounce swim bait. If you can save $50 more, trying going up a one tier in the rod families you have used already, and you will be amazed at the difference.

tatula for $110 = no brainer.
i have the 6'10" MH/F casting rod and it's one of my favorite rods i own. i've tried some other ones with thoughts of replacing the tatula and each time i remember just how much i like that rod. it's just a phenomenal all around stick and worth every penny of the $110 you can find them for right now.

are you talking about the XT or the reg Tatula?

I mean I love St. Croix, no doubt about that. absolutely nothing bad to say about them at all. I was just thinking about trying new companies just for kicks and giggles. Although, i have been debating on the Avid, just more than what I was aiming for. Im gonna grab a new reel as well thats why i was wanting to be under $150 for the rod and $150 for the reel, Literally every baitcasting reel i own is Lews. Im looking into reels that can compete with the MB for that price as well.

There's definitely nothing wrong with trying other rod families. I believe that will make you well versed across the different brands. It will also make you appreciate the craftmanship when and if you decide to move up in quality. Especially if you ever go into the Custom realm. Best of luck to you on this journey.

regular tatula, never tried the XT
used to have an avid, but sold it. i'd take a tatula over the avid every single day.

I noticed that on this website they show some of the actions for these rods with the letter R. I know F = Fast and XF = Extra Fast but what does R stand for? Regular?

+1 for the original Tatula. Great rods and at the price you can usually find them for they blow everything else out of the water. I'm sort of a gear junkie and most of my stuff is high end...But I do have a Tatula 7' M/R and won't be getting rid of it...Looks a little out of place next to Megabass and Legend series rods on my boat, but it's earned a spot there .
A Daiwa regular action is about the same as a Moderate-Fast. Good for reaction stuff. I use my 7' M/R for shallow cranking. Daiwa's are also similar to St Croix in that they run a little more powerful than most other companies, not quite as much as St Croix, but still noticeable.

The Fenwick Silverhawk has been great for me, and I got it on sale for next to nothing. A Cabela's only rod.
I also have a rod that can't be named here, but I absolutely love the thing.

I like the Fury but the guides on the rod aren't anything to write home about. I have the 7'4" HF, been using it for my jig rod. My buddy has a Fenwick, great rod. He loves those like I love the Mojo Bass lol I think Im going to give the Diawa a chance. Im gonna try a Diawa tatula reel as well. Ive been bass fishing for the past year and a half and have been stuck on St. Croix and Lews. Just time to branch out and try other companies, just to say I have you know what I mean?
The aspect of the Fury I do love is the tip on the rod. Its stiff but you can still feel the weight of the jig. I have absolutely no problem detecting bites in rocks of the extra weight in grass. If youre looking for a cheap and nice rod for kicks and giggles the fury isnt a bad option honestly. But, i would take the mojo bass over the fury everytime IMO

The Duckett Ghost is a great value rod, used my friends ghost and he was casting it twice as far as my okuma. same length rod, both using braid. Duckett in general makes good value and quality rods if your considering changing companies.

Those are way cheaper than everywhere i found them! Just the size and action are off for what i need it for, I need it to be a dedicated worm and jig rod. I want it 7' MH/F

If you are looking at the tatula lineup which it sounds like you are, the 72H, or 7'2" Heavy is probably the best bet for the 1/2oz jigs and such. For sure the Tatula reels feel best on them, and you can find the Tat Type R around the $125 range, awesome reel and has the 8:1 ratio which is perfect for throwing the bottom contact baits, should be able to get the combo for around $240ish more than likely, and really for that price i would say hands down the best value. If not wanting the Heavy action, you could go with the 7'2" MHR, it actually felt a little more tip heavy to me vs the heavy, but it is a little lighter in action, and will work for a variety of presentations with the regular taper. It really isnt like a crank rod at all on that model, it easily will handle bottom contact, but 1/2oz jig or plastic may be pushing the limits on that rod IMHO.

Get the 7'1MH XF and don't give it a second thought. I have it. It's a nice rod. Good for worm fishing.

Just for clarification are you talking about the original Mojo's or the new 2016 redesign?

I got mine in the middle of 2015, from what I understand last year was when they upgraded the blank from the 2014 model?

You just described an Abu Garcia IKE 70-5 power rod. 1/4-3/4 rated. Fantastic Rod, trust me I promise you will agree.

These are pretty solid rods. The only problem is the guides are tiny, even by micro standards. If you are going to throw any sort of braid to fluoro leader setup these guides will eat it your joining knot really quick. Ask me how I know this?

With the rods you already own, none of the rods mentioned are going to blow you away. However if you step up to an avid or a champion I think you will be pleased.

well my transmission went out in my truck yesterday so i wont be purchasing anything for a while

I wish i could say I havent seen the same thing! I will probably be throwing straight braid/floro but if the eyes are that small im not foolin with it. thanks for the heads up!
