Hey guys, well I haven't been posting pics lately, just a dozen or so 2-3lb bass and tons more under 1lb.
I finally decided earlier this week, it was time to throw a jig. I've always wanted to get good with a jig, but always quit after a few casts.
First bass. 12in maybe even only 11in.
Second bass. 2 1/2 lbs solid.
Third bass. (First let me say this, It was 8:30pm, Reservoir closes at 9pm, and I was freezing. I had stopped throwing a jig about an hour or two before and had been throwing a shaky head. Lost my very last hook that I had brought. I told myself, this is my last cast of tonight, no matter what I'm leaving after this cast. I threw the jig out there.)
Bam, 5lber hits and put up a nice little fight. (weighed on a junky spring 1-25lb scale that only did pounds and half pounds. oh well)
First time that pictures made the fish look smaller. This bass looked MUCH better in person. Oh well.
To say the very least, I'm hooked on jigs. Although I don't get as many bites, the fish are quality, and gosh is it fun!!!
Thank you BR for the great help!
Awesome, congrats! I hope to get familiar with jigs this summer as well. I think I need to just put away the jerkbaits and shaky heads and make a few trips and only take jigs.
Awesome! I've only caught about 10 bass on jigs but 4 of them have been more than 4lbs.

That's what I like about the jigs, although I've only caught 3, one being 5lbs, and the other being above 2, makes it all the more exciting. Quality goes WAY up.
Very nice fish and it's more then 5lbs!

Agreed. She'll meet the 5lb mark and pass it. Looks closer to 6 , 6.5 to me.
Great job dude, ........another jig fisherman is born
GREAT fish!
Nice pic, too.
8-)
very nice fish, and you look happy
Thanks everyone. As for the weight, it was on a very old spring scale and the spring was totally stiff. But it said 5lbs exactly, so that's just what I can say. In person I honestly thought 5 1/2 easy.
Oh well, weight isn't all that important due to it's not my PB, I'm just happy that this Jig is working out for me!
What kind of retrieve were you working to sucker in that hog, cause ive been seeing quite a few quality bass being pulled out on jigs on this site, but no one ever tells me how theyre doing it . I wanna coax the big one of this pond i fish that i know has the elusive 4-5 lber.
The bass below is my biggest bass. a couple year old berkley scale was used from the rec center people. Came out 5.6, then 6.1, then 6.0 all different readings.
Which one looks bigger? The one I caught last night was longer, for sure, but just didn't have the stomach. I think it's time I just buckle down and get a scale. While we're on topic, any suggestions for an accurate enough scale under $30 or $40?
Congrats!!!!
That's the way the jig seems to work. You work your butt off trying to get that first one and then after that ........ BAM, BAM, BAM. Kind of like the Fishing Gods rewarding you for the time you have put in. And yes, jig fish tend to be better than average. Keep it up.
Also, when I first saw the pic I thought 6 lbs for whatever it's worth.
Wow thats a piggy. Nice catch I too have just recently started fishing jigs seems the little guys stay away from it only have caught 2lb's + Oh yea and man do you look happy thats all that counts this was my buddies biggest catch just got him fishing this year and he bagged this 2.5 lb but the look on his face tells it all. not his lazy eye LOL ;D He hates the pic cause of it.
Doc

Haha, it's worth something to me! It makes me want a scale even worse now though, knowing that it could have been a PB, or even close. You guys convinced me on getting a scale.
and Doc..
That place looks amazing to fish! I wish I had places like that. All I have is the d**n over fished Reservoir >
Brokejaw, I use the Rapala ProGuide-15lb digital scale, only because there isn't anything bigger than 10-15lbs around here. it runs about 30bucks.

Thank you sir, and I'm ordering a Rapala Scale asap!
My first best investment was a net a month ago, I haven't lost a fish sense except for when they get tangled in weeds and junk, no break offs at the dock!
Now my second best investment will be that scale, it's about time I get one.
Thanks guys for the kind words, I'm excited.
Your jig fish looks bigger then your PB and like LBH said, I also would say that fish is 6-6.5lbs.
This one was 7.1 for reference. Catching a 7.1lber in switzerland is like catching a 15lber. in California.
Haha, I bet it is! That's a beauty. I guess that's true though, as I said the scale was an old piece of junk that read 5 but easily could have been off as it was rusty and disgusting some 12 year old had it in his tackle box.
It sucks that I don't have a scale, now I just have to catch a 7 quickly and weigh it so that there's no debate about my PB!
Great fish young man. You always look so happy. I cannot wait until I get one that makes me look that happy. Keep up the good work and thanks for all your help as well. I will beat my little lake yet. LOL

Man, there's nothing that makes me happier then catching a nice bass on a new technique, especially one that I have tried on and off for a year, but just recently read up on and now right away I catch a nice fish. It's only once a month that I catch a fish over 5lbs so of course I get happy! ;D And no problem for the help, there's tons of guys who help me so much I couldn't even begin to thank everyone. That's what this site is for
Yes, this site definately helps improve fishing!

I'm dying to know too! what kinda retrieve worked for you?
Good job young grasshopper ;D I'm glad it paid off for ya. Seeing good jig fish makes me want to get home that much more. Can't wait til next spring!! Keep it up
ive never gotten into jigs.
