Questions about SHIMANO Tranx Baitcast Reel
Q:
Is the 400A1 comes with a power handle?
Answer: Yes it comes with a power handle. I believe it also states that in the description. You will love this reel, the handle prevents hand strain and the reel is super smooth.
Answer: Yes. AHG designations comes with the power handle
Q:
Would double 9's be fine on the hg model or would it wear the gears out quick?
Answer: You won't affect the gearing with casting 9's or 10's day in and day out for years.
Q:
what size Tranx for shimano travela 6.6 MH?
Answer: Depends on what your fishing for, and lure weight. If your casting all day and your lure weight is under 4oz. I'd go with a 400 series. If casting half the time and lure weight is over 4oz. I'd go with the 500 series. I have both. Each have a use in my boat. Good luck!
Answer: Depending on what your fishing for, weight of lures, and line. The 400 series is a great reel for throwing medium to large baits all day. if your fishing bass i'd go with the 300 series.
Answer: Depends on what line you plan to use and what fish you are targeting....

Q:
May i order 400A but is come with power handle?
Answer: Wrong. The 401a does not come with a power handle. The 401HG does.
Answer: Yep
Q:
Does the 400 ahg come with the power handle as pictured in one of the reviews?
Answer: Yes the 400 high gear "AHG" comes with the power handle and the 400A comes with the double paddle handle
Answer: yes
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes
Q:
Would this reel (Shimano Tranx 400a) work well for lake and coast fishing?
Answer: Since they stopped producing the Curado 300 this is the best on the market for lake, river or coastal fishing. With its drag and spool capacity and ease of use it is a “REEL” big fish stopper! Two thumbs up for this one ????????
Q:
whats the lightest lure you can throw with the 300?
Answer: I have the 400 not 300 but I would think with 14 lb test line you could throw 1/4 to 1/2 oz crank baits, spinner baits etc and even Senko worms. I use my 400s for muskies and lighter weight Shimano, Abu reels for bass size lures.
Answer: Mostly depends on the rod. The reel will cast any weight. Unless you need that much line capacity, go with a smaller reel. The right rod, line and reel will make for easy casting.
Q:
When will the 401AHG be back in stock?
Q:
Is this the left handed model?
Answer: Yes the 401 is left handed
Answer: Yes, the 401 is left handed.
Answer: Yes
Q:
what would be a good 2 pice rod to go with this? mainly fish for salt water spicies
Q:
Does the 400 have carbon fiber drag?
Answer: It does have a carbon drag. The drag system on this reel is super smooth. Even after having a fish run several times, the drag response is the same, smooth.
Answer: Cross Carbon fiber washers, according to the Shimano Tranx descriptions
Q:
What size tranx for st croix 7'6" med-heavy, 30lb braid, inshore stripers? 401hg seems too heavy. 300 series is also heavy. maybe 200 is best? agree?
Answer: I use a loomis 9ft 6in with a 300 series tranx for King and pink salmon ranging from 10lbs to 30lbs. The low profile gives you a comfortable grip and the brut strength you need to land it. if your throwing 30lb braid a 200 will do but a 300 will give you that extra security. I have no regrets on my Tranx purchase Good Luck fishing them stripers.
Q:
How do you order the power handle on the 400A?
Answer: They have not released the power handle yet to purchase. The Abu Garcia power handles might match though.
Answer: Check E bay or call Shimano directly.
Answer: I called and shimano direct. They were backordered but will put you on the waitlist. Cost was about $40
Answer: Right now there only on tge hgs but shimano is going to change it up so u can have either
Q:
Does the 300A have a power handle
Answer: https://fishshop.shimano.com/pages/tranx-300-400

Answer: Yes best reel i ever bought
Q:
Best rod to pair up with the tranx 300 reel ?

Q:
How would this reel hold up to blackfishing on Long Island?
Answer: sorry. I gave this as a gift and so I dont have any experience with it.
Q:
Whats the drags pounds on tranx 300.
Answer: 22#s of drag. If you are using this for salt water fish, use Spectra 50# 0r 65# EIGHT STRAND line for backing. It wont bind down on itself. If you go 40# or lighter you will get birds nest. Be sure to wet your line with water before casting. It is written in stone.
Answer: Max. Drag is 22 lbs.
Q:
What’s the warranty on the 401AHG?
Q:
What does AHG stand for
Answer: 400A and 401A are the size and designation for left hand or right hand retrieve. IF stand for high gear. The retrieve gear ratio
Answer: It means High Gear. The Tranx 400AHG's Gear Ratio is 7.6:1, while the Tranx 400A is just 5.8:1. Hope this helps.
Q:
Is the 401 left hand retrive?
Answer: yes
Q:
Would this be consisered a fast reel ? Or. A slow rel ?
Answer: The 401A HG and 400A HG are both ( High Gear). They are the high speed versions of this reel the slower is the PG
Answer: With a gear ratio of 5.8:1 it is considered “slow”
Answer: The 400A has a 5.8 to 1 gear ratio Which is slower than the 401HG HG stands for high gear The A picks up 30 in of line versus 40 in with the HG per turn of the handle Both are quick but the 400 and 401A are slower retrieve than the 400 401HG
Answer: Faster
Q:
Which one is right handed
Answer: 200, 300, 400, 500 ("0" at the end) is right handed, 201, 301, 401, ("1" at the end of the model No) is lefthanded

Q:
Does this reel come with two handles?
Answer: These reels only ship with one handle

Q:
Is the 401AHG came with the power handle?

Answer: Yes, but the levelwind doesn’t move on casts like bigger conventional levelwind reels. It only moves on retrieves.
Answer: The Shimano Tranx reels are level winds. They also come in left hand and right hand handles
Answer: Yes
Q:
Can u use it in saltwater
Answer: It's all I use it in. It's designed for big fish and corrosion/water resistance using what they call 'coreprotect'
Answer: Yes. Great for throwing metal.
Q:

Q:
I’m looking for the perfect flounder/ striper real inshore saltwater and I would like to know how much braided 20lb line the 300 tranx can hold?
Answer: I would use a minimum, 50# -8 strand Spectra. Spectra has a tendency to bind down and creates birds nest when casting. I use 50# 0r 65# spectra with a top shot of20 ft mono and then 1/3 length fishing rod of 20# fluorocarbon.
Q:
Can a 400hg handle 100 pounds yellow tail tuna ?
Answer: Assuming you mean a yellowfin tuna, yes it is possible. 65-80# spectra with a good fluoro leader and you have a decent chance.
Answer: No, you definitely need a 2 speed reel, model 30
Q:
Is this for saltwater or not? I had ordered it and had to cancel because it said for freshwater after purchasing
Answer: I use for saltwater. From the shimano website:
Answer: I’m sure it would be fine for saltwater, I rinse mine off and have never had any problems.
Answer: Freshwater use

Hello, When will they have the 400A?
Q:

Answer: Sorry. I gave it as a requested gift and I have no idea about fishing equipment
Q:
Would this reel be ideal for a slow pitch jigging rod?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Use the Shimano Tranx 200 or Tranx 300. Load it up with six strain 50# Spectra and then a top shot of fluorocarbon half the length of your fishing rod. Hang on tight!
Answer: Yes I would use the 400 or 500 size depending on depth and/or species your fishing for.

Answer: All HG models come with Powerhandle, and the Standard models com with doublehandle
Q:
Does the 400 model have a clicker?
Answer: No bait clicker on this one. If you want that option look at the revo Toro or new Diawa lexa
Answer: It does not. I believe the shimano tekota and similar line counter reels do
Q:
Does it come with the power handle or paddle handle ?
Q:
What size would work for musky? Using st.croix premier musky rod 7'. Or what reel would you recommend under $250? Thanks in advance.
Answer: The Shimano Tranx in a 400 size is tough to beat for musky. You can get a high ratio for burning or get something a little lower gear ratio for power. Also if you want something smaller you can always go to the 300. Very solid reel, and well worth the money.
Answer: I use the 401aHG for musky I have both of mine on 8' 6" St Croix rods
Answer: 300 HG is perfect for musky...fits nice in palm and still has power handle...
Answer: I would pay get the tranx 400

Product reviews of SHIMANO Tranx Baitcast Reel
Amazon Customer : Tuna rockfish bass
Pretty bad ass rig
Frederico Especial : Tranx

Anthony M. : Fishing
This reel was exactly what I expected it to be, absolutely incredible!! One of my favorite Shimano reels for big baits and big fish!
Michael J. Jordan : First let me say that giving this reel a single ...
First let me say that giving this reel a single star, is NOT because of the quality of the reel, as it is a dream come true, but mine became a nightmare, as not even using but a few times since my purchase, i find that the worm gear gets hung up on the left side and piles the sting there for several turns before catching and cycling back and forth, only to repeat the same cycle over and over. It appears there is a flaw in the gear, having a flat spot that does not allow the proper back and forth action to take place.
I am looking to return the reel for a replacement, as this is a high ticket item, and as a Shimano product, it should perform flawlessly right out of the box and remain as such for many years.
I trust i will be contacted with instructions on how to make the return happen.
I still believe in Shimano..... just not in the performance of this reel.
Paulfairbank : Expected delivery date.
Delivered in the time specified good quality product, the item is a fishing reel obviously used to go fishing very happy all round with the product and service provided !
Scott S. Thompson : It’s good, but not great
I have been using this reel for about 3 months. I bought it since it is so highly recommended for big swimbaits.
Good: the reel seems like it is going to be bullet proof. It feels very smooth and drag is consistent.
Bad: the spool is too narrow compared to other 300 reels. It makes it too hard to control the cast on large baits. The braking adjustments are internal, this really is a pain when your are using a range of baits between 2oz and 6oz.
It’s not a bad reel, but I feel like it’s overrated and overpriced. I will try out some other 300s before I purchase another Tranx
Phat Sanethavong : Butter smooth!!!
Used a couple of time now, really smooth. Will see how well it’ll last.
STEVEN P : Nice reel.
Excellent reel for both salt and fresh water apps.
Jay Griffiths : Click "add to cart"
This reel is magic (400a hg w power handle)
I would recommend this product to any musky hunter who is sick of messing around with garbage equipment, you get what you pay for.

Martin : Definitely would reccomend!
Smooth Long Casts and Super Quick retrieve. I'm using for Blue Cats and Flatheads....No Problem
Jim Sanders : Shimano Magic
Great reel, smooth and great quality. I have owned other MFGs but Shimano reels never disappoint.
kenjisaykosy : Wrong handle
I would give it 5 but the picture wasn't what was sent. The handle was different from the picture I selected to purchase. I had to buy the handle I wanted from the beginning.
Kindle Customer : Be careful about the handle
These are great reels, everything you've read about them is true except: Sometimes the 400s don't come with the pictured power handle and you'll have to spend another $40 to buy one. 200s and 300s don't come with the power handle, 400s do about half the time, 500s always do. Ask before you click checkout. I love the reel after swapping the handle.
john miller : My favorite baitcaster
Caught a 29lbs bluefin tuna on the 400hg and I've seen a guy land a 90lbs on the 500 model. Definitely plan on buying a 500Tranx for fishing big bluefin with poppers here in San Diego, Ca
chad duell : Holds a lot of line and feels great
I love the reel
SteveC : Love it!
Fast ship! Love it!
kip : solid

Earl Rakestraw : Great reel
Great reel which I use here on the west coast for yellow tail and White Sea bass.
James S Buhr : Love it!
It has super smooth casting and retrieve, love the feel and performance. I plan on catching many delicious fishes. ;)
Just Dave : Great for casting and want to buy the 500
Everything is perfect. Very easy to cast. The 400 is a little light for tuna but, that was my mistake.
Christopher W. Koffend : Great Reel - extremely smooth
Initially, I had purchased the 400 AHG (higher speed) and a similarly sized Daiwa LX reel to see which I preferred for adding more of this size reel (for musky fishing primarily). The decision was easy! The Daiwa failed right out of the box - the thumb button/clutch constantly failed to work properly (engage) upon casting out and starting the retrieve. Fortunately, I was in a boat with a fishing guide in N. Wi. who also owned a fishing shop. He said flat out, return the Daiwa, they are known to have such problems. He sells Daiwa's and we fished a few Daiwa's that day. Even the one's we used had some problems with clutch engagement (sometimes engaging in mid cast).
The Shimano Tranx has never once encountered this problem, has continued to perform very well throughout this season. The Shimano Tranx is simply a smooth operating, and so far, very reliable reel.
I have seen the Shimano Tranx encounter a single episode of inexplicable drag change (literally down to no drag), but I am not sure if this is the result of an action I took that resulted in this. Since it's happened only once, has not repeated it, I tend to believe it is something I did.
What I don't really like about the Shimano Tranx is their spool tension system (centrifugal). It works, I just don't like that I have to open up the side plate (w/ quick release) and try to manipulate the little/tiny plastic pieces (without pulling them too far out - and potentially off) and hopefully not lose them. The end result is that I find that fine tuning adjustments that I would normally make on a casting reel, I simply don't feel comfortable making (on the water) with these reels. As a result, I find that too often, I am not fishing the reel ideally adjusted to the lure I am throwing - or more likely - to the person who is currently using the reel.
Overall, I can highly recommend these reels. I have 3 of them, the 401H, the 401 AHG (higher speed) and the 301 AHG (higher speed). At least I think I have the correct numbers indicated. All of my casting reels are left hand retrieve. Everybody who used them is right handed. Personally, I just don't understand the concept that we are supposed to buy reels that force us to change hands either in mid cast or upon cast completion. It's been funny watching people use my reels who have always bought the right hand retrieve reels. In most cases, they initially respond by saying that they are not sure if they are going to be able to cast/use them as well. In every single case, those who claimed to prefer and only use right hand retrieve reels, after using the left hand retrieve reels for a day, say that they prefer them and in the end found them much more natural and easier to use (not having to change hands after/during casting) and using a retrieve that they (most people) grew up with. Cast right handed, retrieve left handed (ie. spinning reel style).
I have also found that bringing in a larger fish is easier - controlling the rod with my stronger right arm while reeling with my left. I don't get the rod twist (as I do catching sharks with right hand retrieve reels), as I am controlling the rod with my predominant hand/harm/strength.
I run the Tranx 300 and 400 reels with 20 pound mono backing and 80 pound braid to a flouro leader (for musky fishing).
FYI - I don't hate Daiwa, I use their SGB 27 & 47 line counter reels for trolling.
Lucas Koziol : It came broken
Brand new reel, drag does not tighten. You can tighten the star drag all the way but the reel is still basically in free spool.
Seller refused refund based only on fact that 30 day window had already passed. I've noticed that other people have written product reviews with very complaints. Seller has a history of sending defective products.
andy : Great
Great reel thanks

Great reel thanks
Lynne : Good investment
Best reel out there!! Worth every penny!
SteveC : Love it!
Fast ship! Love it!
jay : Five Stars
Love ❤️ it
Another Review : I have nothing new to add to all of the great reviews already shared about this reel series.
My light setup surface iron reel. I like it better than the Lexa HD (I own 2 Lexa's), and wasn't willing to spend that much more for the new TW.
Amazon Customer : 400 ahg
Got an 400 ahg for throwing bucktails u can burmn them like nothing definitely gonna start switching over to these

Sam Southall : Awesome reel
Awesome reel fast shipping I bought this reel for my girlfriend so she can musky fish with me. Threw big rubber all day for days on St Clair with it No issues at all smooth drag comfortable to use Cant go wrong with these reels. This makes the 3rd one I've purchased
Omar : Great reel
Way better than i expected! I have the tranx 401a its paired with a 12ft okuma surf rod and 40 lb kastking braided line. Im mainly using it for leapord shark and batray fishing in the bay area. Ive had for a few weeks now and no complaints, really easy to dial in and i havent had a bad backlash yet. I wouldnt think twice about buying this reel its worth it.
Johnny : The Tranx is a beast
My all time favorite reel. The power handle lets me crank out monsters and the sleek design is gorgeous and functional.
jae lee. returned this item : Why not it's power handle.
There is no power handle. Why is advertising different from product? And it's an open box
Drake Vallies : Good reel poor salesmanship
I ordered and paid for the 400hg and after doing research and understanding the product line better i received the 400 low gear paddle handle.. but it came in the hg box... very misleading and poor salesmanship.
Shimano tranx are great reels but either fund me back the difference or make it right.
Amazon Customer : Great reel but gears stripped after two years.
Smooth and strong but gears stripped after 2 years of light saltwater use. I’ve use Shimano for years and never had any problems. Hopefully it just a bad apple in the bunch. Will send unit to Shimano for repairs.
