Answer: It's ot bad with braid as long as every once in a while uyou take a very long cast and put a little tension on the line when you reel it in.

Answer: Yes, just be aware if you're flipping and pitching it's gonna put a lot of force on the reel.

Can this reel handle 30lb braid-line with maybe 20lb leader in surf fishing scenario?

Answer: I wouldn't surf fish with this reel it is an average size bass fishing reel. I don't know what size fish you are going after I have a 20# braid on my reel with perhaps 100 yards on it (full to the max). I like open face Penn reels or larger bait-casting reels (antique "Ocean City" are excellent casting reels). better for surf casting, easier to keep clean. I do see lots of people fishing with rather light tackle though.

Hated it got this for my husband, the 3rd time used the drag let go while trying to set the hook on a bass, and could not be adjusted, sent it back and had a replacement sent. When it arrived the handle was bent badly and the drag system could not be adjusted. What ever happened to quality control. We will never order a Lews product again or recommend it.

Right out of the box I was impressed with it's size and weight,
i only made a few casts with it after I put on some line which wound very nicely on the spool,
The reel is very smooth casts a mile, and is 100% anti reverse,
already going to buy another one for my son and start weeding out my old junk !
worth every penny as of now would recommend.
8-15-15 Update,
I have used this reel a few times and caught some real nice Bass too! I really Love the reel ! BUT! .... Today on it's 4th trip out I was reeling in a 1/4 oz. Spinner Bait and the KNOB feel off! I was so Disappointed that this happen to a reel i was really lovin'
Amazon is quickly shipping out another one (thank you Amazon) I hope the next one does not start to fall apart after a few uses, (I know Sh*t happens and it may be no fault of Lew's), other wise I will have to change my opinion on the Lew's American Hero Reel!

I own many baitcast reels, combos, rods etc. This reel is not my favorite. It doesn't handle braided line well at all (yes it has a mono leader to start). It doesn't cast very well even with mono, comparatively with other reels in this price range.

I would recommend a Pflueger or Abu if you're in this price range. Or even a Quantum.

Obviously if you double the price tou can score a nice Lews or something even better.

Just received the lews american hero reel today. Within the first 2 seconds of holding this reel, I knew something was off. First thing I did was spin the handle and engage the clutch, and boy was it bad. First off there was an instant grinding sound and not smooth at all, second the spool wouldn't spin, and third the clutch wont disengage, so I have a free spinning spool. So far I am very disappointed In This reel l, especially since it's a lews, and my first one at that. I immediately requested a replacement. Now I know this could just be a bad reel off the line, so I will retract my review, contingent upon the replacement being up to par. Also I dont know if it's on Amazon or lews, but warranty card was not present in package.

Dont buy, reel lasted 21 days before it failed I've gone fishing 5 times total and today the 5th time the line guide failedand is stuck on one side saw my reel thought i had a backlash pulled it all out started reeling in and it was the reel guide not moving bunching all the line on one side
