Questions about Daiwa Minicast MC40, 4.1: Gear Ratio, BU Bearings, 16.10" Retrieve Rate, Right Hand,Silver
Q:
How do you thread the reel?
Answer: Sheryl, to thread the spool just unscrew the cover (large round cover over the spool) and tie on your line. FYI I got this reel/rod combo a few years ago and it was terrible (sent it back and the manufacture and they replaced it with a spinning reel/rod combination). Go with the mini spinning combo! steve
Q:
Will a slip bobber knot go into the reel ?
Answer: The cap will not allow much to be reeled inside, so you should be okay.....split shot may fit in....
Q:
How do you set the drag? We're having trouble getting it to reel in with larger fish.
Q:
How does this reel handle 2 pound line?
Answer: 2lb. line all I use on my Diawa and I wouldnt use anything else for trout fishing. I'm still using my original Diawa minicast I bout when I was 14 years old. I just bought this new one to have a back up. Great reel!
Answer: wonderful reel for small game fish (trout). Great fun with 2# test. you will love it.
Answer: I have only used 4lb test
Q:
Will this hold and throw 5 lb braid ?
Answer: It should. Five pound braid is super slim, and the reel was sold with 6 pound mono, which is considerably thicker....
Answer: Yes, but it is not designed To use 5lb braided line.
Answer: I would think so. Seems to work just fine for all the different lines I have put on. Braid and mono
Q:
anyone have a recommendation for a quality micro cast for trout and pan fish 4 lb line thanks
Answer: I have the micro zebco gold and the minicar diawa. In build quality (and in general) the diawa wins hands down. It's not perfect casting, I get a snag in the reel that sticks here and there but I've been impressed. The only other worthy player is the pflueger trion...which I got the size 6 of and thats a solid reel as well. Don't buy zebco
Answer: The Daiwa Minicast Spincast Reel is a great well-built reel for ultra-light fishing.
Answer: A LIGHT WEIGHT SPINNING ROD AND THE DAIWA MINICAST IS PERFECT.
Q:
My dad has an original one of these that came in a hard travel case with a 5 pc rod i believe. Does anyone know if u can still get the rod for it?
Answer: If it’s the “Spincast” model “MC59”
Answer: Check with Bass Pro Shops.
Q:
Recommend rod?
Answer: The rod is okay considering it separates into 4 equal lengths and stores in a mini case. I’ve only used it for trout and it’s done fine handling 1 to 2lb rainbows.
Answer: A Ultralight or light rod not over 6ft my favorite is 5ft to 5.5ft rods and go with a solid fiber glass rod like a ugly stick you want Regret it
Answer: Limited selection...….any baitcaster, 4 to 5 feet long....

Jacob : Dishing
I absolutely love this reel I suggest everyone try fishing for bigger game with smaller rod and reel it's a hell of a time
RKSpinelli : Five Stars
Nice little reel .Casts very nice .
Fippingers : Drag is very finicky
Reel works fine except for the drag. The drag is an incredibly narrow window of adjustment from nearly no drag to locked down. Caused several line breaks and lost fish.
ElPrimero : Daiwa Disappointment
In 2011, I got two of these minicast's for my boys. The first summer they worked great. With 6 pound line they would cast light bait and trout lures super far. I thought I had typical Daiwa quality going for me, and my boys loved the reel setup on their 42 inch California lite rods. Then the next season the minicast's both started acting up. They would not spool line off smoothly in a cast but would snag after a few yards, and that happened with fresh limp line installed too. This season, the problem just got worse for both minicast's making them practically unusable to cast. The boys got totally frustrated with them and moved on to open spinning reels which they've still not mastered. I've diagnosed the problem with the minicast's. The bail is made of very soft metal, so soft that when the line retrieval pickup pin engages, the line rubs on the back edge of the bail as it wraps around the spool actually wears a deep divot into the back edge of the bail at the spot where the pickup pin is at. So when it's cast, the line coming off the spool hits that rough divot in the back of the bail and gets snagged up. What I will try to do to fix this is to carefully file, sand and polish out that divot on the back edge of the bail. I think if I can return it to a smooth edge all the way 'round the bail, then the casting will improve if the line can come smoothly off the spool and over the bail. Even if that works, it'll be a temporary fix, because in just one season, that divot will surely re-appear as the line wears further into the soft metal bail once again. So much for Daiwa quality of years back. Otherwise, they are well built reels, but they obviously skimped on some internal parts materials. I'd look for another micro reel, maybe even a small Zebco.

Kevin Cotten : Good reel
Lightweight. Very small though.

Roger : Great reel
This is not necessarily for beginners but I plan to put on my pole for bluegill fishing. My good old minicast gave out after 60 years so these things can last if you take good care of them. It's light weight and if you put 6 lb strength on it. It's great.
T M MOORE : nothing but a headache!
I have a daiwa mincast2 reel that a friend gave me, I cleaned it up and I love it. works great! I love the mini outfits. it puts a real challenge to catch the smaller farm pond fish. so I ordered this one. BUT! this is the biggest piece of junk I have ever seen!!!! MADE IN CHINA of course. it has hung up constantly even out of the box. so now it has been retired to my junk box to get parts off of if needed. stay away from this !!!! buy a zebco 202 rod and reel outfit. they are probably made in china too, but at least the one I bought is working so far is working fine so far!
Jeffrey C. Riley : Five Stars
Perfection, made me smile
Rodney Thompson : Great backpacking reel
Been using these for years for backpack fishing but wore the last one out.
Whiteraven : Bait cast, spincast, or spinning reel choices.
After reading the reviews that others have submitted. The main complaint is that pickup pins and the corresponding area of the rotor spool become notched from line ware after a time. Sorry folks, but this happens with "all" spincast reels. Why, because of the design. If you use this reel for floating bait and not trolling a spinner. You will not have the problem for many years.
If you want to drag spinners and artifical bugs, use a spinning reel.
How do I know these things you may ask. I'll tell you. I am an old Curmudgeon and been fishing for over 60 years. And in that time I have had hundreds of rods & reels. Plus I am still a repairman for both.
So remember, spincast reels are not really the best choice for constant casting and retrieving lures.
Bobby : Great little reel
Great reel for a smaller rod. I bought one for my nephew to use, easier for his small hands. I also have one for a small rod for hiking into back ponds and such. when paired with a decent rod, you wont be disappointed. I have found that the drag is kind of a let down. its almost like its on or off, very sensitive, but you get used to it, its a great reel for what it is, and I have enjoyed mine. Daiwa makes the best spin cast reels.
Ashley Cheramie : Would not recommened
Bought this for my husband an avid fisherman, broke within the 1st week. He loved the size of it but just not durable.
Amazon Customer : Great microreel
This is a great micro reel. Very solid construction like bigger expensive baitcasting reels
Emily Alexander : Garbage, purchased two at the same time
Garbage, purchased two at the same time. They don't cast very well. Went fishing today with them and when I returned home , I took them off the rods and tossed them in the garbage
Gary : Four Stars
