Braid for spinning gear 2025

fishing user avatarFishin' Fool reply :

Okay I'm finally jumping on board the braid to fluoro line for spinning gear. What pound test braid are you all using like the 20 pound (6 pound diameter ) or 30 pound  (8 pound diameter? Or is that too heavy?

fishing user avatarbigturtle reply :

if you are using lighter lures, say less than 1/2oz, you might want to use 10-20lb braid, for anything under 1oz, 20 or 30 lb works fine, you would want to step up to 40-50lb if you fish very heavy cover.

its all personal choice, but most common sizes are, as you said, 20 and 30lb. I personally use 20lb braid with 8lb mono leader.

fishing user avatarYudo1 reply :

I use 20 lb.

fishing user avatarWayne P. reply :

I use 6# mono equivalent diameter and 8# mono equivalent diameter superlines on all of my spinning rigs.

The breaking strength ratings go from 20# to 40#.

fishing user avatarnew2BC4bass reply :

It was suggested by members here that I use 30# on my MH jig and worm rod.  If I ever have to re-spool the reel, I think I will drop down to 20#.  BTW, that 30# will straighten out jig hooks.  I've got 10# on a Daiwa 1500CU.  I know the benefits of braid, but still prefer mono for most setups.

fishing user avatarScott F reply :

8 and 10 pound braided line for me. For where I fish, I have never used or needed heavier line. You didn't say, so I have no idea what kind of water you fish so it's hard to say what to tell you you should use. One of the advantages of braid is it's small diameter. Lures will run deeper and cast farther with thinner line. Ignoring that advantage by matching braid diameter to thicker mono is something I don't understand.

Lk St Clair and some inland lakes.

fishing user avatarIDUTBass reply :

I use 10 lb yellow and 10 lb blue power pro on both of my spinning outfits.

fishing user avatarCgrinder reply :

10 lb Power Pro

fishing user avatarloudcherokee reply :

15lb yellow power pro for me, tied to either an 8, 10, or 12 pound red label leader.

You *really* don't need to go heavy braid
unless you are using the reel for heavy cover
flipping, and so on.

I use 10# (2# = mono) and 15# (4#) Power Pro
and Power Pro Super Slick 8. Both are very
strong, much more than their pound rating.

And for these aging eyes, yellow is the color
of choice for me. Then a leader on every setup.

I'll add that I fish a LOT of laydowns and submerged
stumps, bushes, etc. I don't do much in the way
of punching or so on. I do light gear and have been
just fine. The braid has very rarely snapped on me.
I can count on one hand the number of times it has
in years of fishing. FWIW.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

I only have one spool for spinning reel with braided line, 30 lb Power Pro, braided doesn't perform well where I fish the most.

fishing user avatarI.rar reply :

10-15# for spinning

30# for casting

I used 15# for my bfs rig when I had it fwiw.

fishing user avatarFishin' Fool reply :

Thanks guys grabbed a spool of Power Pro slick 15 pound (4 pound diameter) off of Ebay. Been finding things cheaper than TW on Ebay with free shipping lately. Spending way too much money.

I bought my spool on eBay as well.

I think you'll like it. I probably won't buy
regular Power Pro again. That said, I've
got a 1500 yard spool of 15 SS8 that will
last me a very long time.

fishing user avatarbuzzed bait reply :

yeah i think 15# is good for the spinning reel for most or all techniques that you'd want to use the spinning rig for

fishing user avatard-camarena reply :

Just so you can get an idea, i fish 90% of all my fishing on spinning gear.

ML- 10lb braid to 8lb flouro leader

M- 15lb braid to 10lb flouro leader

Mh- 15lb or 20lb braid to 12 or 14lb flouro leader

H- 30lb braid to 16lb flouro leader

I dont think i could go back to straight flouro. Try it

Ps. I flip and punch with spinning gear, when i do this i do a 20lb leader on the heavy rod with 30pb braid. I have never lost a fish due to line breakage

fishing user avatarFisher-O-men reply :

Best advice I can give is this; ease up on your hooksets!  Otherwise you will end up popping off fish at the leader knot.  Until you have yourself trained, ease off on your drag.

fishing user avatarblckshirt98 reply :

I use 15lb for my spinning gear so that I can use up to 12lb fluoro as a leader and if I get snagged I can snap the fluoro without losing any of the pricey braid.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I have 10lb on a couple, 20lb on a couple, and 24lb Gliss on a couple. I like the Gliss the best of all of the, 10lb the best of the standard braided lines.

What is this Gliss you speak of?

The new Gliss is an interesting line ... Most bass users will want to try in the #12 lb ~ #24 lb. line size range ... I went gonzo and am using #8 lb. Gliss on a Ned Rig I now call : "The Stealth Bomber" !

As thin as the 24lb is, I'm afraid I couldn't see the 8lb to tie it. I use to have 5lb Maxima on my dropshot rod, 24lb Gliss is actually thinner than that stuff is.

fishing user avatarPatrickKnight reply :

About 90% of my fishing is done with spinning gear and I use 10 lb on my ml set ups and 15 lb my medium set ups. I also use a mod/fast rod for my medium power and a fast action for my ml.

Bluebasser86 : You speak the truth ...I may regret going down that low in test . I'm using a double palomar knot with the Ned with no leader - as thin as #8lb Gliss is and pink color there should be no line shy issues with the fish .
