My skill with spinnerbaits turned around when I started tweeting them. I found out to use the gold Colorado/Indiana blades. Mann's classic spinnerbaits come with these two
blades. They come with the blue glimmer skirt too on there white spinnerbaits. I add a mister twister split 4" double tail grub as a trailer and a trailer hook too. One shot
of YUM Shad scent and your good to go. My first casts are reeled faster so the spinner bait is above the sight line where we can see it. Then I slow it down so it's below the sight line were the bass are out of our sight. I use a white spinner bait in clear to slightly stained water conditions. I use a hot chartreuse spinner bait in stained to muddy water conditions. The mister twister 4" split double tail grub actually looks alive
and real when it's swimming behind my spinner bait. The bass can't resist its action.
When there is no action above the sight line when I slow it down below the sight line is when I get action. Above the sight line you can see your spinner bait and the bass and they can see you. Do not wear bright color clothes. Below the sight line you can't see your spinner bait. If you can still see your spinner bait slow it down more till your spinner bait is fully out of sight.
There's nothing hard about using spinnerbaits but like any other lure the bass don't strike them all the time. But I try them all the time.

I love the flexibility of a spinnerbait for customization and imo it catches bigger fish
When I was younger I had no idea why fish would hit it and so I never used it properly nor used it much at all
Nowadays with a whole lotta age, some wisdom, and some understanding.. its definitely in my repetoir I wouldnt go out with one..

Not my favorite technique but useful at times. My frustration is watching the spinnerbait coming in from 30' feet away and nothing is following. Seems like most strikes occur within a couple of turns of the reel.

Glenn here helped me with how to use spinnerbaits and I'm glad I listened to him and never gave up throwing them. If I'm having success from shore you can too.

I threw a spinnerbait for the first time ever on Monday. Just a War Eagle 1/4oz in white/chartreuse from Walmart that I bought on a whim.
In first five casts from the bank on small pond, I landed two 1.5+ lb bass and a third spit the hook. Best 10 minutes of fishing ever (I started fishing in July). The next 45 minutes = nothing.
I've thrown the same spinner three more times since for at least 30 minutes each, but I've only caught one more fish and had one more spit the hook.

I'm starting really love this bait. I use cranks a lot but it's gets tiresome having to pick grass/moss off my hooks almost every cast. Talk about versatile a nice catfish slammed it the other day which really surprised me but I guess for flatheads they like to go for live bait.
One thing that I've noticed is that the majority of my bites are relatively close to shore (bank fishing). I've only gotten one solid hit casting straight out from the bank. Do you guys see similar patterns? Could just be lake specific.

Spring time Spinnerbait fishing is where it's at!
Pre spawn, spawn, and post spawn, I always have a white or white/chartuse spinnerbait ready to go.

I was never a fan of spinnerbaits. But there is a time & place. I caught a 9lb-2 during a feeding frenzy near the bank & surface of a pond in Georgia. A year later I caught a 9.25 slow rolling the bottom in 20 fow at lake baccarac. They are part of my arsenal today.

I wonder since it can be a color thing with crankbaits when one color only works at times there is another time when any color will work. I wonder if this can happen with spinnerbaits besides other lures too?
I was throwing a #3 mepps w/silver blade Brown bucktail. I was catching smaller bass one after another. Then the bite stopped. I put on another larger mepps in exactly the same color. I caught a larger bass. The larger fish are attracted to the action of the smaller fish but won't strike the smaller lure.
Another time I was throwing a joesfly in the 1/4oz bass size in black gnat and catching bass after bass in the late afternoon. As it became darker the bass bite slowed down. I put on another joesfly in the brighter firetiger apache and picked up a few more bass till it became dark.
These are a few tricks I picked up along the way. Even in an overcast cloudy day and a light rain joesfly in firetiger apache will again catch fish in the low light conditions. It's all about the chartreuse color in the low light conditions or when the bite stops to upsize our lure in the daylite when the bite stops. Or try a different color.
Rules? There are no rules, We need to think beyond the norm. Frustrated never, willing to change, adapt, regroup and attack yes.

Rules work most of the time.. when they dont, you try things here and there to see what is necessary.
Spinnerbaits in Spring and Fall seem to work well.. I skip spring since my preferred lures are in-play.
Threw a bunch of topwaters and swimbaits yesterday along the weeds.. my favs.
They didn't like it..
Finally threw out a few spinnerbaits in the same lanes.. they finally started bitin..
BTW I dunno if the Wally worlds near you have them on sale but the Bomber Bushwhacker Spinnerbaits are to be had on clearance for 50 cents a pop.. I bought half their inventory a month ago and went back today and they're still on clearance.
Probably a lifetimes needs in Spinnerbaits satisfied in one clearance sale..

Wally worlds you mean Walmart? Their selection for spinnerbaits is pretty limited where I'm at. I think they carry strike king and booyah I differnt sizes and colors and that's about it. I picked up a strike king spinner the other day and I'm disappointed in the quality of the skirt. Not very many strands just seems cheap to me.

My local Walmart carries War Eagle spinnerbaits. Before I bought one last week, I had heard good things about them. The chartreuse/white one I got has held up very well and brought in fish.

Thanks guys for the additional info. I've been fishing the bait with no trailer but gonna I'm have to try some single and twin tail grubs here soon.

I've only been using a trailer hook, and the fish I've caught have been hooked on it.
I might switch to a twin tail grub today and see what happens. Not sure if I can/should have both trailers.

Yes I mean walmart.. I guess each may have different inventory.
The Bomber spinnerbaits were on clearance for 50 cents each.. these arent those no-package $1 spinnerbaits which dont look too well put together that Walmart usually sells.. these are in package. I use them for base spinnerbaits and for parts and custom make my own.
I suggest customizing and learning to do it yourself. Since I did so, I've been able to put together some effective combos for my waters and I like them better than the spinnerbaits sold to the masses..and I can customize on the water if I feel I need to make an adjustment.
I looked at the KVD spinnerbaits at Walmart and for $5 my spinnerbaits beat them on looks an details.
You can play with differing layers of skirt color strands and make the skirt look relatively like native forage in your lake.
Customizing and catching fish off your own combos can really give you some real confidence in spinnerbaits.. for those who are still not convinced in the effectiveness of this 100+ year old lure..
Now that we are in Fall more than half my catches are off spinnerbaits

I'd be interested in making my own. I've got a design idea for them that I'm going to play around with. I'm going to play around with skirt colors also.I have a strong feeling grub trailers will be big.

I love a good spinnerbait bite. It's not often we get the "right" conditions for one on the lake I fish, but when it happens it's lights out. And there is seemingly never a time when Pike don't hit them, so when I am just looking to get yanked on by a big fish a 3/8's oz. spinnerbait over the top of the grass will draw some big bites from the toothies.

Spinner bait is the first lure use I when I go to my spot. I just started bass fishing a month ago, my first bass I caught was on this spinner bait, and now every time I go I use it and I always get a strike. It isn't even a fancy one I bought it for two bucks at Dick's sporting goods with their name on it, but made by Strike King in chartreuse and white with a chrome willow and chrome Colorado. I'm definitely gonna get a few more in different colors wIth some gold blades.
