Avid X micro guides- will leader knots flow? 2024

fishing user avatarBigBass'n_Harrison reply :

Hi,

To anybody who has experience with the Avid X, will a braid to leader knot flow through well enough or will it get caught up a lot? I know they are micro guides, but some micro guides are big enough to allow leader knots through clean enough that it doesn't greatly impact casting distance.

Thanks!

Harrison

Mine never got caught up at all, but it definitely stopped me from getting max distance. I wasn’t a fan and returned it. I wish they made a split grip without the micro guides. Getting a Dobyns Champion 734

I wish they made a split grip with standard sized or at least semi micro guides as  well. Dobyns Champion was my other choice if the Avid didn't work out. I'll wait and see what more people say, but thanks for the response!

Cabelas has a St Croix Premier split grip and the new Legend X has regular guides.

I had an AvidX MXF 6’-8” and never had an issue of leader knot hanging up in the guides...

What pound test were you using? I'll be using heavier line, 40 lb braid to 12-15 lb fluoro/mono.

That might be tougher, I was using 15 lb braid to 8 lb fluoro.  An FG knot does help some as it is smaller..

Yeah I figured based on the rod you said you had, thanks for the response.

fishing user avatarLCG reply :

I have an 6'6" mh-f avid x casting rod. I have tried 30lb braid to a 15lb fluorocarbon leader using a uni knot connection and I can cast it but I really don't like the knot going through the guides. You can feel it catching.

But I absolutely love the rod. So I am going to experiment with some big game mono in 15lb and try it out. If that doesn't work, then I will be using the rod for pitching it tight area using a short leader or straight braid.

The rod is as close to perfection that I have found so far, not to say there isn't better but it just feels right in my hands. So I am willing to negotiate on line use.

fishing user avatarBoomstick reply :

On my 6'9" ML/XF spinning rod, I have no issues with leader knots. However, I'd be wary about it with thicker line, I only use 10-15lb braid and 6 or 8lb fluro leaders...

fishing user avatarMickD reply :

Depends on the diameter of the leader and what knot is used.  The FG knot most likely will go through any micros ok with the diameters of leaders and braid lines that are used for bass.  Most knots probably will not with leaders above about 15 pounds.  But the only way to know is to try it.

If you are asking because you want to buy one but are not sure, I recommend you buy a rod with regular guides and not have to worry about it.

Yeah I love the way the rod feels, I'll think about it some more. Thanks for the response

Yes I am thinking about that as well, I just love the Avid X feels. I'll probably end up with a Dobyns Champion or Tatula Elite. Maybe an ALX Zolo.

With an fg you will be fine

Yeah I was thinking the same, I was looking up some videos on the FG knot and other leader knots and the FG adds very little extra bulk to the line. I think with 40 maybe 30 lb braid and 12 0r 14 lb mono/fluoro I'll be okay. It does seems pretty difficult to tie though, gonna take a lot of patience for me to learn it lol

Alternatively you could look at the Legend Tournament, beautiful rods.

I’m using it on two rods I built with #4 guides. One has 30/10lb and the other 50/20lb. The braid is Sunline Siglon which is smaller than usual diameter but still...

I use the Jeff Kriet way of tying it. I recommend googling that and giving it a shot. There’s no need in using your teeth lol. I practiced one day until I got it and now I’m good to go. Then I made my kids do the same thing and they have it down also.

This guy does it the same way.

I believe they have micro guides as well so the extra 60-70 bucks isn't worth it for me especially when I'm trying to stay as low as possible.

The Tournement uses Fuji K series guides. They’re not micro guides.

Okay thank you for the video I will check it out. I'm not very knowledgeable on guide sizes, but if I had to guess, I would think the ones on the Avid X rods won't be smaller than #4.

Oh okay. Thanks for the response, they are out of my budget though.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Call St Croix and ask their tech people if thier micro guides will pass a Uni-Uni knot with ease.

Tom

fishing user avatarMickD reply :

"Micro" is a subjective term applied to guides that are small, but they come in many sizes, some not so small, (a subjective term), some quite small ( a subjective term).     "Micro" really doesn't mean enough to allow anyone to answer a question like this that doesn't even include the diameters of the lines used.

Will a single foot fly guide pass a uni-uni with ease?  Will a double foot guide pass a uni - uni with ease?  It depends.

fishing user avatarSmalls reply :

I use the FG knot almost exclusively, but be careful. The knot is designed to tie braid to larger diameter leaders.

It'll work with leaders slightly smaller than your main line, but don’t go crazy and start tying 50 lb braid to 12 lb leader.

50# braid is the same diameter as 12# mono.

fishing user avatarpunch reply :

I have a 7'4 Heavy avid X. I have 50lb braid and I tried to do a 12lb floro leader and the knot will NOT go through the guides. It's kind of annoying actually. I tried some different knots.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

When Alex was making my custom ALX rods for me he asked if I used braid with a leader and recommended nothing smaller then 5.5mm micro guides. Thought 5.5mm was the inside diameter and Alex corrected me saying micro guides are sized by the outside of the guide rind.

As mentioned by Punch, he has a problem using Advid X with micro guides using braid with leaders. Learning the FG knot may be an option, but the knot will get beat up going though small ID micro guides thousands of times; 9 guides each cast!
