Another 5lber....UPDATE! 2025

fishing user avatarRed reply :

I didn't get out much this weekend due to some Cub Scout activities. I only caught one small keeper Friday morning. Saturday morning I managed to catch four bass, two keepers and this one being the biggest. It went 5.6lbs on my scale. I was fishing a big point that seperates the marina area from the main lake. The shoreline is covered in chunk rock and the water drops quickly down to 12-18 feet. I was casting right up to the chunk rock and slow rolling the spinnerbait back to the boat. This one bit after about the third or fourth crank. all fish were caught on a spinnerbait except one on a jig. Three out of the last four weeks I have caught a 5lb plus bass. Probably dosen't sound like much to most of you but that is a good deal for me!

fishing user avatarshimmy reply :

Im glad your still catching fish my friend, but your scale is off. I don't know what it is about interesting weights of fish on this site. If people are feeling the inclination to give it an extra few pounds and put it in the 5 pound class and above and it doesn't even look close, wouldn't it be wise to just withhold the weight and just post the fish? It would erase all criticism. I know it shouldn't bother me, but i think to save the insanity, the scale police should always be on guard.

The bass in your avatar is a BEAUTY though red and she has some weight to her. Keep the fish coming

fishing user avatarOHIO reply :

Regardless of the weight, that's a great fish!

fishing user avatarRed reply :

My scale might be off.  It is Berkley digital scale and it reads 2lbs when I put a 2lb dumbell on it.  Oh well.  The one in my avatar is my PB, however I didn't even own a scale for that one, I have no clue what it weighed, I tell everyone 9lbs, it makes me feel cooler.  :D  I will be sure not to include anymore weights with my posts, so your not bothered.   ;D

fishing user avatarNine Miler reply :

Cliff, if you held them like this they'd look bigger.

>

I am blaming this on perspective. Good fish.

fishing user avatarRed reply :

i wish I could!  But having to take the picture of myself I have to hold them right next to my face!

fishing user avatarNine Miler reply :

I figured, I was kinda poking fun at shimmy.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Probably dying batteries.  A Chatillon spring scale never has such issues :)

Seriously though, the fish in your avatar is a 5ish fish.  The fish above is not.   Start taking length and girth measurements.  It takes a 19 to 20" fish to come close to five pounds.  Keep catching man!

No doubt about it Red, there is an art in holding the fish out so Nine Miler is right. I understand how you are alone so it makes it tough! One thing that does help with telling the weight of a 5 pound bass in any deceptive picture, look at the hand and the size of the mouth of the bass. Around 5 pounds, almost looks like the hand can go in the fishes mouth. If the hand dwarfs the mouth, than most likely either the person is huge or the fish aint 5. And like i stated before Red, i would take your Avatar bass any day, that thing is huge even that far away.

fishing user avatarOHIO reply :

I didn't notice the fish in your avatar. That thing is a pig.

It could eat some of fish I have been catching recently.

fishing user avatarRed reply :

The fish in my Avatar was about 24" long and like I said, no scale so I don't know the weight.  Here is a few others that were weighed on the same scale. This fish was 23" long and very skinny.  It weighed 5.7lbs on my scale.

57lber.jpg

This fish weighed 4.5lbs on my scale

This one 5lbs

This is the fish in my avatar next to my size 10 foot.

anyway from now on I will do the girth and lenght thing.  Thanks for the interest guys.

Cliff

P.S. The batteries are fairly new

fishing user avatarOHIO reply :

It doesn't really matter how much the fish weighed. If you had fun it was well worth the trip.

Catching a big fish is just a major plus.

I have yet to break the 5 pound mark, but I still go out as much as possible because it is fun.

fishing user avatarindymusky reply :

so whats happening is when you put the fish just past your head your shrinking the heck outa the fish. lol your making it look as small as possible. Those are some good fish but you just need to work on making them look bigger. youd look at your avatar and say ok looks like a good 5 then you look at it next to your foot and you think ok thats a 7 or bigger.

fishing user avatarRed reply :

Yeah but currently I do not have a camera.  When I get one I plan to set it up so I can use the timer and take a decent shot.  Its not a big deal, I know what I caught and how big they were.  That is all that really matters.

Thanks

Cliff

fishing user avatarRed reply :

Ok I caught this one this morning on a spinnerbait, same spot as the last one I caught.  My scale told it was 4.1lbs.  I took a good length and girth measrement and used the calculator here on BR.  The length was 21 1/2 inches and girth was 14 1/2...that comes out to be 6.57lbs.  I could put my fist in this fishes mouth fairly easily.  What do you think?

sbbass.jpg

Either way it was a ton of fun!!  She fought hard and got airborne a couple times, and once after I released her.

Thanks

Cliff

fishing user avatarOHIO reply :

That fish is easily bigger than the first one you posted, but I'm not sure it's 6.5lbs. It's kind of hard to tell by the way you hold it.

Either way a great fish.

I think your scale is much closer than the length/girth calculation.  Looks like a decent 4 to me.

fishing user avatarindymusky reply :

looks  like your on a roll

fishing user avatarRed reply :

Yeah, regardless of what these bass weigh, I have been catching at least one in this size range each trip now for the past month or so.  Pretty good for me considering I could barely break the dink mark all summer long.

fishing user avatarCoBass reply :

Regardless of weight, that is a very nice fish. Good job and keep the pics coming. Tight lines...CoBass

What do you think?

I think that the people who believe that they can tell the weight of a fish based upon a little picture posted on an internet forum don't really know what they're talking about.

If you're not asking what the weight was (like in the first pic) then what's the point of acting all self righteous and basically calling the OP a liar?  The "scale police" what a joke!

The problem with digital scales is that as the batteries lose juice they change.  If you still have the same batteries in it go get a 5 lb bag of sugar/flour and weigh that.  If your scale says 5 lbs then it's pretty accurate at that weight.  A digital scale may be accurate at 2 lbs and off at 5 lbs.

fishing user avatarMrWrinkle reply :

That definitely looks like a 4-pounder to me -- I'd say your scales are spot-on with that one. Nice fish!

On more than one occasion, my digital scales have shown some wild weights. A couple of months ago, they registered just over 5lbs on a fish. It was a nice fish but I was skeptical of that weight, and so rebooted the scales. Second time around it registered 3lbs, which is what I was expecting.

Great fish Red! You are on fire regardless of the weight. This fish is much bigger than your first which weighed over 5 on your scale and this weighed 4 on your scale. Get a new scale. Somethin weird is happenin.

And Tyrius buddy, sorry i hurt you feelings. But hate to remind you this is a fishing forum and people do weigh there fish on this site. So yes, i guess people do care about how big fish are. Check out any forum on the fishing trip and you'll see some one talking about the weight. Imagine that, a fishing site talking about the weight of fish.

Red, whatever you are drinkin, keep doin it cause you are providing entertainment for the rest of us who can't make it out fishing. Great job

Takes a lot to hurt my feelings and trust me this didn't do it.

I'm well aware that people weight their fish.  What strikes me as odd are those "scale police" who emphatically state that what the poster says that their scale showed is incorrect.  You can not accurately judge a fish's weight on the internet so what's the point of calling people out, of being the "scale police"?

fishing user avatarshimmy reply :

sometimes tyrius it is obvious. And i agree, some pictures are very difficult to tell the weight. Others are just ridiculous. Some people don't care about what the fish weighs while others do. That's what makes this site wonderful. This post is about Red, he is realizing he needs a new scale since he is consistently catching bigger fish now. Since he obviously cares about how much it weighs and weighs all of his bigger fish, just seems right to get a scale. Don't let this bother you more than it should.

fishing user avatarRed reply :

Thanks for all the input guys. Until I can afford to get a really good scale, I am just gonna forget about the weights.  I am headed out tomorrow morning again, gonna fish this same spot, if it is dead I will load boat and head to a different spot.  Hopefully though it is still holding some bass and hopefully they are biting!!!

Cliff

fishing user avatarRed reply :

Got out this morning for a bit before the wind got to be too much.  I caught four bass, all on a spinnerbait and all from the same rocks as the last couple weeks.  These were the two better fish of the bunch.
