Product reviews of Daiwa Goldcast Spincast Reel, GC120
massimo : Four Stars
Certo gud
T3GunWorks : Great reel, better drag than the Abu Garcia Abumatic ...
Great reel, better drag than the Abu Garcia Abumatic 170's. Still a little light for big redfish, or a trashcan lid flounder. But will do the trick if you work it. I suggest respooling with better line right out of the box.
steve : strengh
I have had a pair that I bought far less than the currant price. paired them with a 6 ft'heavy duty Ugly Stick, probably pulled in a few thouzand pounds of fish each and they were still working flawlessly untill yesterday when one went overboard.between the reel and ugly stick, about 125.00 to replace. does not matter. bought these in 2004. i have 4 types and styles of daiwa from downrigging trolling salt water(purchased in 1976). all working great with allittle care. cleaning once in awhile. thank goodness that the gs120 is still being made. the overboard was still working great so im here to grab another one to install on my spare ugly stick.
John Dunn : The Closed Faced Standard
Not really sure where the bad reviews come from. I’ve used these reels for years, if you prefer closed face reels and target the size fish they are built for the Goldcast series sets the standard. I currently have three and they have always worked flawlessly for me. Pair them up with a matching Daiwa Aird X casting rod and I consistently outfish my spinning reel buddies with them. In most cases I refuse to use anything else for freshwater fishing.
D. Quanstrom : It took down a 46" Musky..
I've got three of these and two Silvers. I fish in the Northwoods of WI & MN. I have the reels loaded with as little as 4lb and as high as 8lb.
Keep them clean, keep them oiled, and change line every so often. The largest I've caught was a 46", 22lb Tiger Musky. 8lb test, No leader, and 1 hr of of play and a lot of drag. But now, he rests on my wall, next to the mounted reel that caught him.
Paul Holland : Cast well
Smooth operation
JJ : Five Stars
best reel ever. i have several and keep buying them
mountainman : Item was damaged prior to shipping ... but was shipped to me anyway. NOT HAPPY AT ALL.
The Daiwa Goldcast III SpinCast Reel looks like it has been dropped or struck with some object before it was boxed and shipped. For the price of this reel I expect it to be NEW ... not all scuffed up. I am NOT satisfied with this product in this condition.
Please send me a replacement immediately as I have an Alaskan Salmon fishing trip I leave on in 10 days and I bought the reel to take on this trip. I sent a picture of the damage on the reel to the Customer Service folks but have not heard from them.
I know I can return it ... but I do not have time to get a replacement before I leave on my Alaska trip ... not very Happy :-(
Don : great real
I have been using this real for several years now. I only use Daiwa reals. In my opinion they are the best reals on the market. I bought these 2 reals just incase I should ever need another real. I presently have this real on both my rods but I was told that Diawa was going out of business so I wanted to have 2 reals put back in case I need one at a later time.I use my reals a lot as I am retired and do a lot of fishing. My reals are used hard but Diawa reals take it and never give me any problems.
frank : gc-80
Had this reel for 22 years now and still have the rod that came with it powerful enough for 8lb. Large mouth bass and had no problems love it.!!
Yorkie Owner : Worked Great... at first
As my headline says, this Daiwa GC120 worked nicely at first. And then it got to where it would jam up, where the handle would not crank. The only way to free it is to turn off the anti-reverse, spin the reel backwards a revolution or so, and then the reel works fine for around 10 revolutions, then locks up again. Not an impressive reel, and that is being as generous as I can be...
Amazon Customer : Love this reel
This is the 4th identical reel I've owned over the last 15+ years. A lot of use out of each one til just wore out and one that went over the side of the boat with pole and all. Love this reel! Hope they never discontinue this model, this is my one and only go to.
Frank Uecker : Rinse out the salt.
Best bang for the buck. I have six of them.
Rinse them out, and lubricate them ever so often, and they will last for years. I can outcast five hundred dollar reels with this reel, and have landed 28 inch redfish. No problem. Great little reel.
Amazon Customer : Five Stars
Kids love their reels.

WallStreetsInsane : Built like a tank
Heavy built like a tank
Large aperature is a great idea.
Casts as far as a spincast possibly can.
The spool oscillates reducing line digs.
Works reasonably well with select low # braid.
Carrying spincast on a setup used to make me feel like a juvenille.. now I feel confident on my trouble-free spincaster.
Tips:
Best to cast with the handle in oscillation position where maximum exposure of the spool occurs for a longer cast.
Dremel polish all areas where line contacts unit.. aperature eyelet etc.
Models:
GC120 is pretty large sits high off the rod and requires a large hand to comfortably depress the thumb button..probably not for the ladies but if your hand can handle it, the largest model has the largest spool capacity.
GC80 is the smallest model and in my opinion is only marginally lighter and only a tad smaller than GC100 and only good for short-distance casting.. its spool is lax on capacity.
I'd go with the GC100 for a more versatile setup if GC120 is too large for comfort..
Fabrizio : Prestante e resistente
Prodotto di raro impiego nello stato Italiano. Forte e di semplice funzionamento.
Stephen L. Noe : Daiwa makes great reels
After years of using it I can say the reel is great. It just works and works and works. I have both the Gold and Silvercast and there is not a better spincast on the market. I believe the Goldcast is still made in Japan. The Silvercast are not made there anymore. The drag on the diawa reels is what makes them superior. Smooth drag which holds it's setting guarantees you won't lose a fish unless you are cut off or have a bad knot. I use Stren super knot on my reels and it just plain works in salt and fresh.
Keep it up Daiwa!
Art : Check size before ordering
Great reel but this one is a bit large and heavy for me. I should have bought one of the lighter models.
The Walrus : Very Disappointed
Very very disappointed with the lack of quality in this reel I purchased for my 8 yr old's birthday. The first time we fished, he hung it on a lily pad, and the reel's drag froze and the button would not push or release. It almost tore the rod out of his hands. I took it and also could not make the line release. It also has an irritating clicker that cannot be turned off.
I have fished many Diawa products over the years and was always pleased, but this reel is junk and I will return it and order an Abu 170. I have one of those now that the kids are fishing which I received as a gift in 1970! I hope the quality remains strong.
JStreet : Excellent Reel
Have another Daiwa Spincast Reel that has always workded great and still working great. Do I purchased another one.
Bed Rock : The worst item that I have ever purchased
Nothing about this reel works as it should have. Never given a review like this before. Hopefully this was a one of a kind event for Daiwa but like they say," you only get one time to make a good first impression." And they failed miserably.
Nick Brown : Broken on arrival and apparently not returnable?
Arrived with drag broken. Says it is not returnable.
Amazon Customer : Love this reel

Great reel but this one is a bit large and heavy for me. I should have bought one of the lighter models.
Stan M. : Not the Daiwa of the past
I wanted lighter line than the 20lb test that came on this reel, so I took it to a local store and watched them take the line off and put in lighter line. Somehow the inside of the reel shredded the new line as it was put on. Since I watched it myself, I am sure it was done properly. The guy at the store thought possibly it was bad line so we tried a second time, different brand, same out outcome. Such a shame; my last Diawa was a great reel.
Ovide Perreault : Easy to Use
My wife now has two of these, and loves their easy tangle-proof use.
Mary A. Odell : Good Reel, unless you get a defective one.
These are excellent reels, I have used many of these over the years. However, I ordered 3 of these reels during the last year and two of them were defective. The two that were defective, both had the same defect - the drag wheel was frozen and unmovable, making the reel inoperable. Both times Amazon sent a replacement that worked fine. But, there seems to be a lack of quality control, that Daiwa used to be famous for. I suspect this is a result of Daiwa having outsourced the production of these reels to Thailand. When they were made in Japan, this never happened.
I would have given this reel 5 stars if I hadn't received defective ones. If you buy one of these reels be sure to check the drag wheel as soon as you get it, to make sure it works, if not, return it for one that works. The reel works very well when it is assembled properly.
